I googled Free Annual Credit Report and was directed, apparently, to Experian, one of the 3 agencies which provide credit reports. It has been over one year since my last free credit report.  Experian charged me $31.95 for my FREE report, and enrolled me in their membership.  8 days later, my bank account was charged a $17.95 fee for this bogus membership.

I IMMEDIATELY contacted their customer service number but was told that this second fee would not be reversed. When I attempted to cancel the membership, the female CSR continued with a hard-sell for membership at a reduced rate.  Question: Why do they charge $17.95 for membership when they are ultimately willing to cut that fee in half?

I paid over $50.00 for a FREE annual credit report.  I have no idea how I would be able to get my money returned.  This is a sham and a SCAM.  WATCHOUT people !!!

Free report.

" I googled Free Annual Credit Report and was directed, apparently, to Experian "

Google does not "direct" you anywhere.  It merely returns websites which match your search criteria.   It is up to the user to determine whether or not the website provides what they are looking for.

There is only one website where you can order your free annual credit report.  It is run by the three major credit bureaus and the site will submit your annual request to all three of them.   The site is :

https://www.annualcreditreport.com/cra/index.jsp

This site is fourth on the list when you Google "free annual credit report".  Coincidentally, right under it is the FTC page on the subject.  It clearly states : "AnnualCreditReport.com is the ONLY authorized source for the free annual credit".  Here's the full URL for the FTC page :

http://www.ftc.gov/bcp/edu/microsites/freereports/index.shtml

I think the real problem here is too much clicking and not enough reading.

When you go to the Experian website..

..or even click on the link the OP left...you will see this CLEARLY on the right side...

IMPORTANT INFORMATION
When you order your $1 Credit Report and free Score here, you will begin your 7-day trial membership in Experian Credit TrackerSM . If you don't cancel your membership within the 7-day trial period*, you will be billed $17.95 for each month that you continue your membership. You may cancel your trial membership anytime within the trial period without charge.

So all you needed to do if you just wanted the "free" credit report, was to cancel the so called "TrackerSM" within 7 days. You did not do this so yes of course you got a charge on day 8 and it was authourized by you no matter how you slice it. Which is why even your own bank will probably not want to help you. They do not claim to cover brain farts.

YOU voluntarily enrolled into this and authorized payment for this TrackerSM "service" when you submitted your account info.

Below is a screen shot of Experians homepage. HOW on EARTH did you miss this?

Why did you provide your billing information if you didn't expect to be billed for your free credit report?

Question

That's odd. Anyway, I have a question for you. Could you check with them about the last time you pull your credit report from them (the one before the previous one)? That may give you an idea why it is not free.
