Fast-forward to a few months ago. My wife took a detour when retrieving her free credit report from annualcreditreport and signed up for a credit monitoring trial with ConsumerInfo. (CIC). I told her these guys are crooks and to cancel the trial immediately.
She canceled and we were charged. We raised hell and got our money back.
I was so mad that I created a web page: "Credit Monitoring is a Rip Off!" (inspired in part by the many tales on this site).
The moral of the story: Raise hell. Even if it's only $10, don't let them keep it. They don't deserve it.
