We tried to return a duplicate Canon copier which was purchased for a gift. I purchased the copier a few weeks before the birthday and could not return it within the fourteen days. When I received the copier by UPS it was damaged due to water and had to be replaced. When I was given the replacement I mentioned it was for a gift and was never told that it had to be returned within 14 days.

I read the entire front of the sales slip for a return policy, however, I never noticed the small print on the back. I have damage to my eye sight from Multiple Sclerosis and cannot see fine print. Even if I could have read the fine print, I think it's very unfair about the return policy that is for a gift.

I now have a printer that I cannot use and still need to replace the birthday gift. We had also planned on purchasing a new computor when we entered the store but after the way we were treated I will never purchase another item from Circuit City. I will also be writing to the local newspapers Action Express.

#5 UPDATE EX-employee responds

Return Policy

AUTHOR: Daedulus - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Monday, June 04, 2007

Although it's unfortunate that you were not treated respectfully by management, my experience as an ex-manager tends to be that the disrespect starts with the customer.

Concerning your return, Circuit City, like most retailers, do not have an exceptions to their rule. "I couldn't read the print" although unfortunate, is not a grounds for being granted an exception. A limitation on your part means that it is incumbent on you to have someone read it for you or find another solution. You could also have asked the salesperson to explain all the terms and conditions. You cannot ASSUME that there is a 30-day return policy.

When a transaction takes place, there is no assumption of warranty unless the company specifies one.

Circuit city also cannot make exception for birthdays and gifts. We could never hold our ground in a return-situation if every customer knew the the company would return the item way past the return period if it was "for a gift".

Circuit City has NO WAY of knowing what has happened to that camera outside of the controlled environment of a store, therefore we cannot accept it as a return (which would put it back on our shelves) without knowing the condition.

If you've had it past 14 days, unless you call before hand and tell a manager at your local store of your extenuating circumstances (personal illness), the store is not obligated to return your item.

so you are sayin that it is disrespectful b/c the store will not accept your return b/c you are beyond the return period? if stores did not have return periods then people could just return items whenever they wanted to. you claim that no one told you that u only had 14 days to return the item and that the print on the receipt is you too small for you to read. to me that just sounds like bad excuses. and now you are saying that you srr no longer shopping at that store again and writin a letter to a newspaper ust because you do not agree with the return policy that applies to all customers.
