DeVry University Online AKA Devry, DeVry University. 3 year program turns to life of pain, no degree Columbus Ohio
Summer of 2009 I am an eager student to attent a college, so I start looking at my options. I find DeVry University, that has an online class system. I am rather intriqued to find a technical college with the degree I want, and its a 3 year program to boot.
I get a call after signing up for an email information packet. The guy on the phone asks me what I wanted to do, Forensics Science, I said. He says ok we have a program for that. He tells me about how he took a class for forensics and it had crime scene investigations, blood splatter, and mock mysteries we got to solve! How awesome right? I was for sure stoked about this. He also told me since I would go online, and year round, 3 semesters a year, it would only take 3 years to complete my degree, and would be completely covered by financial aid.
So I sign up and start taking classes, filler classes left and right because they are "required" to get to the next classes, so I am taking all these nonsense high school classes for 2-3 years. I have yet to take a single class revolving around forensics, or anything criminal justice related. Instead I complain and I started to get CIS classes, which are programming classes for languages: C+, C++, C#, Visual Basic, C++ OOC, HTML Web Design, and the sort.
I took many classes with CIS in them, to find out after I started taking them, I was signed up for a CIS Degree (Comuputer Information Sciences). Nothing to do with forensics, completely not even close. I was never told it was a computer related program, I was told it was blood splatter, and murder investigations and the like. So I was like ok, I can go into cyber-defense then, no big deal right?
So I am getting all these student loans, without knowing where my money is going, $4,000 to 7,000 in tuition per semester for online classes. I start to get concerned, so I get "bills" in my email saying I would owe thousands of dollars, next week. I called their financial aid, and they said dont worry about it, its just us applying your financial awards to your account. So I continue classes through now, which is 2013. I started in 2009, Exactly almost to the 4 year mark. They would keep signing me up for 1 class a session, 2 classes sometimes 3 per semester MAX, telling me this is all I could afford under my financial aid.
I was being concerned, but I kept on going, you know trying to get a degree to make it in today's world. I still continued 2-3 classes MAX per semester through the years. I am now sitting here at about 84 credits completed, after 4 years. My degree requires 120 credits. They are now telling me I owe $60,000 in debt via student loans, and that I have to pay $23,000 in just tuition, not counting any other fees, out of pocket to complete my classes, which are all 3-4 credits per class remaining.
Where did all my loans go? They kept giving me loans, and then issuing refund checks for thousands of dollars telling me that it was left over after the classes were scheduled. So tell me if you give me $1,000 to $3,000 refunds, why am I NOT eligible for more classes? Well due to your financial aid you are only approved for 6-8 hours a semester, which is part time student status.
And literally every time I had to register for a class, or classes I had to call them because there was something ALWAYS wrong with my financial aid, or a hold on my account for something. I called them and they'd say "you do not have enough hours this semester to get aid, you must pay out of pocket, or sign up for a different class, usually a higher credit, more expensive nonsense filler class.
SO I get to this November/December and there is a hold on my account, for the said reason above, I filed for 3 sessions, which just came to an end today as my last day of the 3rd class, a science class for Wellness and Fitness. I get an email asking me to register for my next session (a week or 2 ago). I reply to my advisor (YES) I want these classes, I get a response "there is a problem with your aid, there is a hold on your account)
I call them this week, and they tell me I have an outstanding balance from November and January resulting in $1,300 that is due before I can take any more classes, in which they told me these sessions were covered under my aid, so where is the balance coming from? I asked them and they told me I have reached the loan cap. What is a loan cap, I have never even heard of a such thing as a loan cap. They tell me I have reached all the financial aid that I can have.
I had to make a payment of $900 to continue classes, which is out of pocket expenses, because I felt trapped that I am so close to my degree, which I have since decided this is a rip off and a scam, they used all my loans, which I for sure do not feel I got $60,000 worth of collegee, since most of these things were high school level classes. They set me up for minimal classes, and silly classes to fill up my loans, so as I got to the latter classes I'd not be able to complete my degree, and have to give them even more money out of pocket!
They didn't even have any sympathy for me when I called in, they just told me that there is nothing they can do that I have to pay them back all this money and loans and such. I felt they lured me in and just used me and took advantage of me without me knowing what is going on.
If I would have known this before I started I would have settled for college around here, which would only set me back $15 to $20,000 for a 4 year program WITH a degree. As of current I have about 60% of my school completed, with another 2 years to go, per DeVry's wording, resulting in another $23,000 tuition to finish my last 10 or so classes. I am stuck $60,000 in dept with nothing to show for it.
