Moving cross country is a logistical nightmare when you deal with companies who do not hold up contracts, do not return phone calls, and in the end charge you 3 times what you expected to pay.
The details and dates of our moving experience are not what's important, but rather the SCAM that is happening in the home moving/relocation industry. I have read many complaints and the common themes are:
1) Over charging of cubic feet
2) Subcontracting of possessions without authorization
3) Redelivery Charges that are never communicated
4) Early/Late delivery dates
5) Poor or no customer service
6) Unreturned phone calls
7) Excuses, Excuses, Excuses!!!!
8) Cash only! NO BANK CHECKS and NO CREDIT CARDS for tack on fees after the company has possession of your personal belongings. It is a form of EXTORTION.
9) Refusal to put anything in writing.
10) Operate their business under multiple names
The management and owners of these suspect moving companies count on the fact that customers will pay additional fees to get repossession of their personal belongings. The question unfortunately becomes, Is the $800 additional fee worth gambling the loss of everything you own? They wear you down and frustrate you, until you feel like you have no other option but to accept the CASH ONLY additional charges to ensure delivery of your belongings.
The day of our delivery we bantered back and forth with the management about the fees with no resolution. Our personal experience involved a conversation with one of the men who delivered to our house. He had only been working for the company for one month and had witnessed multiple incidences with this occurring to unsuspecting customers. He was never informed of anything that was happening behind the scenes with all the mangers of this company. He had no idea that he was delivering to disgruntled customers. This has prompted me to complain everywhere I can.
I am reporting all parties to appropriate Better Business Bureaus, Consumer Protection agencies, and local news stations. If anyone has any additional forums where I can report these companies I would love to hear from you. I can be reached at email@example.com
These smaller moving companies are focusing on short term money making schemes and are not trying to build a customer friendly business. They will never be regulated unless people really start making a fuss over their personal experiences. It's not enough to write a passive complaint on a website. It may only be $800 to me, but when aggregated for every person this has happened to, it has to add up to some form of a crime. If someone broke into my home and stole $800 worth of merchandise, I certainly wouldn't let it go. In this case, I can identify who the crooks are!
