OK listen up everyone .....direct tv is double billing you to use there HD DVR boxes. You ask the question how ? Let me shed alight upon the these scurring roaches. For those of you who opted to go with direct tv hd dvr services and paid 300-400 dollars up front, did the representative happen to tell you that your not paying to own the box? Did they tell you that it was just a payment to enter into there so called lease agreement, which they fell to tell you about. Thats right folks you do not own your HD DVR box like all the other boxes they give you for a two year service agreement. As soon as you cancel because of a move or what ever, they promptly send a box telling you to return there merchandise or be billed an additional 475 bucks. Now mind you that you still pay a monthly charge for the box just like cable.. except cable dosent charge you 300-400 dollars for hd dvr box for a so called lease agreement. I'm by no means saying cable is better, we all know cable coustmer service sucks. But i will say be aware that direct tv has gotten bigger and greedier just like every other big company out there. So heres my question to all the folks out there who's a lot smarter than I. Can they legally get away with this. shouldnt there be some kind of discloure form stating you dont own the box or something to that effect. please let me know. Im very curious as to my options. thanks all for listening

HD, DVR, Direct TV Box, Scam??

AUTHOR: Tony - (U.S.A.)

Hello Vango: My two Cents for you here on the issue with the HD DVR box from Direct TV. Please keep in mind I am not an attorney or a Judge, nor do I play one on TV, but I also wasn't born yesterday. I think what you are getting at is, does this issue get into deceptive dealings, or deceptive business practices? There should be full disclosure when someone is buying something. Are you in fact purchasing the item or leasing it? The company should be straight forward about it. It would be nice if everyone told the truth and was honest, it would avoid the need for a site like this one here, the ripoffreport.

I also believe too, that as consumers we have to read everything before we sign it. If the Satellite company sold you a box, but never mentioned that it was actually a lease, then in my mind I would be thinking of negligent misrepresentation or even fraudulent misrepresentation of the product and services being offered.

If you feel you were taken for a ride, I would contact the Satellite (direct tv) people immediately and demand that they void this contract/ agreement and either allow you to buy it, or tell them you don't want it anymore, based on the grounds that the deal was done with deceptive intentions (misrepresentation) that you were not aware of, if you were, you might not have agreed to it in the first place; such as the lease. Did you sign anything, did they tell you in writing that it is a lease, did they tell you at all at anytime that it was a lease? If it is a lease, Who is going to warranty it, and for how long? How long is this lease going to go on for?

I know in my own experiences with Satellite and Cable you do have to pay attention to the fine print. IF you do feel the actions of direct tv are deceptive business practices I would suggest seeking independent legal advise from an attorney and talk to the Attorney Generals Office for your state, and maybe even a complaint to the Federal Trade Commission (FTC). I know in past dealings with the Federal Trade Commission, it does take them a bit to deal with stuff, but they do contact the company and try to get to the bottom of it. I have seen companies apologize and do an about face once the FTC gets wise to them. Remember too, it takes people like you who feel ripped off to file a complaint and say something. The more people who speak up, the more aware the public can be as to what is going on. I will also keep this issue in mind if I ever deal with Direct TV.

Good luck with it and please let us all know what happens.
