Do not ship FedEx Ground or FedEx Home Delivery if you are shipping an item that can be easily broken during shipment such as a custom built computer.

I recently shipped a custom computer from Minnesota to Washington state via FedEx Home delivery and when it arrived at the customers residence it would not start at all. When I shipped the computer it was in working order and packed very well. The problem was created by a handler who dropped the box during shipment. The computer case and the box it was contained in didn't substain any damage but the motherboard did. I was told by FedEx when I submitted a damage claim that if the box and computer case wasn't damaged that the claim would be denied and they weren't responsible for a damaged motherboard and the components on it.

I was also told by the person doing the inspection of the shipment that I over packed the custom-built computer with bubble wrap and styro-foam peanuts. He told me that I should have shipped the computer in one box by itself, instead of putting it in another box surrounded by bubble wrap and styro-foam peanuts.

I also found out that FedEx ground and FedEx Home delivery is not directly connected to FedEx air cargo. They contract that portion of the business out to the lowest bidder for FedEx ground shipments. Needless to say, the employees working for these contractors get paid substantially less in wages compared to regular FedEx fulltime employees. Therefore, they really don't care how your shipment arrives whether its working or not because they don't have to pay for it.

I will no longer be shipping computers via FedEx Ground or FedEx Home delivery.

#2 UPDATE Employee

I am a full time driver and not a contractor

AUTHOR: Mike - (U.S.A.)

First let me say. I am a pid full time driver for FEDEx, I am NOT a contractor. I have two nephews and one brother who are paid drivers, and not contractors for FEDEx! My cousin who is a runs a fortune 500 company hav\s been shipping with FEDEx ever since it was RPS. They ship over 5 million pieces with us a year, and he has told me " we only have about 100 damaged pieces a year. Wow! I am guessing someone got fired from FEDEX and wrote these misconceptions on here! I don't deliver damaged packages, if they are broken or opened, I hand them over to our QA Qaulity Assurance people. They open and check the products, if they are good, they get repackaged and then sent, if broken they contact the company! Ok now, I do know alot of drivers are contractors, and if a product gets on their truck damaged. well yes and if they deliver it, then they are charged for the damages. As far as the dock workers are concernered, at my terminal we have 72 trucks, and my loader does two trucks, they seem to have adequate loaders, and they seem happy. I have seen the same ones for the last 5 years, and seems they are hiring more! Yeah , I am not saying your stuff got dammaged during delivery......I have dropped one or two myself, but please, I have not perposly dropped a package, heck I dont want to pay for it! Then there is the competition, too, I wont say their names, but have heard their employees have been instructed to start these false letter writting capaigns, I just hope that is not true! But heck you can't believe everything you read or hear.....right???

FedEx Ground Ripoff

AUTHOR: Patrick - (U.S.A.)

I have always used FEDEX air with few problems. Selling many things on EBAY, I needed a good, inexpensive reliable shipper. DON"T USE FEDEX GROUND for this, though. First, they destroyed a $500 printer, being shipped *in it's original box w/ original styro*, . The printer arrived in pieces, and looked as if it had fallen from a height. The ink spilled all over the box. FEDEX then denied the claim, saying that it wasn't properly packed, and then claimed that the box was wet ...from ink. Sure there were big ink stains...as a result of THEIR DAMAGE! Outrageous!

Throughout this process FEDEX claims was hard to reach, unresponsive and completely unhelpful. No one seemed to know what was going on. There are many different departments involved, and they appear to have no organization between them. I cannot believe this is the same company that was so responsible and reliable ten years agol.

Second time I used FEDEX Ground, a $500 piece of office equipment arrived broken. I have sent in a claim on this, but have fear that this too will be denied, since it wasn't even in it's original packing. Seems to me that FEDEX will uses any excuse to deny a claim. People should be aware of this, since with FEDEX GROUND the odds are extremely high that your package will arrived broken and crushed.

So far FEDEX's destruction has been two for two, and the final insult is their denial of the insurance claim for damage to an item sent in the original manufacturer's box!!!! They avoid responsibility for their own lousy quality control, which is a complete deal breaker for me. I've had better luck with the USPS!

Sadly, FEDEX has turned into UPS. Yet another fat, careless, unreliable shipping company to be avoided at all costs. I have never had so many damaged packages nor such callous treatment. I feel very badly treated and want to scream, because this is so unfair. I am out $500 with no recourse to justice.

The Bottom Line
Avoid FEDEX ground except for a box of balloons, or maybe a ream of paper. Anything more fragile than that will get destroyed and delivered late, besides.

Fed Ex Ground Ripoff, several reasons why consumers packages are being damaged

AUTHOR: Patrick - (U.S.A.)

FedEx Ground - Insider's View

Jack of Texas (05/17/04):
I'm writing in response to the consumers that have complained about the services of FedEx Ground. I am a package handler that works at the Houston terminal and have worked at another FedEx Ground terminal that I wish not to name to try to keep my identity unknown.

There are several reasons why consumers packages are being damaged; I'll try to cover all them. First of all, wherever the customer might be sending or receiving their package(s) most likely would be considered outbound because it is going out of the local delivery area. Take it from me, outbound packages are treated like second-class citizens because no one in that terminal makes money off of those packages. No one except the one manager that is in charge of that truck that gets the outbound packages loaded into them.
Trust me when I say, the way that truck is loaded is extremely substandard and no person in charge seems to care. Why? Because it is the outbound trailer. That terminal doesn't take a financial loss if the package is returned because it is not in their delivery area.
Next, when the package does finally get to the area in which it is to be delivered, that is when it can take even more damage. When the packages are unloaded out of the trailers, they are sent down a conveyor belt to be loaded into the right delivery truck. Sounds simple, doesn't it? Well, it should be if FedEx Ground wasn't so money conscious.

You see, we package handlers are only part-time workers who are limited to less than 25 hours a week within a 5 day work week. With that in mind, the people in charge (who by the way get bonuses as long as they keep us under 25 hours) try very hard to make sure that we do not exceed 25 hours. So, packages come down the conveyor belt at an unbelievable and probably unsafe rate. On several occasions, every day, we have many packages just falling off of the conveyor. Many times, the packages are already damaged and open when they get to the package loader.

There are package handlers that toss packages as well. I will not make excuses for them, but I do understand why it happens and I'll try to make you understand too. Many package handlers are overworked. We do a conceivably 8-hour job in a 4-5 hour span. We don't get enough hours and are offered no benefits. We are often mistreated verbally and fired for personal reasons. I've seen people, including myself, have to load as many as 4-5 trucks while handling over 1,000 packages in that 4-5 hour span. We are often shorthanded and forced to do more work without any incentives at all.

Then there are the delivery drivers. You see, they are not FedEx Ground employees; they are contractors. The only incentive they have concerning a package is to deliver it. It doesn't matter if it gets signed for as long as it's dropped off. Once that happens, good luck to the customer if something is wrong. The tracking system is flawed because of all the places the package travels. The people in charge, bottom line, do not really care about anything but the delivery of the package. FedEx Ground deals with so much volume that if a few packages get damaged then they won't lose that much.

From my personal experience, FedEx Ground is a huge corporation built upon a system that only benefits the management, not the package handlers, contractors, or more importantly the customer.
