Dollar took $250 from my bank account for a one day $50 rental. I called the office and they said it will be refunded in 3 to 5 business days. What gives them the right to take five times the amount of my car rental directly from my account and hold it for up to five days. This is a really unfair policy and it creates ill will with customers.

#1 Consumer Suggestion

This is standard practice

AUTHOR: Steve - (USA)

When you rent a car, they out a hold on your credit card for a larger amount than the rental cost, in case you damage the car. Since you used a *debit* card, this means that the money "held" is taken out of your account for a bit. Next time, use a credit card.

Who gives them this right?

AUTHOR: Robert - (U.S.A.)

You did.  When you signed your rental agreement you agreed to allow them to hold a deposit.

Apparently you have never rented a car before or this is the first time you used a Debit Card to rent a car.   Because this deposit is standard with EVERY company.  While the amount of the deposit is based on your estimated rental cost, as a standard most companies will hold a minimum of $250-$300.

Because of a way a Debit Card works, the deposit is actually withdrawn from your account, where with a credit card they just "hold" this amount.  This same thing applies for things such as Hotel Rooms and Pay at the Pump gas stations.

Also, while I can't speak specifically for that location when I have rented cars there is always a notice around the sales counter that states that the funds will actually be withdrawn if you use a Debit Card.

Unfair policy?

AUTHOR: Inspector - (USA)

What gives you the idea that this is policy and not just an accident or misunderstanding?  And exactly how where you ripped off.  GROW UP!
