I have been a DIRECTV customer since 2007. I got an installation upgrade from DIRECTV on 8/19/13. I got this upgrade to the whole home DVR with Genie.
The technician, Alberto, arrived at my house. He proceeded with the installation. While he was installing the clients he told me we were all set and had me agree to terms and services, a two year contract. At this point he only had the screen up with the pins for adding the clients; no sound was pumping thru my expensive surround sound system. Only after the install did I realize the equipment (The HR34 Genie) was totally inadequate. I use optical sound ports and the equipment from DIRECTV does not have one, as my previous 2 boxes did. They have a newer model (HR44 Genie) with optical sound but the tech did not have one on his truck. The technician assured me DIRECTV would upgrade my equipment. He said it would not be a problem. He then handed me a pair of cheap RCA jacks and told me to pump my sound thru them/Had I known it would be a problem I would have had my old equipment re-installed IMMEDIATELY and not been locked into a 2 year agreement.
I contacted DIRECTV about my issue. After repeated contacts by phone and email with staff and several supervisors Directv is absolutely refusing to replace my equipment. They patently refuse to provide me with an HR44 and C41 Clients. They think the current equipment is adequate. My surround sound has a lousy, tinny quality it did not have before. This is a Downgrade in every sense of the word.
Since they have refused to upgrade my equipment I want to cancel but they will not waive $480 early cancellation fee which I was conned into agreeing to. Now I am locked into a 2 year agreement based on lies and deceptive business practices and DIRECTV will do nothing to address my concerns. The last supervisor I spoke to basically dared me to cancel and told me DIRECTV had millions of customers and did not need my business. She was rude and unprofessional. I advise anyone who is in the market for Cable or Satellite to avoid Directv like the plague. While I am taking steps to try and get out of this fee, I have set up Iphone reminders to disconnect their service the very day my two year contract is up if I am unsuccessful.

Easy Work Around

DirecTV guarantees all installation work for 90 days. Call in and have a service order built, for exactly the problem, poor sound quality. When the service tech arrives insist that he replace it with HR44. Their service techs shouldn't put up too much of a fight, once they realize that you'll just call in and have another built if they don't. DirecTV will charge them back for a repeat trouble call, if they don't. What's even more unfair is that the upgrade technician will get charged back either way, unless he's lucky enough that he's a service tech and gets this order, in which case he would not get charged back, but wouldn't be paid for that truck roll. Aside from not pointing it out as soon as he realized that he was disconnecting optical, he was just doing his job. They are instructed to use whatever is available and problably had recently received nothing but remanufactured HR34s. You'll find this to be true in DirecTV's(and most other communications companies) fine print.
