Direct tv uses tactics that are borderline fraudulent!  They get you to sign up using all kinds of little discounts and promotions. The sales people hide the fact that they will charge you if you have to cancel and then they will charge you for sevices on the TV satellite when you not even living in the same place.  They want you to call them over and over to make sure you cancel. If not they will charge you for services (NOT RENDERED!!) until it's too late. If you dispute them then they just take the money out of your account at will!!.  I signed up for service in 09/08. Because of circumstances beyond my control I had to move out of my house 6 months later. I called Direct TV and told them that I have to move and don't need the service any more because my new roommate already has Direct TV. They told me that they would just suspend the service in case I needed it down the road. Well I didn't need it down the road and little to my knowledge they restarted the service and kept charging me monthly.

Once I found out about this I called them and they wanted $900 for equipment, services and early cancellation fee. I sent back the equipment and tried to reason with them that I didn't need the service as I was paying for the service with my new roommate. Didn't matter they wanted $600 after I returned the equipment. I wouldn't pay the outrageous charges so they just contacted the my bank a withdrew the total amount. I recently tried to get back some of the money as I really only should have paid the early cancellation fee of $340 (even though it was never told to me prior to signing up, but was implied after i paid my first bill. This is what they told me on the phone!). They said that because I didn't call back after the 6 months that I owed them services. The house was vacant and equipment stored, but it didn't matter.  What a deal for Direct TV. I had the service for 6 mos., paid them on time every month, tried to cancel. No services supplied and they make over $600 for this.  They really have a great business going.  I will never use them again and I am getting my roommate to cancel service also.  What a racket!!!

DTV borderline fraudulent

AUTHOR: sdhfdon - (USA)

First of all.  I understand what you went through.  It sucks.  Maybe your salesman didn't explain EVERYTHING to you because it would have taken him 3 weeks to go through all the details, 99% of which you would forget before you walked out the door.  That is why they, and all other companies have CONTRACTS,  Which you signed, but obviolsy did not read.  It is also not DTV's fault that you had to move, nor that your roommate already had DTV.  YOU signed a CONTRACT.  Are you not familiar with them?  They are the things that companies have you sign, saying you "promise" that you will keep there service for 24 months or pay the penalties. DTV, Dish Network, Verizon, Alltel, Sprint, Sears, etc etc. The reason they do this is because they don't start making money on your account for about the first 10 months. AND, to prevent losers from signing up, not paying there bills and get free service for about three months before they get shut off.  Then they sell the equipment on ebay, and start all over.

If you bought a boat from the bank, then decided to move to the desert, is it the banks fault?  Do you expect to be able to "bring it back because you don't need it anymore"?  Or because your new roomate already has one?   NO, you sell it, even if its for a lose, (hence the "penalties DTV charged you).  Yes, they are a big company, but come on guys, if it was you, on a very small bases, would you?  Besides, what is it these days that people think a contract means nothing?  Jesus, get a gripe.  Back in the day a handshake was all it took, and even then they paid up whether they could or not.  They didn't go whine to the person who "trusted them" and gave them a loan.

Those receivers you didn't sent back at first ARE VERY expensive, and even a company that big can't afford to just "forget" about them. Yes, they need to get a handle on customer service, but every company has people who hate them and those who love them. Hell, I even get a bad burger at McDonalds once in a while, but usually caused by the "cook" not the company. If you had a family pet, and you needed to move, would you not find a place that you could have a pet?  Same with DTV, you could have found a place that you could use it. NOT reneg on your promise.

So my advice to you is......... do some research before signing on the dotted line, and if you do sign, keep your promise.

Direct TV is a shady company

AUTHOR: Chris - (United States of America)

Most people just think they are signing the installation paperwork when they sign Direct TV's "agreement".  Direct TV has been sued multiple times for their mouseprint and hidden "gotchas".  Most people have no idea that they are signing up for a 2 year agreement because Direct TV's employee's purposely hide this information, and it is never mentioned to you until you try to switch companies because you are not satisfied with their service.

I have read countless reports of people telling the sales rep they do not want to be in a 2 year contract, so the rep "waives" the contract provision only to find out months later that they are indeed in a 2 year contract.  Direct TV is known for overly agressive, misleading salespeople and once they get the sale the company doesn't stand behind what the customer was promised.  They basically tell you "Too bad.  If you don't pay us an absurd amount of money we will just take it from your account."

I thought about getting their service but I researched Direct TV and found they are one of the most crooked companies in this country.  Washington state is suing them for 'unconscionable' sales practices, on top of countless other lawsuits for improper and immoral behavior.  Say that out loud and then tell me this is a company that is on the level.

Agreement

AUTHOR: Stacey - (U.S.A.)

When you sign up for Directv you sign an AGREEMENT that states the cancellation fee. I have had this service for 8 years and have been completely satisfied.

Look and read what you sign.
