on sept 13 at 5:10 p.m. a salesman from Empire Today arrived at my door to give me an estimate for doing over almost my entire house in laminate flooring. We spent about 30 minutes choosing a fllor sample and another 10 on the carpet for the stairs. this job involved approx 2000 square feet. I had some idea what it should cost so IMAGINE MY SURPRISE when the salesman mentioned a 'tarfget price' of $53,000!!!!!!

Anyway after he calculated the cost using the square footage, discounts, coupons, etc etc etc blah blah he came up with a cost of..........$37,000!!!!!!!

Well my 1st response was that is way way more than I was prepared to hear so thanks for coming out here and goodbye. The he started 'the dance'. Let me call my manager and so forth. I'm like, don't bother we are way too far abpart to waste our time with this. No, no let me just check in. Come to find out the salesman miscalculated the job (or so he said). Now we were looking at a cost of $25,000 in round numbers and he is gonna throwh in the carpet for the stairs!!! BFD! So anyway, I like the floor and the carpet and they have the no interest financing offer and I'm prepared to make a large down payment, so we proceed. I write 2 checks for $100 each to Empire as deposits on the carept and laminate. He finishes measuring and finally leaves my house at 9:30.

The next morning I start having second thoughts as I am reading the contract and see some discrepancies between the salesman's 'rap' and the actual contract. I speak to a mid-level manager of some kind called Reuben (or so he says. He answers my questions re the misconstrued policies to my satisfaction.I then remark I thought it was pretty stupid to send a salesman with 1 week on the job out to do a job the size of mine. I now understand they rpobably don't keep salespeople more than a month becuase of their business practices. Anyway I tell Reuben I am uncomfortable about the price quote I received in view of the fact the salesman clearly was clueless about just about everything. Reuben says he looks at the order and after 30 seconds tells me,I in fact got the best price Empire can do for this job. I say okay and hang up. 2 hours later I call to cancel the whole order. My gut said something stinks here and take care of it before the 3 day cancellation runs out so I did. Incredibly enough when I called to cancel the lady came back on the line after a minute or 2 and gave me a confirmation number for my cancellation, but then she said, 'we would really like to keep your business, so if you decide to reinstate your order within 3 days we will reduce the bill from $23750 to $19,000!!!!! That is the precise moment I knew I had just dodged a very big bullet with RIPOFF written ALL OVER IT. Guess I should feel fortunate, but right now I'm still feeling raped and ripped off. I have never gotten my 2 deposit checks back (only $200)and today they showed up in my checking account, processed last night a full week plus after I cancelled my order.

Empire tells me that's their policy, and that I will receive my refund back in 10 to 15 business days from when they took it. BALONEY!!!!! They knew good and well long before they deposited the check in to their 'system' that they had no order from me. They should have dropped the checks in an envelope and returned them to me the day after I cancelled.

I know I will eventually get my $200 back, but I really think something needs to be done about this company. atfer reading all these comments it is painfully obvious that Empire is a cancer which is spreading across the USA and we really need to stop it. How about everyone combining their complaints into a class action suit v Empire or getting a natoional or local newscast to pick up the story. Our local CBS affiliate has been running 1 on EZ Lube out here for about a week now and I really think the chain is gonna be shutdown for business practices, poor workmanship, fraud, misrepresentation, etc.

This website makes us all 'neighbors' in a way. Let's do the neighborly thing and get after these lying, stealing, scum-sucking pigs!!!

IN DEFENSE OR EMPIRE CARPET

In defense of Empire Carpet I would like to offer my opinion I think Empire is the greatest company in existence.   My entire family has used them for at least 10 years.i have never had an issue with them.   Granted we did have a few problems with a few items.  However they more than compensated.   to give you an example my Mom ordered a carpet from Empire and while they were installing it my Mom realized that she didn't like it at all, even though it was the one she had ordered,    I called Empire and asked them what they could do about it. I even offered to kind of pay for part of the inconvenience.   To my surprise they sent the Sales Rep back for my Mom to pick out another color.     And guess what they didn't charge me a dime for it.   Let me say something here I have referred about 15 or so customers to them and i have never heard of one complaint from any of them.   You know when you look at the scope of the amount of jobs that they do.   The complaints are bound to be there with some people. I have never took the time to write to anyone like this. But had to offer my opinion on this one. and believe me my husband is a real perfectionist.    A very happy customer.........

...and then cancels a contract: STOP PAYMENT ON THAT CHECK! Ripoff companies like Empire will deposit it anyway!
