i've worked for Dallas county for over 3.5 years and if there's one hing ive learned while there, you don't talk bad about the county. you don't fight the county, the county can do whatever they want to you and they are right. they own you. according to the general orders and state law on FMLA, an employee is allowed 12 weeks of leave in a 12 month period.
in October i was 5 months pregnant and injured my back and round ligament and took 2 weeks off. before this time it was in 2006 since i had taken any time off. that was over 2 years before. i got the flu and was going to be induced on march 11 of 2009 so i took my leave on the 7th with Sgt klepplids permission. he told me to call and talk to the lieutenant about getting paid for sick leave. after calling for 4 days straight at least 3 times a days, they told me i wasn't going to get paid, which i knew was going to happen even though they had made exceptions for other people, and that i can go ahead with my maternity leave.
the day after my c section i began to get harassed by internal affairs investigator brown. she claimed that Sgt David (((REDACTED))) and Lt (((REDACTED))) of North Tower claimed i was a no call no show this entire time. MY LEAVE WAS APPROVED. She said i had to call in everyday that i was on leave. no where int he GO or SOP does it state that. it says to call after 30 days. and if i was no call/no show, why didn't they call me to see if i was alright, which is in the general orders as being something they are supposed to do. i told her i was in the hospital and i would have to call her back. i immedialey called sgt roberts and he claimed he had no knowledge of what was going on, even though she told me it was him that sent me. i had previous problems with him before he became a sgt. he was the snitch for sgts and when he got caught telling the office business to officers he said it was me doing it when there was noway i could know that stuff unless i was in the room. thats when we stopped being friends.
4 weeks into my leave i get a letter from chief (((REDACTED))) stating my fmla ends on 5-8 and i would have to apply for leave of absence. i was fine with that.
we are now up to 6 weeks of leave.
on my 7th week of fmla i go to pick up pills that are medically necessary for me to take daily and i find out my insurance had been canceled. i called everyone the following monday. human resources claim my fmla ran out on 4-10 and that they dont cancel insurance in the middle of the month. she refused to hear me when i said she cut me short. i still had plenty of time left. she said the COBRA insurance paperwork should be to me within the week. this was the first week of may.
may 22nd i receive a letter from COBRA claiming my insurance was canceled due to "non-payment".i called hr and they claimed they had no idea what that meant. i still had not received the benefits package yet.
so i go and get medically released from work because as long as i was at work by the end of this month i would have insurance for june. the doc puts me on light duty for two weeks. hr said i would have to wait until tuesday to find out where i was going. it was friday. almost two weeks later and i am still not at work and still have no insurance. i finally got he cobra letter stating i owe them over $1000 in premiums for insurance that i never even had. the county is telling them one thing and telling me another.
cobra is investigating the issue but the fact remains that my son has two lumps on the back of his head and i had an sonogram set up but they canceled it when they found out i had no insurance. the doctor is afraid they might be tumors. he also has stopped breathing in his sleep a few times. i am so far behind on medical bills that i cannot afford tot ake him in. i have not gotten a paycheck in 3 months. they wont put me to work. its all because they are laying people off because they screwed up their budget by using county funds to throw parties and cover up things like 5 officers murdering an inmate.
since they did not place me and its already June, i will have no insurance for this month too. i cannot get federal aid b/c i technical have a good paying job even though i have yet to see a penny. be warty of the county and their practices. i know they will try to hang me for this. that's what they do. they ruin the lives of anyone that dare go against them. i know a guy that got his throat slit because a Sgt made him go check on a fight by himself and threatened to fire him if he didn't, even though they cant fire him a lot of officers don't know that, he went down the hall and an inmate slit his throat. he lost so much blood he has brain damage. county said they are not responsible for it. he had noted in the log book that the Sgt ordered him to go down the hall against his will, but somehow this was his fault? if you have a relative in Dallas county i assure you they are being treated like crap. the officers play on the phones and computers, as do Sgt, and pay no attention to the inmates even when it is clearly an emergency. i stayed for as long as i did because the inmates needed someone that was there to do their job, not just get paid and screw everyone. i will no longer be silent about the injustices i have witnessed.
