On 8/6/2011 I went to David Stanley Dodge in Midwest City to see about trading in my Pacifica for a new Durango. The reason I went in was because I got a mailer stating they were adding thousands of dollars to trade-ins to get you out from under your upside down loan. It also said come in to see what you won because it could be up to $10,000. Now I know I'm crazy for thinking I could actually win money towards a new car purchase but I was interested in the extra money towards the trade-in because I'd like a new vehicle.
When I got there around 5:30pm I was placed with a new salesman who was great. He was very nice and we drove a couple different vehicles. I explained from the beginning that I am currently paying $460 per month and want to keep my payments around this amount and he agreed. We tried out the Durango, and Town and Country but I liked the Durango. After deciding on the vehicle a tenured salesman began helping him. This guy was a big guy and very direct. He was a little uncomfortable to deal with but I worked with him anyway because I liked the car.
After waiting for an hour in the lounge the first salesman got me and said let's pick out which one I want so they can get the paperwork done. We went out and looked at the Durango Citadel and it was really nice. The Senior Salesman came out and told us if I wanted to keep my payment down like I said then we couldn't look at the Citadels. I understood and said then let's look at the middle model which is a Crew. Selected a White one which I test drove earlier and we began the paperwork.
Please keep in mind I said I could afford around $460 per month and never looked at the price of the vehicle. They told me couldn't do that with the Citadel but nothing said when we went down to the Crew. After another hour of waiting (It was almost 9pm) they came to me and we sat down in the office. The Senior Salesman had a sheet of paper and I saw the payment he was going to present which was over $900 per month. I immediately told him that's Ridiculous. I said around $460 and he brings me $900. He got defensive and started talking down to me. He started telling me it was "Crazy" to think I could get that much more vehicle and pay the same amount.
That's when he told me it was $41k for the vehicle and my Pacifica that I owe $14k on was only worth $6k to them so they have to roll the rest over. I told him I never would have looked at a $41k vehicle and he responded with, "Did you ever ask the price? I can walk you to the vehicle and show you the sticker." When I told him the flyer in the mail said they would add thousands to my trade-in to get me out of it and he said, "Where on there does it say we'll pay off 100% of your vehicle?" He began to berate me in the middle of David Stanley by the exit and I snapped. I said something I know I shouldn't have said while was walking out the door and he was talking down to me. I said, "This is BullS...!" and when he said something to me about being my fault that I owed so much on a $6k vehicle I responded with, "F... You" as I opened the door to leave.
The Senior Salesman that is a pretty big guy himself shouted, "No...F... You!" before I was out the door. I was caught off guard and immediately spun around. After I calmed down I realized I shouldn't have said what I said when I was angry, but I've been a manager for over 10 years and I've have many customers cuss at me, but if I ever said this to them I would have been fired. This salesman walked up to me and chest bumped me in the doorway. I told him I was speaking while angry but as an employee of the business it was ridiculous that he was speaking with me that way and he said, "No one is going to say F... You to me!" At this point we were face to face with our stomachs touching. He then waived some other guys over. 3 other people came out, 2 more salesman and a gentleman that presented himself as the Sales Manager.
I took a moment to calm myself and told the Sales Manager that after 3.5 hours I was very frustrated that I told them I could afford $460 per month and had a little give in that number and they brought me a number of $900 and I said stuff in frustration and was being treated this way. At this time I was against my car with the 4 guys surrounding me. The Sales Manager looked at me and said, "You should have looked as a cheaper vehicle. It's the Salesman's job to show you what you want to drive and your job to look at the price. You shouldnt have bought a Pacifica that's no longer being made. It's not our fault you owe $14k on a car only worth $6k." While he was busy talking down to me the original salesman that wanted to bump chests had walked up on me again. I asked him, "What? Are you the bouncer now?" The Sales Manager said, "Well I wouldn't mess with him." At this point one of the men standing around me suggested I just leave.
I got into my car and the men stood around my car looking at me and laughing until I backed out and drove away. I have to say that this is the first time I have ever felt physically threatened by a salesman or group of salesmen. I still admit I shouldn't have said what I did in anger as I left but this temperament from the guys at David Stanley is not normal. I was leaving and they chose to escalate the issue. This needs to get out and stopped before someone doesn't walk away.
