I purchased a Bestar lateral file cabinet from Cymax. I had never heard of them before, but their website looked professional and the purchase went smoothly. Their indicated via e-mail that they shipped my item, but did not include a tracking number for the shipment, which I expressly had to ask for. A couple of weeks go by and no item. I contacted Cymax and they said that they couldn't help me and that I needed to deal with the shipper. I knew things were going to go downhill at that point because every reputable company would help you as much as they can to make sure you get your product. I finally was able to reach the shipper and they would give me a window in which they would ship the item.
When the item finally arrived after my wife had to wait all day to receive it, when she asked to inspect the item, the person from the shipping company got annoyed and refused to wait. Inspecting the package would have taken hours since everything was boxed yp flat so it was impossible to quickly detemrined if something was broken or damaged. When I began putting the item together, I was astounded by the number of pieces required to assemble the item. Although Cymax noted that assembly was required, this item was far more complictaed than the dozens of other pieces of furniture I have assembled over the years. In fact, the instructions said 2 people are required to assemble the piece, which is clearly not outlined in the description of the item on Cymax's site.
When I got into assembling the piece, I noticed that the top of the item was worn and scratched. It looked used. Also, the package was missing the back to the cabinet and the bottom of one of the drawers in the cabinet. Finally, when I went to put one of the drawers in the first time, the sliding mechanism broke and all of the ball bearings came loose. All in all, the product was flimsy and of poor quality. I indicated all of these issues to Cymax. they said they would fix the broken pieces, but due to poor qualify of the product and all of the issues I had endured to that point, I just wanted a refund. The came back with the following response:
"Alternatively, if you do not wish to receive replacements, you are welcome to return the item for credit and below I have attached a breakdown of the credit that would be due as per our Standard Return Policy.
Original Purchase: $206.15
20% Restocking Fee: $41.23
Outgoing Shipping Fee: $88.24

Total Refund Due: ($-11.56) (please note that no credit would be due)"
Which is almost no refund at all."
I have disputed the charge with AMEX and hopefully Cymax will not see a penny of the money for this item.
Their "Standard Return Policy" is onerous if not illegal and their customer service is terrible.
Stay away from this company.
