In 2008, I was looking to further my education to help me move up into a management position, and or starting my own business. Between my time restraints and how quickly I wanted to get my degree, I interviewed with DeVry University. I met with one of their staff who walked me through the benefits, and cost it would take to complete my bachelors degree in business administrations. I enrolled, signing a contract that stated complete cost of my degree would be approximately between $50,000 to $51,000. After attending for three years with a 3.9 g.p.a, and 96 credits completed, I called up to schedule for my next semester. I was put on hold and transferred to the finance department, I talked with one of the representatives who stated that I have used up all my financial aid, and if I plan on completing my degree I would have to get a private loan to complete my degree. At that time I asked how much it would cost to complete my degree, I was informed that $19,000 should cover the cost for the classes, and the books.
After getting this information I reached out to FASFA to see what my balance was, I owe $72,000 in student loans. I was beyond shocked to find this out. I contacted DeVry both local campus and their corporate head quarters. Everyone who I have spoken with requested a copy of the original contract. No one will return my call. This financial burden, has lead me into bankruptcy, for a debt that I have incurred with nothing to show for. I don't have a degree, unfortunately for me they didn't offer an Associates for a Business Administrations. Now I'm in a huge financial whole, my credit is shot, all because I thought getting a degree would help further my opportunities in a career. I feel I was lied to and taken advantage of, because FASFA is government backed, I cannot dispute the charges through them. To hire an attorney they require a $5,000 retainer, and cannot guarantee that I would even win my case.
Please take my advice, and avoid DeVry University at all cost. It will cost you more than you anticipate, and will not save you time in the long run.

Did you read your financial aid paperwork?

First of all, FAFSA is the application for federal student aid, not a loan company. I assume you mean that you inquired with Sallie Mae or a similar lender. The school cannot take out loans without your knowledge or consent. You must apply for aid in July of each year, and sign paperwork that spells out the exact amount you are borrowing, as well as the loan terms (interest rate, payment amount, and so on).
Second, you stated that you were originally quoted a program cost of $51,000. You should have read every word of the enrollment agreement, as it most likely stated that tuition costs were subject to change. You then say that you were told you must borrow an additional $19,000 to cover remaining costs. That puts the total amount at $70,000... not far from the "surprise" bill of $72,000 you claim to have known nothing about. Again, in order to take out loans, you had to sign the paperwork! It is not the school's fault if you did not read or understand what you were signing.
Please learn from this experience. Read every single word of any paperwork that you sign. If you do not understand the terms, ask questions until you do!
