I pay bills electronically from my bank using ACH transfers. Recently I scheduled a payment on 1/9 to go out on the next day 1/10 to Citibank. So the credit card company has the payment in hand that day yet the payment isn't posted to my account until 1/13 (Tuesday). The payment was declared late since it was due on 1/12. After 2 emails with customer service they would NOT waive the $39 late fee plus interest for the month (I normally pay in full).

It seems to be an unfair business practice if the declared due date is really 3-5 days earlier than the declared due date. It is geared toward stiffing the consumer with a charge because they sit on posting the payment to the account.

I did check the online version of the card member agreement and it only refers to the due date, noting about paying earlier.

You don't feel sorry for them?

AUTHOR: Robert - (U.S.A.)

They just cancelled their purchase of a $47 Million luxury jet! Now the high brass has to find some OTHER way to spend the bailout money they received.

They are forced to tighten their belts and jet about in their OLDER luxury jets!

They MUST be compensated for the hardship they are going through! Oh, that's right-they WILL BE be because the democratic controlled congress and new president want to give them MORE in upcoming months!!!

You, me, and everyone else who work and pay taxes can just go to hell.

Processing Time..

AUTHOR: Robert - (U.S.A.)

ACH is NOT instant. You secheduled a payment to go out on 1/10, ACH transactions do not get processed on weekends. So it would have gone out the next business day, which would have been (1/12)Monday. Since it went out on Monday Citi bank may receive it on 1/12 but it would most likey be after their cut-off time so it would have been processed on 1/13(Tuesday). In this case it appeared to be an ACH transaction, but there are some companies your bank will send out a paper check, even though you did it on-line. This will add an additional amount of time for the company to get the payment.

Now, it may not be entirely your fault for not understanding this. Your bank's web site should have given you an error or at least a message that stated it would go out on the next business day(Monday) if you tried to put in a weekend. Now, if it did and you didn't pay attention, or if they didn't give one at all is something you will have to test with your bank.

This is one reason I will never use my banks Bill Pay option as if something goes wrong it is no better than sticking a check in the mail. A better option is to go directly to the credit card's own web site and use their on-line payment option. Here you can set an exact day. I have had payments posted on weekends with my CC's, which an ACH from your bank can't be done. Here you have proof from THEIR web site that a payment was made. It cut's down on the finger pointing if something goes wrong.

As to the late fees, E-mails are worth as much as the stamp it cost to send them. You need to call them directly. When you talk to them be professional, that is don't resort to name calling or yelling at the CSR who is really just restating policy(that you obviously don't agree with). Do not expect them to waive the interest, so you may not even want to bring that up. But if you have had a decent history with them they may just go ahead and waive the late fee.

It was the weekend.

AUTHOR: Nikki - (U.S.A.)

You scheduled a payment on Friday, 1/9 to go out the next day, which would be Monday, 1/12. It went out on the 12th, and your payment was credited on the 13th. You can't expect your bank to send it out on Saturday the 10th. Just because your actual bank may be open on Saturday does not mean the bill payer department is open on Saturday.

You need to find out from your bank what time they send out the payments and you need to ask the credit card company how long it takes for them to receive the funds. The credit card company may "pull" payments to post only 1 time per day. If your payment on the 12th wasn't received by them by a certain time, it would have rolled over to the next day's receipts.
