The Circle S Ranch was SHUT DOWN in 1978 by the Authorities, after an exhaustive investigation, which proved that ELLA & LEO STEIN were child abusers, MOLESTORS and BATTERERS. ELLA & LEO STEIN violated the civil rights of Minor children.

FOr over 25 years, they conned and defrauded the public into thinking they ran a "school". The truth is they ran a torture chamber, as they daily molested and beat up Minor children. ELLA STEIN did this right under the nose of the townspeople of Salome, Arizona. To be sure, the folks in salome KNEW the Stein's were perverts, because LEO STEIN was FIRED by the Salome School Board for teaching "crazy" stuff to the kids. What LEO STEIN and ELLA STEIN taught all these MINOR children, was that ALL of them wanted to have SEX...with THEIR own Mother!...and since their Mother was NOT at the "ranch"..it was OK to have sex with ELLA STEIN, the Mother of the Circle S Boys Ranch.

ELLA STEIN loved to fondle, have sex and then humiliate and BEAT the young boys, while her sick husband, LEO STEIN watched. When LEO STEIN beat the boys, ELLA STEIN loved to watch. This sadistic, SCIK perverted conduct was carried on every day as "therapy" for the boys...

ELLA STEIN terrorized these young minor children, and held them in captivity. Most of the boys were from broken homes, and many were "retarded" or "mentally ill".

ALL of them were UNLUCKY.

LESLIE "LES" STEIN, the eldest STEIN child now 60, was once a prodigy. Today, ELLA STEIN tells her friends, that LES STEIN is a "SKITZO", living on the street in California, and ELLA STEIN sends him an allowance to stay away.

ELLA STEIN ruined the lives of scores of children...INCLUDING her own.

We reap what we sow, and ELLA STEIN now lives ALL alone in Salome, Arizona, in squalor, with rancid, pungent "CAT PEE" in her home.

The EVIL ELLA STEIN, an OLD lady now, has paid the price of inflicting abuse and molesting minor children.

I think it is you that has the problem, not Leo and Ella, The last time I saw Leo he was about 78 years old and that was 30+ years ago and Ella was only slightly younger than he was. That would make them over 100 years old now if they were actually alive.. The fact that you are bringing all this up now suggests that you are the one who has the problems. Neither Leo or Ella were ever charged with any crime even after a long multi state investigation. It was found that all the allegations were false stories made up by boys who where know pathological liars. None of your information fit with the facts and the facts you do give are vague generalizations and accusations for which you give no supporting facts that can be verified in any way. Here are some facts, The ranch was shut down in 76 not 78 and it was done voluntarily by Leo. There was never any attempt by anyone to con or defraud the public. This always was a boys ranch for mentally disturbed boys. It was given the appearance of a school by Leo to give the boys a sense of self esteem. There was a library with well over a thousand books in it just for the boys to read. Leo bought elementary readers from the local school so the boys who could not read could learn how. There was a full basket ball court, 3 volleyball courts, an area for baseball or football to be played. The boys ate some of the best food money could buy. In the early 80s Leo and Ella sold the ranch and moved to northern Arizona to a quiet retirement community. They were never charged at any time with any crime. So there is absolutely no basis for any of your wild and false accusations which you have never offered any substantial evidence to support any of your claims.

All the skeptics who responded just proves how Sandusky got away with it for so many years. Nobody wants to believe their 'friends' or heros are capable of acts such as these. The first formal complaint for Sandusky was 1998. Question is how long was is going on before there was a complaint. Your reaction to this complaint shows exactly how the Stein's got away with it for so long. Better start opening your eyes people as these are not isolated events.

I did a lot of work for Leo and Ella and I was there during the time of he shut down. The facts are that Ella very seldom had any contact with the boys other then when the meals were prepared. Leo and his staff (all adults who had been boys on the ranch at one time and had successfully integrated back into society) where the only ones to have contact with the boys on a daily basis. Les, Leo's oldest son was away at school in California. Laura had recently finished High school (which by the way was right next door to the ranch.). Bobby lived in Phoenix. Caroline wasn't there because she went to a private school of arts.

The kids schedule was pretty much like any other kids, they got up at 6am and breakfast was about 7:30, by about 8:30 breakfast was finished and the kids went to do chores which amounted to basic housekeeping. when these were finished the kids went to classes. Many of the kids could not read or write even their own names. Other kids were what I would call prodigies and they taught the other kids how to read, write and do math. About 10:00am the kids were called to group. not all kids went everyday. Lunch was about 11:30 and after lunch there was free time until about 3:00pm when it started cooling off and then the kids played ball until dinner which was about 5:30 or 6:00pm. Most nights there were small groups that started about 8:00pm and stopped at 10:00pm There was no set bed time however the younger kids did go to their dorms by 10:00pm.

As for the actual shutdown, As I said I was doing a lot of work there and I never saw any police there and after the investigation was over only the kids who chose to leave of their own free will did so. I think 5 or 6 kids. 35 kids remained. the shut down was not forced and no legal action was ever taken against Leo and Ella. at the time Leo was 75 years old and simply decided that was a good time to retire. I frequently interacted with the boys there and 98% of the time they were great kids. Any abuse these kids suffered happened long before they came to the ranch. Leo and Ella made sure these kids were well fed and always had new clothes, shoes and boots.

I was there for about 8 months working for Leo and I never saw any abuse of any kind.. Dave if you were there at that time I probably knew you. if I remember correctly there were 3 Davids there about that time. There were no real fences around the 40 acre property and the front gate was always open. There were locks on the doors to keep intruders out but there was nothing stopping the boys from leaving anytime they wanted. The person making these absurd claims of abuse was probably one of the kids who was sent to the ranch but after a short trial stay there was rejected by Leo as being to unstable to be treated under those open conditions. I saw Leo and Ella a few years after all the kids were gone (about 1985) and they were getting ready to sell the ranch because it was too big and they were too old to take care of it. Oh and for the record Ella was a concert pianist. As for the Anti Semitic name calling.... Leo and Ella were Jewish so its highly unlikely that ever happened.

During 1970-1971 I was best friends with Carolyn Stein and spent a great deal of time at the ranch. I never saw an indication that those sorts of things were going on. We also spent time interacting with the boys, and I never saw any signs of physical abuse. The Steins were Freudian in there approach to therapy, which might explain the Oedipus complex theory. If these things were going on, they hid it well.

There is no question that Leo and Elanore "Ella" Stein were perverted, sick and nasty criminals. They stole the kids' mail, and when cash was sent, pocketed the cash! The Stein's 4 children were also involved. Leslie "Les" Stein is the eldest. He flunked out of college, and went to work for his Mom and Dad as a "Counselor". He became the "enforcer", as he beat many of these chlldren, while he was using drugs. This is a fact. Today, Les is living on Welfare in California, diagnosed as mentally ill. His own Mother admits this.

Laura Stein is a 60's something old lady. She has been married several times, and possibly was molested by her father, Leo Stein. No one is sure, but she always has "issues" with men.

Robert "Bobby" Stein was the 3rd child. He was always a "sissy" kind of child, who never quite measured up to his brother. He, too, was a drug addict, doing drugs with his Salome High school GF and with his brother at the Stein Ranch. After the Stein's were busted and shut down, Bobby moved out of Arizona.

The youngest child is Carolyn Stein. Nobody knows much about her. She was sent away to a private school, and only returned infrequently.

Leo and Ella Stein were monsters, and sadly, hundreds of boys suffered mightily. The irony is that their own children, clearly, also were adversely affected by their parent's sick behavior, which were forced to witness and live with for decades.

ALL of what I reported here is TRUE...If anybody truly has PROOF to refute these claims, please send me an email.

I was one of the folks who prosecuted the Stein's for the molestation and child abuse they perpetrated on young children for nearly 25 years.

The Steins were GUILTY as charged. We interviewed nearly 50 children who had been residents of this Ranch. The testimony came from children who had been there at different times, and did NOT know each other. It was eerie and creepy to hear children tell the SAME story which corroborated each other. Children who had been there in 1959 told us the identical things the children said in the 1970s.

Leo Stein would spit in the childrens face, and beat them for dropping a ball in a game. Ella Stein fondled the young boys, and told them it was ok to have an urge to want sex with her. The children were made to work all day doing the hard labor, and were fed very little. Later, at night, the children were made to have participate in group therapy where Leo Stein would rant and rave, slap, punch and kick the boys, call them vile names, including anti-Semitic remarks aimed at the Jewish children. Leo kept these sessions going until 1 or 2 am, and then demand that the boys be up again at 6am to start work. This sleep deprivation led to the children being disoriented and complaint with all the Steins wishes.

I read where one contributor asked a very profound question. He asked why none of the children ever reported the Steins criminal conduct to them. This is a wonderful question. The answer is that Leo and his wife had brainwashed these children by keeping them in captivity. The children had no television, radio, telephone, or mail. The children were 100% totally dependent on the Steins for their survival.

This was a classic case of Child Abuse at its worst. Abused people identify with their abusers and accordingly want to please them so they wont be abused anymore. It is called the Stockholm Syndrome, which all people who are held captive and abused suffer.

they are kind and caring people. they didnt beat or treat the children in any mean or sexual way. you people need to get help real lifes and leave ella alone. it is all lies nothing but lies.

"To be sure,the folks in Salome KNEW".I say ABSURD.I lived in Salome in the 70s and as with any small town I knew most everyone.The only thing anyone in Salome knew of the Steins was they ran a strict reform school and Leo had off the wall ideas on juvenile reform.Your description of why the whole town had to be aware of the situation is based on Leo getting fired from the School Board for teaching crazy stuff.Finishing your "crazy" stuff paragraph with the Steins teaching minors that they want to have sex with their Mothers is mis-leading to say the least.Do you really believe the Salome School Board,local farmers,ranchers and normal American townfolk turned their heads and kept silent,knowing kids were being abused by evil Communists on a ranch a mile from downtown Salome?Get real.You have gone to far trying to make your point.I just have a couple questions.If your facts are true and the Steins were arrested,why didn't they go to prison?Why didn't even one child,during the 25 years or so of abuse,go home and confide to Mom & Dad?I'm not supporting the Steins actions in anyway,but after reading your remarks about the good people of Salome,past & present,I can't put much value in anything else your saying.Think about it,what could the towns people have to gain by letting such things go on?Do you think they were all Communist perverts or just scared of Leo?Take my word for it,as someone who lived in Salome and drove past the Circle S Ranch 2 or 3 times everyday,Nobody had a clue what went on at that ranch and as far as I know,they still don't.Only here say and rumors.I think its fair to say it wasn't anything good or to be proud of.Anyway,try to keep your facts straight and think about your opinions before you share them.You make Salome sound like the Twighlite Zone for Gods sake.The Stein ranch could have been in any town,even your hometown.

We have lived in Salome for 50 years, and we knew the Stein's. Our daughter went to school with Laura Stein, the daughter. After visiting at Stein's a few times, she came home with disturbing things she had seen and crazy ideas about sex, so we forbid her from ever going on their place again.

We knew about the Stein scandal, but had no idea they were that cruel.

After reading all this garbage, it is apparant to us that the person who is sick, is the one who says "SUE THEM". This person must not have a life, and wh is this person to Judge what a ripoff is?

We feel sorry for YOU.

Ella and Leo Stein ran a well rehearsed, Fraudelent Scheme. They held themselves out as "Doctors". when in fact, Ella never went to College. Ella and Leo beat the children every day, depending on their mood swings.
