FCNB Spiegel ripoff Scranton Pennsylvania

I had a Spiegels thru FCNB account back in the early 90's and paid the account off in 1995. All of a sudden in the summer of 2006 I am receiving collection notices from them thru a collection agency named-Northeast Credit & collections. I called their 800tn and they told me they had no info except a name and a reference number in their system about a debt request they say they received from FCNB. I was instructed to call FCNB and they have no record of any reference number from NCC or any reference from an account number that NCC received.

I then called the collection agency back and spoke with someone who told me that it may be a computer mistake and that "they understood about how hard it is to keep records on a payment that was more than 10yrs ago." This is still unresolved and I seem to be continually going back and forth. What if any suggestions are there to ensure that they do not put anything on my credit report and stop these people from harrassing me.

I don't have any receipts of payments since I only hold on to them for 5-7yrs per tax laws. Who would have a receipt from a bill from over 10yrs ago!?! Nothing has ever shown up on my report in all this time. Can they collect on a paid debt that is more than a decade old? Isn't that a crime?
