at its best!

While attempting to hold it together as a music student at UNT in Denton, Texas during the fall semester of 2001, I got a job as a picture framer at the local Hobby Lobby on the east side of town.

I was leaving work one day at around 5 or so. The store wasn't closing, but I was leaving for sure and the sun was still somewhat out. I usually parked on the north side of the building with the other employees, and I noticed a white van pull up just as I was getting into my '99 Ford Ranger 2x4.

The white 30-something guy in the van jumped out and asked me if I need any speakers?
I made it clear that I did not - and that I had no money to even pay my bills for the month.

This did not deter him at all.
He focused my attention on the boxes in the back of the van, and I knew something was wrong when a police cruiser made it's way around the back side of the building. The man jumped out of his skin, quickly closed the boxes of speakers and closed the back of the van.

The cruiser was not interested in what we were talking about, but it proved a point.
I had a strange inclination of being afraid of this man. He talked strangely and was jittery - like he was on coke.

He convinced me that the speakers were worth $1,500 each.
I convinced him that I had only $300 in my account.

We went to my bank (this kills me to remember this moment)....
and the guy follows me into the bank - because now he doesn't trust me.
And he had a right not to. I would have called him out on it with more people around us. But no. He followed me to the teller!!!!!!!!!

And the teller even asked me if everything was "alright".

I said "yes".

And in the parking lot of my bank on the side of I-35 in Denton, TX.....
a fool and his $300 parted ways.

I have never been dupped before or since this day in 2001.
