About 3 years ago the neighborhood around the store started to turn bad. My old customers left. Bad ones came in. I asked time and time again for more payroll. I was unloading 600 - 800 cartons a week by myself because I could not keep the sales floor covered. I was in the store 16 hours a week by myself. My shrinkage started to increase. I was robbed at gunpoint. All my hair fell out. Never missed work. I was told that Family Dollar Stores would install a camera system. This never happened. Not quite a year went past and I was robbed again at gunpoint. I was told again that Family Dollar Stores would install a camera system. This never happened. However, I did receive a plastic camera to mount above the checkout area. I had to climb the ladder every 7 hours to replace the batteries in it. I was told that all my shrinkage is internal. I replaced most of the employees. Still the store is getting worse and worse. I am still in the store by myself. I worked every Saturday and Sunday open to close because this was when most of the problems occurred. I received no help from any District Manager. Just "keep your eyes on things".
Last September, my District Manager "estimated" my shrinkage at $40.000. I was told that if the numbers don't hold I would be gone. The store is still getting worse. For 3 years I had all the high priced medicines under the checkout with shelf talkers on the counter. When I would receive my Weekly Exception Cycle Counts all medicines were accounted for. I was told to put the medicines back on the counter. Family Dollar Stores would order a special fixture for them to keep them up at the front. This never happened. All the medicines were gone in a week. When I would receive my Weekly Exception Counts anywhere between $60.00 - $100.00 per item were missing. It's all internal I was told. Two weeks before Labor Day I was watching a customer - he showed me a knife. Still by myself in the store.
I would travel back to the store on the nights that I would not close and watch. I would put money in the safe from my pocket to see if it would be there in the morning. I would put tape on the receiving door at the bottom to see if it would be opened after I left. I would draw pencil lines on the stockroom floor where the flex-roller wheels were at the receiving door to see if it was moved. I would place small pieces of wood outside behind the receiving door to see if the door was opened. I would have my friend call with my calling card (so it could not be traced) to ask if my District Manager was there - just to scare them if the employees were up to no good. I did everything I could think of and more. I did everything but run the store for the last 4 months. No help from anyone. None. Every 2 weeks my District Manager would come in and tell me how much more the inventory estimate was short.
My District Manager came to the store the second week in January and told me the shrinkage went up another $45,000. Still by myself in the store for 10 - 12 hours a week. Continuing to work around 60 hours a week, and still helping out in other stores.
My last day I told my District Manager what I did to try to prevent the losses. I told him that if Store #3155 had the DVD camera system, like every other store has in the Allentown/Bethlehem area, we would not be in this situation. Northing was done to help me stop the losses.

And people wonder WHY our economy is in the MESS that it is in?

POSTED: Monday, December 29, 2008Their loss prevention sounds like a joke.
I remember being the only Native American in an all Hispanic store and watching the customers shoplift everything but the one store security person was watching me and doing it so badly that she knocked over a display. All the shoplifters leave are empty packages. It didn't used to be that way. There was a young Hispanic guy and he whipped that store into shape and there was actually merchandise in those wrappers at one time. Either somebody there backstabbed him or he got tired and went elsewhere..
WHEN YOU HAVE MORE EMPTY PACKAGES THAN MERCHANDISE, THE STORE HAS A PROBLEM!
I have seen the crooks in upper management steal and steal and goof off and many of them got there because a family member or a friend got them the job -maybe to cover for their stealing....
WHAT HAPPENED TO OUR NATIONAL ECONOMY MIGHT BE THE DAY OF RECKONING FOR THE RETAIL BUSINESSES WHO ABUSE CONSCIENTIOUS EMPLOYEES!
WHO IS MINDING THE STORE IF THE EXECUTIVES ARE GOOFING OFF AND MAY BE INVOLVED IN THE STEALING?????
WHAT KIND OF COUNTRY HAVE WE BECOME WHEN YOU CAN NO LONGER TRUST AND RELY ON YOUR EMPLOYER TO DO THE RIGHT THING BY YOU.
NO MATTER WHAT THE BUSINESS, I KEEP READING AND HEARING THE SAME THING AND I HOPE THAT THOSE ULTIMATELY RESPONSIBLE FOR THIS EMPLOYEE ABUSE PAY!

Doesn't surprise me...

POSTED: Thursday, June 26, 2008The topper was when my Manager, Assistant Manager and myself were all physically attacked and the company did nothing...Oh, yea, they provided security guards for a set few hours a day after we fought tooth and nail for it. (And I mean set...like very predictable) Meanwhile, almost nothing was done to apprehend the guy who did it. Another store actually called us to tell us he had just *left* their store a week or so after the incident. They fired my Manager, using the high shrinkage numbers (which were not new at this store) as an excuse and the Assistant Manager and I quit because of fear and stress...
Do yourself a favor, if you are looking for a job avoid Family Dollar.

POSTED: Thursday, March 27, 2008When the DM's do a walk thru or breakdown with inventory, what you need to do even if you are still employed, DO A INCIDENT REPORT ON EVERY THEFT, EVERY HOLD UP EVERYTHING, what that does it goes to loss prevention, and home office, you probaly were a low shrink store, you are probaly leverl 5 store(which means bad area with bad shrink)It worked with me, even if a pack of chewing gum is stolen or a empty package, go and do a incident report, print it up and put it in the file. When they see that you are getting in a bad area, you will see the ball rolling, like the other employee suggested to, excellent thinking on her part!I have been there and done it.
Now on inventory, when automatics and spring stuff comes in, it will throw your inventory up in a roller coaster, (same with dollar general) closer it got to your inventory, it will increase.Like she said, log everything in, if you are leaving money in safe to see if anyone is taking it, Dont tell anyone at family dollar you are doing this, LP can get you for that. But, save all e-mails, you keep a copy of them, do like the other employee said, need any more info let us know

Some One has to be held accountable
AUTHOR: Woking Mother Of 5 - (U.S.A.)
SUBMITTED: Monday, March 24, 2008
POSTED: Monday, March 24, 2008Just make sure you are going by the book as much as possible. The DMs' are never held accountable, because we as managers put our trust in them to handle our issues and when they don't follow through and things go wrong we as Managers are held accountable. Its their word aginst ours. KEEP documentation and a journal. Tim I to was robbed on two occasions. I am off on a work related injury. When I went to my traing store it to was in unacceptable conditions. The store stories, were that previous managment had let people walk out with alot of merchandise.
Also speaking with the local police this had happen about 2 years earlier as well. The DM prior to my arrival at that store had done walk through with estimated lost at 25,000.( On a couple of occasions.) That DM moved to a new district and evantually I was offered a raise to stay at that store which was about 30 moiles from home. The store I was hired to manage was a 10 minute drive from home. The inventory loss was through the roof due to previous managment. I only had the store for about 4 months before the first inventory. I was also promised cameras in my store or panic alarm I never received them. Its a lossing battle. People need to take it to the next level if they are not being heard. If you are still employeed I would start now and if not I would still get corporate involved.
