We are a family owned business, just my wife and I. For years we used FedEx to ship our products to our customers. We had a daily pickup. We shipped about 50-120 packages per week through them. For a daily pickup, they charge about $11 per week.

They offer another service for those who don't ship very many packages. You have to call when you want them to come by and pick up packages. They charge an additional $3 per package pickup fee for on-call pickups. This is for people who only ship a couple of packages per week. Since we averaged about 75 packages per week the daily pickup is much cheaper.

FedEx turned off our daily pickup without our knowledge or consent. The driver wasn't notified either and kept coming daily. They did this for about two years before we caught it on our statement. They wound up charging us an additional $20,000 in per-package pickup fees. They claimed that there was an error with their system that accidentally switched our account.

We brought this to the attention of our FedEx representative. She said that FedEx is only liable for 6 months. This is their policy. We pushed back and she got FedEx to pay for 12 months. They would not pay for the full two years even though it was their mistake.

So FedEx made off with $10,000 of our money because we didn't catch it in time. It's like a thief who breaks into your house and steals something and gets away with it because he set his own statute of limitations.

Since then we've moved to UPS. We got better shipping rates and we are monitoring our weekly statement.

- Well isn't that a brilliant idea..to actually monitor your accounts.

It's like a thief who breaks into your house and steals something and gets away with it because he set his own statute of limitations.

- Well not exactly.  It would be like a thief who breaks into your house and let's say they steal your bed and TV.  Yet for over a year you sleep on the floor and listen to the radio before you decide to report it to the police.   Then when the cops get there you get mad at them because they can't catch the crook because it has been too long and there is no evidence left.

Yes for what ever reason there was an error where your account type got switched.  Had you caught it after 1 or 2 bills and they refused to refund it, you would have had a very valid complaint.  But there is a point and time when the responsibility lies on you.  The fact in this case is that you were not monitoring your account and did not notice an at least $1000 increase in your weekly bill.

You are very lucky that the refunded 6 months of charges.  Because if this was a credit card by law you only have 60 days to dispute a charge.  After 60 days the credit card company is under no obligation to investigate or do anything and you could be held responsible for the charge.  So perhaps you better start reviewing ALL of your accounts to make sure there is nothing else you missed.
