Direct tv uses tactics that are borderline fraudulent! They get you to sign up using all kinds of little discounts and promotions. The sales people hide the fact that they will charge you if you have to cancel and then they will charge you for sevices on the TV satellite when you not even living in the same place. They want you to call them over and over to make sure you cancel. If not they will charge you for services (NOT RENDERED!!) until it's too late. If you dispute them then they just take the money out of your account at will!!. I signed up for service in 09/08. Because of circumstances beyond my control I had to move out of my house 6 months later. I called Direct TV and told them that I have to move and don't need the service any more because my new roommate already has Direct TV. They told me that they would just suspend the service in case I needed it down the road. Well I didn't need it down the road and little to my knowledge they restarted the service and kept charging me monthly.
Once I found out about this I called them and they wanted $900 for equipment, services and early cancellation fee. I sent back the equipment and tried to reason with them that I didn't need the service as I was paying for the service with my new roommate. Didn't matter they wanted $600 after I returned the equipment. I wouldn't pay the outrageous charges so they just contacted the my bank a withdrew the total amount. I recently tried to get back some of the money as I really only should have paid the early cancellation fee of $340 (even though it was never told to me prior to signing up, but was implied after i paid my first bill. This is what they told me on the phone!). They said that because I didn't call back after the 6 months that I owed them services. The house was vacant and equipment stored, but it didn't matter. What a deal for Direct TV. I had the service for 6 mos., paid them on time every month, tried to cancel. No services supplied and they make over $600 for this. They really have a great business going. I will never use them again and I am getting my roommate to cancel service also. What a racket!!!
