EVERYONE READ ABOUT HOW EBAY REMOVED MY CHARITY AUCTION WHERE THE MONEY WAS GOING TO GO TO HELP THE VICTIMS OF HURRICANE KATRINA.

Ebay has a program where you may list an auction and have a percentage of the proceeds of your auction dollars go to victims of Hurricane katrina.

I had 2 auctions listed, one of them having 50% of my auction dollars that i generated to go to the victims of hurricane katrina via the American Red Cross. The 2nd auction had 10% of the auction dollars that i generated going to the victims of Hurricane katrina that auction was taken down as well. Since i was uncertain how how much auction dollars after the percentage was taken i would have left over i have decided to probably give more of the left over money to the american red cross to help the victims of hurricane katrina as well meaning if i brought in $100 at the end of auction and i would have at least $50 left over i was going to give more of that money to the victims as well.

Needless to say eBay removed both auctions that i had listed where the final auction dollars would be going to help the people of hurricane katrina. i have their email stating so. many people were watching this auction to see its outcome well they took it down.

aint that good of them. me a small person trying to help someone in another state by giving the money i would have gotten out of my personal belongings only for them to remove my sale.

Justing, get a grip

AUTHOR: Denny - (U.S.A.)

Ebay is one of thousands of ways one can donate to the Relief effort. Stop making a mountain out o a molehill. Ever hear of Red Cross? you know the orgnaization that does more in giving to those who have suffered at the hands of natural disasters? They are the nation's BIGGEST supplier of relief, money, clothes, bedding, and food in the country.

Ebay is "small" potatoes in the relief effort.

Get a grip folks. Donate to your LOCAL red cross or on their site if you're so concerned about getting money to where its needed. Why would you subject yourself to 3/5/7/10 day auctions when you can Just do it at this very moment

Everyone who is complaining that ebay is being tight with how they run their website needs to step back and look at what they are griping about. Really, its pathetic that you guys are arguing over a little website, when you can give DIRECTLY!

Craig, YOU are not reading

AUTHOR: Jason - (U.S.A.)

You will notice that both postings stated that if you mention donating extra amounts to charity, the auction will be pulled. All money donated must be donated through missionfish. Noone said you didn't sign up, but twice it was said that if you put in the auction description that you would donate more than what was going through Missionfish, then the auction would be pulled. This is so that people who bid on your auction know what goes to charity and are confident that it does indeed go to charity.

You stated in your original post that you did this.

Your auction was pulled.

i clearly stated this was a charity auction and of course i enrolled myself thru mission fish! how do you think i got to list an auction? ebay does not allow anyone to give to a charity auction without enrolling and you also get a header and link to the American Red Cross as well, in order for me to receive all of them html codes i enrolled! did you read this?

its just a shame that eBay took my auctions down, it is not only their image they hurt since i will not do another like this again but more of the people are more of a loss at not getting the money that i intend them to have so i have chosen an alternative to giving to the releif. thanks!

eBay POLICY!!!!!

AUTHOR: Michael - (U.S.A.)

In order to place a charity auction on eBay, you MUST either go thru MISSION FISH or eBay GIVING WORKS. Tha is the only way to place a charity auction. Any mention of the word CHARITY, or any other mention of a % of your auction going to help someone, will get your auction pulled. They require you to go thru one of their 2 methods due to all the fraud.

Extra verbiage perhaps the problem

AUTHOR: Jason - (U.S.A.)

If you put in the auction description that you "might" or "would" donate extra to charity... I think that might be the problem. Ebay wants to verify that if someone bids on your item, they know what will go to charity. So, if you set the auction at 50%, and said that you would donate more, Ebay can only guarantee that you are donating 50%.

Claiming that you would donate more could get more attention to your auction, causing higher bids and there would be no guarantee that you would actually donate more out of your pocket. No reason to believe you wouldn't, but real reason to believe there are people who would do this.

An example would be one of the many jackasses on Ebay who scam people. They put an auction up for a $100 item, say that the proceeds will go to charity. Pocket the money. That's a no-no. So, they put that 10% will go to a charity through Ebay, but to get more bids, they say they'll donate the rest to charity. Never do.

The other example, if your charity isn't listed with MissionFish (Ebay's charity arm) you start an auction with proceeds to go to charity.. The charity might be worthless or the charity might be the seller. For protection of bidders, Ebay requires the charity to be registered through missionfish, which verifies that charities are truly non-profit and money goes to where it should. A further, extreme, example would be that someone was donating the money to some terrorist organization.

Click the "Live Help" on Ebay's main page, and I bet that is the answer you get, or very similar. What you were attempting to do, while perhaps you did have honest intentions, could easily be abused. It would be just a slight offshoot of shill bidding.

The best way to do it is to set donations to 100%. Anything below that and Ebay takes out a fee from the donation and credit card processing charges. On a 10% donation of a $1000 sale, the charity winds up getting about $94.70.. On a 100% donation of a $100 sale, the charity gets $100.

ebay offered selers to donate

AUTHOR: Craig - (U.S.A.)

i can understand what your saying but it was all legitimate. ebay offered selers to donate a percentage of their auctions income and that is exactly what i did and they took it down anyways. i clearly stated that not knowing how much i will bring in i may just give more of the remainder to the same charity and that is the part they did not like. me giving more of the remainder of the money to the victims of hurricane katrina. as far as hosting auctions i host them everytime there is a need. unlike the ebay charity auction my personal auctions that we advertize to the public, 100% of those charity benefits go directly to the person and any other monies that come in, i even donated my paycheck for that benefit auction to the person as well. this is all done from the heart and goodness of man kind. evidently we dont have that here online. have a good day. i sleep good at night knowing that i am totally honest, we do honest charity for those who are in need. i cannot speak for the other person on the receiving end but to date we have raised nearly half a million dollars since october of 1999. from burn victims, persons with cancer, children or other family members who have lost a loved one due to death accidents and the list can go on and on. thankyou.

Ebay charity restrictions

AUTHOR: Raymond - (U.S.A.)

My wife is the president of a BONA-FIDE charitable organization and as the semi-legal advisor I can tell you that eBay is doing you a favor by pulling your auction. There are so many hoops that your state's Attorney General requires for charity auctions or contests that is nearly impossible for a little guy to help. Most people don't realize that it often ILLEGAL to host these events even though you only want to help. Kinda sucks but this is the reality. And it's not your A.G's fault either. The laws help keep the scammers from fraudulent money making schemes.

AUTHOR: Craig - (U.S.A.)

evidently if ebay does not like the manner in which you want to give to a charity that they sponsor they will remove you. i thought that ebay was a place to sell your items and offer them for sale to more than just the towns folk in your area, to offer something to someone who is trying to possibly find a replacement of something they lost, broke or to find the unique. if you are listing on ebay something to sell and its all legal, somehow they will find fault and take your listing down and somehow its like a ghost person who does this, ebay does not reveal who the person was who removed you, they give no response to their phone number or a contact person to talk to, if someone rips you off on eBay that is not their problem, if you are harrassed by a seller or bidder on an auction that has gone wrong, they will tell you to talk to your local police and telephone company and file a complaint yet they are the ones responsible for providing contact information on each other the seller and buyer. i personally have been ripped off and they have done nothing, it is your responsibility to take care of your problems, not ebay or their webservice they provide to you. i am a seller and a buyer both and all transactions are totally honest but yet you get one person trying to raise funds for a legitimate reason hence the hurricane releif efforts and you are sticken down. after having my charity auction removed i have decided to give to the people directly and forget about ebay all together on charity. they eveidently do not back themselves up when they say they will honor your charity auction they themselves are the providers but only on their rules and regulations not at the side of the people who need it most. does ebay offer their employees a dollar for dollar match for all the money they will contribute to help out in the releif efforst like my company has done? i bet not and i bet they never will. i think they are all talk i dont think they understand what their own service is all about. all the money they return to sellers for removing their auctions listings, that is not business thinking, they are not thinking about business what so ever.

does anyone understand plain english on this??

AUTHOR: Craig - (U.S.A.)

let me try this again but my response is the same. ebay offers sellers the option to give a percentage of their income on their auctions to charity. i was selling candles and other assorted crafts. now, not knowing exactly how much i would really be bringing in since this is a charity auction normally items go a little higher than normal. this is no scam. so not knowing the outcome i stated that whatever was left over from my percentages taken out of these 2 auctions i would probably give that remainder as well to the same charity as well on my own, giving a portion of the remainder of these 2 auctions to the same charity as well is what they did not like. is there anything wrong with giving additional money to charity when its your first time around? no one thinks there was anything wrong with that. the company i work for offered to match dollar for dollar for what i brought in up to $300,000. every little dollar helps the projected amount to the charity the first time around was $25.57 company match brings this total dollar amount to $51.14 this is money that ebay evidently did not think about as well when they took my auction listing down. as far as people on the watch list for this there was 1 person not including the newspaper and my company that was excited about this. now i had to report to my company that eBay took the auction listing down, this they did not understand and the newspaper who was going to do a second interview to me on this is now at a loss, all they reported was that my charity auction where the money was going to help the victims of hurricane katrina was removed, this gave more than a hand full of people at a loss for words.

Funny...I was just warned about a scam in a Yahoo Group about someone trying to sell candles under the false pretense that they would be donating proceeds to Katrina victims....I would just rather give cash to the charity directly. At least that way I know where it's going....and won't have to wonder if my hard earned money actually helped someone...

Just a guess....

AUTHOR: Jason - (U.S.A.)

You state that you were selling candles... I suppose there are folks that will pay $100 for candles, but not me.. Outside of that, you state that Ebay canceled it because there were too many watchers. Perhaps there were SO many (and i'm talking it'd have to be thousands) that they felt there was a scam going on. But i'm asking the question at Ebay now, and they say there is no such policy.

Now, pending on what the candles were... There could have been licensing issues.. For example, if it was a Mickey Mouse ears candle. Then Disney could (and probably would) have requested the auction be stopped as you have no right to sell such a candle. That's what's known as a VeRO violation.

i am wondering how many others they have done this to?

AUTHOR: Craig - (U.S.A.)

its like i said, since this was my first time doing this i clearly stated that i would give a percentage of my income on these 2 sales and not knowing how much i would have left over after my percentage was taken i would more likely give part of the remainder to a place i know that is also, in conjunction with the american red cross allowing people to donate money to them in turn they were giving it to the american red cross, this company is also doing their own personal employee dollar for dollar match up to $300,000 dollars of the companys own money as well. i was selling candles and hand made items and before a day was over they took it down. i could have said i will give 100% of the total brought in but i have already given my share of money to this worthy cause at the company i work for as well. I just wanted to raise some funds and make some money to help these people and all i wanted was for this to be fun for everyone. this is not the first time they have done this to me. they are pretty crooked!

here i am a small person wanting to raise funds to help others and they took my listing down, this was not the first time they have done this to me. i am wondering how many others they have done this to?

Red Cross Expenses

AUTHOR: Russell - (U.S.A.)

C.L has it just backwards, the Red Cross spends 91% of its donations on the programs like relief.

Why did they remove them?

I notice that you left out what reason Ebay gave you for removing your auctions. What were you trying to sell?

And the reason is???

AUTHOR: C. L. - (U.S.A.)

I am sure there was a just reason that they took your items off Ebay. Ask them to send you and explanation. Also, maybe you should consider sending the proceeds to another organization other than the Red Cross. Try Catholic Charities or the Salvation Army. Red Cross administrative costs are way too much. Out of $100 probably only $10.00 goes to victims and $90 goes to raises for the grand pupah that runs it.
