my step-daugter was seeking information about a EDP credit card, she checked the terms and conditions to find out that it cost $159.95, she cancelled by not agreeing and signed off, a month later, a check for$159.95 was presented to my bank, the money was not there, so i was charged a $30.00 dollar nsf charge, i called EDP, and was told that they can send it again up to three times. i went to my bank to put a stop payment on it and was told it cost $30.00 dollars to put a stop payment on the transaction, this all started with advertizement on a website called phone hog. on the web site: it said free phone minutes for just for completing an application for a credit card, there was no mention of $159.95, and no acct# was givin at anytime,so how did they get the acct number? the only company who had the number was phone hog, there has never been a signed authurization giving phone hog permission to share account information with any other company, i used my debit card to sign up for phong hog only. i am on ssi, i am disabled, and can,t afford this rip-off from any company or indiviauls

#1 Consumer Suggestion

Double-check your information! Something isn't right.

AUTHOR: Kevin Fields - (U.S.A.)

I realize that this story is over a year old, and has probably been resolved by now. However, you may want to check your facts again to see who is to blame.

I've been a PhoneHog customer since 2000, and nowhere do they ask for any type of bank or credit card information. They don't need it, they don't use it. PhoneHog could not have given this information to any other company, they never had it to begin with.

On the other hand, it is quite common for credit card companies to ask for that information. EDP is a pre-paid credit card, and pre-paid credit cards require that you submit a checking account or other form of payment, which will be debited so that the card will be funded. There are quite often fees and services charges attached to these cards, which make them a very poor financial choice to begin with. I've worked for a company that processed similar applications for pre-paid credit cards over the phone, and I always made it clear to applications just what the associated fees and costs of the card were. It surpised me just how many continued on with the application process, considering that you can oftten get a Visa or MasterCard debit card from your bank for free. If they don't automatically offer you one, then going in and asking for a free one should get you one.

IF EDP had your checking account information, it was most likely because your stepdaughter submitted it to them. Unfortunately, it apears that they decided to process the cancelled application proess. Looking around the Internet, I see this has been a common complaint with this company.

Your bank, however, should have been on your side for this. Instead of asking your bank to put a stop payment on it, you should have asked them to investigate the transaction as fraud, since you did not authorize this payment. That would have put a temporary freeze on the account, but would have had your bank immediately looking into the transaction and looking at getting it reversed.

Hopefully this situation was properly resolved, and the worst you suffered was a $30 NSF fee.
