CyberDefender SCAM

I purchased PC tools antivirus program and somehow soon after installing this my computer stopped working. I soon noticed there was this program "CyberDefender" showing up claiming to assist repair the problem. I thought it was part of the PC Tools service. As I was unable to use my computer I contacted them by phone. I spoke to this smooth talking person in New Delhi,  INDIA, called Rohit. He then asked me to allow him remote access to my computer by which he could detect the fault. Soon he claimed I was hit by a virus and all the Windows startup files were corrupt. He said as the scan service did not include debugging this problem I would need a Microsoft trained technician and that for $249 I could buy the program and he would connect me to a technician in DELL or Microsoft. I foolishly agreed and I was connected to this technician and soon I had this other smooth talking Indian, called Upinder Singh who then proceeded to cleanup all the registry that the previous guy showed me and soon my computer was working.

I soon realized I was scammed, but with little choice, as I was working on a project with a dead line, I had to get my computer working. Unfortunately I lost the entire project as I was unable to save it. I had to spend several hours reworking the project.

Please do not download this program or contact these people as I believe once they have control of your computer there is little ordinary people like you and I can do. Also please report them to the Attorney General of California who can start investigating them. Also go to Ripoff Report and file a report.

Rightwing henchmen respond for Staples

AUTHOR: stopripoff - ()

It is surprising when one raises the issue of low paid workers, tip employees or minimum wage workers there is this deluge of response from the RIGHTWING.

My predictions were almost prophetic recall 1. Occupy Wall Street 2. Fast food workers on strike across the country. 3. Recent Wal Mart strikes in CA.

But America is too stupid to realize they vote in more of do-nothing politicians, pay them handsomely, so they & their corporate buddies can screw U with impunity.

  1. self service check-outs,
  2. on-line purchase with free store pick-up,
  3. additional free items if same item is purchased on-line instead of their local outlets
  4. discount coupons for the same items if purchased online instead of at their local outlets.
  5. free shipping for online purchase but same item purchased from local store with home delivery will cost you min $25 extra.

You get what you vote for!!!

#2 UPDATE Employee

From your own description, CyberDefender technicians fixed your inoperable computer. How were you scammed?

AUTHOR: CyberDefender - (USA)

Dear Customer,

The Cyberdefender customer service department would be happy to investigate the status of your account, but unfortunately we cannot find your account from just the online nickname stopripoff and need more identifying information in order to assist you. We would be glad to work with you towards a solution for your unsatisfactory experience, so feel free to contact our corporate headquarters toll-free at 877-229-5957, or email us at supportATcyberdefender.com, and please be sure to give us your full name, date of purchase, and the email address you used when you made your purchase. We will be happy to assist you.

From your account of your buying experience, you appear to have been under the impression that you were purchasing the PC Tools program when you purchased our companys program. The truth is that PC Tools is another computer security program offered by another company separate from CyberDefender. We are not certain how you set out to buy PC Tools and ended up buying our product, but CyberDefender does not and has never made any claims to be affiliated with PC Tools on any of our websites or in any of our advertising. We apologize for any confusion.

CyberDefender is an American, California-incorporated company, but is possible that when you called our call center, you could have spoken to an American customer service representative with a Latin-American, Russian-American, or Indian-American accent, or spoken to one of our after-hours overseas reps in New Delhi, India or Manila in the Philippines. CyberDefender is an equal-opportunity employer, and our Los Angeles workforce consists of talented people from a great number of ethnicities and backgrounds, reflecting the extremely diverse mix of cultures in our hometown.

We also outsource some of our very considerable customer service workload to overseas call centers, just like a great many large American corporations. Since you called our company with a non-functioning PC (since I was unable to use my computer) it sounds as though you had pre-existing computer problems when you called our helpline. It then sounds as though you agreed to one of our free diagnostic computer scans to detect what was the matter with your PC, which then located the virus that had corrupted your Windows startup files. Corrupted Windows startup files could very easily be the root cause of the PC problems you are describing, and were probably what caused you to lose data on the project you had been working on.

Please note that Best Buy charges $80 JUST to diagnose PC problems, while CyberDefender performs this service for FREE. Also, our company offers both software and technical support packages for sale. Our basic software subscriptions do not include unlimited free live support on any and all technical problems that arise after purchasing the subscription, or that already exist on the customers computer before he or she contacts our helpdesk. Any customer wishing to utilize our technical support services beyond activation of his or her subscription must purchase a technical support package. Purchase of such a package is always entirely optional.

From your description, it sounds as though you bought a tech support package for $249, and then our technician Upinder Singh proceeded to cleanup all the registry that the previous guy showed me and soon my computer was working. So one CyberDefender tech ran a diagnostic scan on your computer, and then a second CyberDefender technician proceeded to clean up the corrupted registry files, and soon your previously non-functioning PC was working.

So it begs the question of why do you think you were scammed?

It looks like we fixed your computer, just like you paid us to do.

You called CyberDefender with a non-functioning PC, and our technicians got it working again. Plus, you had your computer fixed by remote access and didnt have to leave home. You didnt even have pack your computer up and take it into a computer shop and lose access to it for several days while it was worked on.

When you think about it, this is exactly what would happen in a car repair shop you take your non-functioning car in, and mechanic examines it and tells you whats wrong. You agree to the repairs, they fix it, and you pay for the mechanics services.

We are not sure why this matter would merit the attentions of the California attorney general or would even qualify as a rip-off of any kind, but as the customer, perhaps you can tell us why you feel this way.

Again, we would be glad to work with you towards a solution for your unsatisfactory experience, so feel free to contact our corporate headquarters toll-free at 877-229-5957, Monday through Friday from 5:00 a.m. 10:00 p.m., or Saturday and Sunday from 6:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., or email us at supportATcyberdefender.com, and please be sure to give us your full name, date of purchase, and the email address you used when you made your purchase.

We will be happy to assist you.

Thank you,

CyberDefender Customer Service
