We noticed unauthorized $89.95 charge for "Essentials 800-411-7846 CT" on a Citibank MasterCard. We have never ordered any goods or services from them. Called City Bank just to realize that they are affiliated with this company. We were outraged and wanted to close an account, City Bank suggested that they will dispute charges on our behalf and we call Essentials ourselves to resolve it with them.

It sounded like City Bank person has been thru this in regard to Essentials practices hundreds of times with others. We called essentials after hours and their automated system asked for our home number to identify us. After we entered our phone number it told us that our "membership" (???) is canceled and our account will be credited. Called Essentials next morning within business hours and guess what - they COULD NOT find any records of ours - neither by name nor by phone number nor by credit card #.

They suggested that we fax them a copy of our credit card statement at 402-661-2189 Attn: Customer Relations so they can identify charges to our account. City Bank agreed to fax it on our behalf but we have to wait for a week or so before we can contact Essentials again. This has earmarks of FRAUD all over it and City Bank should be ashamed of themselves.

#1 UPDATE EX-employee responds

Employees are forced to Push Essentials ..I did not believe in Citi Bank's unethical sales practices

AUTHOR: A Happy Ex-Emplyee - (U.S.A.)

I am an ex employee because I did not believe in Citi Bank's unethical sales practices. Employees are forced to sell a certain number of products each day or they are fired. Essentials is one of the biggest rip offs they offer. Reps force the product on consumers knowing that the product gets more complaints than any other they sell. I too tried the Essentials and every time I tried to get the certificates they offer they were always out of the store certs I tried to order. Not only that once you are enrolled and told you can cancel at anytime, GOOD LUCK. Once the fee hits your charge card you have to make several calls to try and cancel. Essentials hopes you just forget about it. Citi Bank is in a partnership with Essentials and they said they make big money off of it so they don't care if it works or not. Credit Protector is another one of their scams. If you loose your job try to use it. You better read all the fine print on any of the products Citi Bank offers. Every Citi rep has to reach a certain sales quota on every product or they are put on an accountability plan and then terminated. They fire more employees for not selling enough products than any other reason. Its funny that you are suppose to be a customer service rep or so the customer thinks so when they call in about their credit card accout. What they don't know is when your account comes up so does a list of product you have to try to sell them before you resolve whatever issues they called in about. Most of the time customers will take the trial offer to get off the phone and then they get their bill and they ar furious. We got more irate customers about the Essentials program than any other. It's sneaky how they sell it as a trial offer. And they don't tell you that the list of stores that you might be able to use it at is always changing. Also they do not make it clear that you have to call Essentials direct and have $20 cards mailed to you so you can go to the store to use them if they are accepted in your area. Reps do not explain the product in full detail on purpose. The best advice is cancel your credit card. Beware of any credit card companys they all have the same scams but Citi Bank is just a little better at it. Maybe thats why they are the biggest!
