On August 9, 2008 I got a letter from this collection agency stating that I owed Sprint $213.74 for a former cell phone bill. I called and made an inquiry to a woman named Amy. Amy told me that I owed the amount. I asked her if she any paperwork from Sprint because I gave Sprint a $150.00 security deposit and that I owed them the difference. I admitted owing the balance minus the deposit but not the whole amount.

She stated that they do not have copies of bills, or any documents. They just get a report of who owes what. I disputed the claim and asked for a proper mailing address to send what I owed. Well...

Instead of allowing me to pay what I thought was correct she went on and on about why I waited so long to call to talk about the account. She asked why I ignored the letters and waited 6 months to call. I told her I am ready to pay the bill now. She just went on and on about how I dont pay my bills and she has access to my credit report and she mentioned to me about my other credit cards, by name, the amounts and the past due balances on them.

Again, I asked her to pay the bill and she said "why us? you owe over $10k in bad debt." I just listened to her talk to herself on speaker phone and finally told her that I recorded the entire conversation. She shouted "You can not do that only we can, it is illegal." I told her I dont remember anyone telling me that our conversation was recorded and if it was she just sank herself with her verbal abuse towards me.

I hung up. She called me back and instead that she wanted to talk about my credit with other companies....I told her that was her second call for the day and if she called back I would call the police. She said "OOOOOOOO the police in your town are going to fly out here and arrest me" I said "NO, they will file a complaint against the company and you and bring the charges here and you will have to appear or you will have a warrant out for your arrest in Boston." She hung up again.

After weeks of dealing with all my creditors, I decided to file Chapter 7. I called Amy back with the news that would make her day. I also faxed her a copy of the docket number and the letter from the court. She got more crazy "We will fly out there and make sure this is NOT included in your bankruptcy and you will have to pay for our flight, hotel and expenses." Then I laughed at her and said "Look Amy or The Wicked Witch of The World your letter states no clause about that and if you want to come to the court for the bankruptcy, I have the recordings, the notes about our conversations and a police report for your threats."

She just put on a fake cry and said I was abusing her. I pushed the numbers on my phone gave her a headache for once and hung up. NEVER heard from them again.

I called and left a message for upper management at Sprint and they actually called me back and said they LOVE this company! They get 80% of people to pay. I told them how they did it and Sprint told me "Who cares.........we need our money back and if we don't, we will just take the matter to court ourselves. I mentioned to Sprint about their lawsuits with early terminations and other problems with contracts. The guy froze and hung up."

SPRINT OUT...

A very strict debt-collecting service, but nothing to be afraid of

AUTHOR: JZ from Rochester - (United States)

POSTED: Wednesday, September 12, 2018

I have a huge bill from US Cellular that got transferred to Diversified Adjustment Service (DAS). It was my fault because I cancelled my account before the contract was over. However, I have a huge issue with US Cellular's treatment of their customers. DAS is nothing to be afraid of, nor are they apparently some scheme or trap.

I find it highly unbelievable that DAS debt collectors would abuse anyone over the phone, nor that they would speak about someone's debts so casually.

DAS is strict because they do not readily do settlements; instead they want to see activity on the account for some time before considering it. Now I understand that might seem harsh to some people, however the reality is they want to collect this money. To get it off your credit report is the biggest issue in my eyes. I am on a payment plan to eradicate the debt and I will await a settlement later.

There's no use arguing with DAS since they seem fair. Other agencies accept settlements almost immediately. Again I am more concerned with US Cellular's treatment of these kinds of cases.

If you have any hesistations or worries about working with DAS, just be honest with them. You have control over the payments anyway. You can setup a payment plan for any frequency and amount. You can also just call in every so often and pay whatever you want. I do $50.00 every week or two weeks.

Because I want this off my credit report - keeping in mind I disputed the bill with both US Cellular and DAS - I am going to pay it.

I don't believe DAS is a rip-off, however I can only speak for my situation.

I am responsible for my debt here because I ignored the contract terms and forgot about the huge cancellation fee. Nevertheless I think DAS can be trusted. Don't believe wild stories of verbal fights and threats, because that is either completely false or a one-off situation.

I've dealt with nasty representatives of companies before, however nothing so extreme as described by some people.

I think the bottom line with debt collectors is communication and a strong understanding of the process. Dispute what you can and be honest. If you are caught lying or misleading any company that can mean trouble for you. Stay active with the account and seek settlements often. You may just annoy them with numerous payments and requests... and who knows, they just might settle.

At the end of the day it won't disappear on its own. And as far as I can tell Diversified is their real name. But it is not uncommon for a company to be owned by another entity, so therein may lie some confusion on the name. Who knows.

Thanks

JZ from Rochester
