On 8/3/06 at or about 2A.M. I decided to go to Denny's to order take home order of French Toast breakfast. As I enterd Denny's to make my order a Black waitress told me that "You cannot eat in my restaurant with a outside cup". I mean real rude like. In a unprofessional like way. I did have a cup in my hand.

I am a Black man. If they did have such a policy, she when in about a rude like way to let me know. Would she have informed a White individual about that cup in the same rude like way. I felt belittled, stepped on, and downright prejudiced.

I am a dialysised patient and at time feel downright awful after sitting or lying in a reclyend chair 4 1\2 hour while the machine clean all the impurities and poisions out of my blood. So after going by the ATM machine to draw out so money to eat,( cause my SSI money will not delivered to my bank account until 12 AM or midnight Thursday morning),I needed to get some food to help pep me up.

As I said before the waitress, who's Black informed me that I could not eat in her Denny's cause I had a outside cup I my hand. So I just turned around , got in my truck an went to the International house of pancakes, and ordered and a french toast, bacon, hash brown potatoes, scrambled eggs, and I left the a more than normal tip. And was in formed by their staff that they do no have a policy about a no outside cup policy. I got in touch with a lawyer who's a well I'll call is a friendof mine, and he said that I should get in touch with the state attorney office to file on Denny's.

I wanted to file a discriminitory suit against Denny's or seek so kind of relief from Denny's if it's possible. I reilly felt downright mentally awful after that waitress talked to me in such a way.

One day that waitress will talk to someone, not me, in such a rude way and that person may have had a bad day and something awfully bad may jump off or may happen. I am seeking some relif in this matter. Two heads are better than one.

Overnight Fun

AUTHOR: Russ - (U.S.A.)

Back in the early 90s I worked at Denny's in Syracuse, NY. The ownership was a "minority-held" company called New Deal Investments. We had white, black, hispanic, asians..all were welcome because their money was the same color-GREEN.

On the overnight shift, especially after the bars closed, all the customers were treated equally--like drunk party people. As long as they didn't abuse the staff or each other everyone was served. The only time service was denied was when the customers were too hostile or obnoxious to others.

Made a pile of money, had a great time, and worked for a decent company.

The only discrimination we practiced was against Canadian money.

Denny's has a History alright.

AUTHOR: M (FlyingScooter) - (U.S.A.)

I can't say that racism is in their history, though.

Back in early Denny's days, when they had the British Burger (first restaurant burger with bacon on it)
if you ordered breakfast, nine times out of ten, they'd bring you mustard for your pancakes instead of syrup. I'd get fries and they'd bring out syrup instead of ketchup.

They were always a bit off, but we still went there until their sausage links came out looking like severed monkey fingers. In the thirty plus years i've gone to Denny's, I've never seen anything racist about the place. Of course, cleveland is a fairly racially mixed-up place anyway, which really isn't a bad thing.

Denny's Has A History...

AUTHOR: Joe - (U.S.A.)

Denny's Restaurant has a history of discriminating against African American patrons and has been successfully sued at least two times because of the extraordinary rudeness with which their extremely racist personnel embarrassed, Harrassed and insulted the African American patrons!

Hell, they did the same thing to me and my companion and we weren't even African American. We were Native Americans and over 40 years old.
A white friend of mine warned me to NEVER GO TO THE DENNY'S ON BURNET ROAD in AUSTIN,TEXAS! Horrible food straight from the trash cans of hell and the service to match!

In our case, it was an African American waitress and a WHITE woman manager.

I think Denny's people have problems with rudeness. Or it just looks that way. Period.

IF the Denny's was in Texas and IF they have a license to sell alcoholic beverages on the premises, then the waitress COULD tell you that you could NOT bring an open drinking utensil (E.g., paper cup or glass) WITH LIQUID INSIDE in their establishment. That is a Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission ruling. It could cost them their liquor license.

No liquor license? Still an open container with liquid inside? She was STILL right! There are some pretty tough new public health laws and ordinances that have been enacted under the War on Terrorism aegis, so I am told. State, county and city healt departments plus any federal regulations that might have been enacted could apply. Maybe an attorney could look them up because I don't have time but I do know that they exist.

RUDENESS is just doing business as usual at every Denny's Resaturant I have been in. Even though I leave a 20 percent tip and am extremely courteous to the help because I would want people to be courteous to me, THEY ARE STILL SNIDE, RUDE, BOORISH and made me wish I had spent my hard-earned money ELSEWHERE.

I haven't been in a Denny's in a while.At least a year or two. Maybe longer.

If you were treated rudely there, maybe you, too, should not go back and tell EVERYBODY you know.

In San Antonio, Texas and you went to a Denny's???
San Antonio has some of the BEST MEXICAN and GERMAN food restaurants in the country and since both cultures have a high occurance of diabetes (which usually attacks the kidneys and eventually required dialysis), they probably would have been a little more sympathetic to your illness. But since both cultures tend to have liquor licenses, you might be well advised not to take an open cup or glass container with any liquid in it onto their "licensed premises."

Black people AND white people and Asian people and Hispanic and Native American people can ALL be RUDE!

From my experiences, it is a job requirement to work at Denny's.

But I haven't sued anybody.

I LET MY DOLLARS DO THE TALKING!AND MY FEET DO THE WALKING...

Nicole..You hit the nail right on the head!

AUTHOR: Steve - (U.S.A.)

That is exactly right. An attitude of "entitlement".

FYI...People are only ENTITLED to what they EARN.

It seems like we have an entire generation, and maybe working on the second generation who feel they do not have any reason to learn how to read or write, have no reason to get a job, and want to promote this thug/gang culture.

My advice: Pull your pants up, get a job, and learn how to read and write. Raise your many kids the same way and keep them off welfare. Teach the values that you get only what you earn. You are "entitled" to nothing. This does not apply to only one race or culture, it applies to everyone.

You know who you are.

Question for the OP ...

AUTHOR: Peter - (U.S.A.)

The OP wrote: "As I enterd Denny's to make my order a Black waitress told me that "You cannot eat in my restaurant with a outside cup".

I do not see how being black and having a black waitress allegedly be "rude" to you constitutes discrimination.

I am so sick of the entitlement attitude

AUTHOR: Nicole - (Virgin Islands (U.S.))

Give me, give me, give me...yet I will give back absolutely nothing but to whine and complain about every time I am not given or allowed to do what I want.

Find something more productive to do with your time. This is all getting old.

Am I on Cadid Camera?

AUTHOR: Timothy - (U.S.A.)

This is one of those joke reports, right?

If it is, then I give it a 7 out of 10. Pretty good, but not on par with the Missing McNugget, and certainly short of the one where Outback Steakhouse was defamatory towards Australians.

But even if this isn't intended to be a joke, it's still pretty funny. You want to sue Denny's because they were rude to you? You think you were being discriminated against because they were abiding by a state law?

Good luck, bro! (any fellow O&A fans out there who may recognize that reference?)

Sorry Larry, NOT discrimination..Most restaurants have this policy..

AUTHOR: Steve - (U.S.A.)

Larry,

Most restaurants have a policy that you cannot bring in your own food and/or drink. How is this discrimination? Did they let someone else bring something in?

What does being black have to do with it? What does being on dialysis or on SSI have to do with anything? These are irrelevant items in your post, unless those reasons were specifically used or implied in not letting you bring in your cup.

Denny's already learned it's discrimination lesson back in the very early 1980's. Do you remember what Denny's was originally called in the south? It was called Sambo's..No kidding! The name of this restaurant was Sambo's and it had a small black man statue out front holding a lantern. This was a major discrimination lawsuit and forced the name change.

Descrimination???

AUTHOR: Kim - (U.S.A.)

How were you descriminated against? You were never refused service. You were told that you could not bring your drink with you and eat in their resturaunt. Did you ever tell her that you were placing a To Go order? That you would not be eating in her Denny's?

Are you claiming that you were descriminated against because you are black? By the black waitress? Or were you descriminated against because you're a dialysis patient? How did she know? Or how is that relevant to this whole report?

All you had to do was leave your cup in the truck while you went in to place your togo order. That is like taking a 2 liter bottle of coke into the local Pizza Hut to keep from paying the inflated drink prices.

Don't you have enough money?

AUTHOR: Marc - (U.S.A.)

You already have the taxpayers working their asses off to support you, and now you want to hire an ambulance-chaser to file a lawsuit to get you more "free money?" How about giving us all a break?

Get real !

AUTHOR: Raymond - (U.S.A.)

The racially biased BS that I hear in this notice is comming from the author who is in need of an influx of a settlement offer from a company that has had previous allegations of racism(I am not sure of the particulars) to supplement his SSI income. It is common knowledge that most restaurants do not allow adults to bring beverages(other than those for children on formula) into their establishments. These are businesses are in the business of selling food and beverages. Would you walk into a restaurant carrying a plate of pancakes, eggs and bacon the only items needed was a beverage and a place to sit and eat them.

Get away from the feelings entitlement and use your common sense man!! Per your own writings it was a black woman that asked you to(most likely) take your beverage outside or dispose of it and not refused you service.

The race card ... here we go again ...

AUTHOR: Peter - (U.S.A.)

Would you mind explaining how a BLACK waitress making comments to a BLACK customer is indicative of "discrimination"? I cannot fathom how you came to this conclusion.

So, the waitress saw you come in with a cup, and said you could not eat there. Instead of explaining that you were not there to eat but were there to pick up a take-out order, you left. What sense does that make?? Obviously, the waitress did not understand your intentions when you showed up in the restaurant, and rather than explain them to her so that you could both share a common understanding, you walked out and then try to play the race card by crying "discrimination." Oh please!! Does anyone else see how ridiculous this story is??
