I recently rented a car for a two day business trip. Since I wouldn't be able to return the car until late Friday night the agent suggested I keep the car for a third day since I would be charged for a third day.

I returned the car in perfect condition on Saturday afternoon so as not to be charged for an additional day. Later that evening there was a hail storm in the area and all the cars on the lot received hail damage.

Since there was no agent on duty when the car was returned Enterprise is holding me responsible. They say "it's in the fine print of the contract". I contacted the regional manager who agreed with me in principal and I appealed the claim but it was quickly denied.

I received an invoice from "Damages Recovery Unit" in excess of $3400.00 for repairs. A few weeks later I received another invoice stating they had mysteriously found additional damages with a new amount of over $5700.00.

I've been a regular Enterprise customer for many years and have over $25000 of rentals with this company over the years. I can't believe they would treat anyone like this much less a loyal customer. My rental days with Enterprise have ended, as well as my family and business partners.

This company is utterly incomprehensible in their shamelessness.

Threaten to seek fraud charges against the folks dealing with you on this, and insist your local DA office investigate. Determining to legal satisfaction that the hail struck after you "likely" left the car on their lot should be easy.

Don't volunteer to pay anything.

If they don't respond to reason, sadly you probably will have to sick a lawyer on them too.

They are notorious for this, but they've also backed off to firm threats of legal action.

Their new slogan should be HAIL Hitler!

Get a lawyer

For that kind of money I would get a lawyer.  Get the weather report about the hail.  Hopefully when you dropped the car off there was some way to mark the time.
