The sales rep from Continental Siding gave a great presentation including lots of pictures as well as a sample of a deck. He made promises in regards to construction and quality materials. He promised that each piece of wood would be"hand" selected. He also said it would take approximately one week to install the new deck. What actually happened was that a crew of two men spent less than
1.5 days tearing down the old deck and building the new one. The finished deck bore no resemblance to what was promised. The construction was not the same as the sample deck. The lumber quality was not as promised, either. The deck boards were full of voids and rotted knots. These knots had very sharp edges which made it dangerous to walk on the deck without shoes. Gaps between the boards were uneven, resulting in many large gaps, which caused a tripping hazard.
After many angry complaints and phone calls, they finally replaced the worst of the boards and fixed the worst gaps. The deck is ok, but not what was shown in the sample and should have been done right the first time.
This deck was purchased through Home Depot, Continental contracts with Home Depot for the installation of the deck. The crew who initially installed the deck was laughing about getting the lumber from Lowe's.
If you are considering building or replacing a deck, hire a REAL contractor.
