I moved and cancelled my cable TV services with DirecTV.  I returned my equipment late and was charged $500+ for it.  Given the move and some other things that were going on, I returned it late.  I called to ensure it was received by DTV, it was and I was going to get only $144 of it back... whatever, fine, but instructed her that I could not get the refund electronically to the credit card they had because I no longer banked at that bank and I would need to have a check.  She seemed concerned, but cleared this with finance and we were good go go...  this was in September of 2012.  I was supposed to get my refund check in mid-November.  I thought great... I'll add it to my holiday fund.

Now it's January and I haven't received this check as yet.  I call.  The customer service woman says there isn't anything being processed.  What?!  She apologizes and nicely gets things going yet again.  Whatever, fine.  Now it's March... still no refund check.  I call mid-March.  I was kindly told that a "check" was mailed to a former address.  I am mad.  I told her that this was ridiculous, as I receive statements at my current address.  She kindly gets this corrected and tells me a check will now be mailed to my correct address - she has cleared this with Finance.  Now it's almost April.  I call.  Now I am told that no refund can be given, because it was already paid out to my credit card (the one I no longer have the corresponding account for and haven't for about a year or more, and the one I specifically instructed was NOT to be credited as I no longer was with that bank!).  I was apologized to profusely but was told that I would have to go find the money myself, but they were very sorry.  I demanded to speak to a manager, but he just told me the same thing.  They told me there was no check sent.  It was about to be processed when they realized that a refund had already been provided onto the cancelled credit card.  To bad, too sad for me.  The only thing is.... I've heard people at work telling the same story.  What's the deal here??????  Fraud... skimming?   Show me the money!!!! My money.

Call your old credit card company. It's not uncommon for transactions to take place after a line of credit has been closed and when that happens, the credit card company still keeps records. They may have tried to reach you about the credit or may have even tried refunding you but with your move and everything, they might not have been able to get it to you.

If the old credit card company has the money, it should be easy to get the refund from them. If not, DirecTV is lying and you need escalate things with them. You mention you still receive statements, so if you're still a customer, try demanding they now credit your current instead. If you do have to follow up with DirecTV, continue to do so by phone but also send an email or two about this to their customer service people so you have written records instead of only having a completely "he said/she said" type of argument.

Lastly, as frustrating as this is, you got to remain reasonable to get results. Skimming? Fraud? Don't be silly. There's no conspiracy and going down that road won't get you anywhere. There's an old saying I try to keep in mind when things go bad when doing business and it goes something like "never attribute anything to malice which can be adequately explained by sheer stupidity." It sounds to me like DirecTV is just stupid, so if you work to help them figure it out instead of fighting with them, I think you'll get the results you want much quicker.

Good luck.
