Fifth Third Bank may be way too big to treat their customers as people instead of numbers. They have refused to show sympathy or help us in a time of need.

I was injured at work and times and money are very tight. My wife works very hard and until I can return to work (2-4 weeks) we live on the bare minimum.

I realize banks have certain procedures for handling the deposits and debits to our accounts, but some compassion would be nice when looking into individual circumstances. We went out of town for 9 days making 2 deposits before we left. Fifth Third has a procedure of holding checks (this companys' check has been deposited 36 times in the past 3 years with no problems) for a certain number of days while bouncing checks until it clears. So, by the time we returned from our trip $962.00 in fees had accumulated.

I went to reason with a bank manager and she offered to help with $64 towards the fees. I tried to explain that the money was actually there before any purchases were made. She told me they had to make sure the check was good. I mentioned that over a week later we know for sure (as it has always been in the past) the check was good and couldn't you honor it now and reverse the unnecessary charges to my account. she said she was sorry, but there is nothing she could do.

I wonder when people will be treated as people and an occasional hand will be extended to help a fellow person in need. You ask for help and get a door closed in your face. Everyone needs help from time to time, whether it be money or just a shoulder to lean on. If we all turned away from those in need where would our race be. Is it heading that way with big businesses listening to the people less and less each day. We are all in this life together, souls reaching out for one another, please don't turn your back on people in need and when it is your turn we will be there for you.

To top everything off...

Since this is my personal bank, I could have chose to cash the check (as I have many times before - as long as you have an account with Fifth Third), but I didn't want to go out of town carrying $1500 around in my pocket. I don't see any difference, they will cash the check immediately, but if I deposit it they hold it until it clears. I don't understand?

I'm sorry that you were injured...

And I hope you get through it okay.

The problem as you described it is the bouncing checks. It would not have been possible for any checks to bounce if the funds were available before the checks were written.

It's stupid irresponsible people like you that make it worse for people that are really ripped off. I don't say this in contempt of you specifically but of all the people like you who don't take responsibility for anything. These banks are nothing charity and the money they lend to you have to be paid on time. It's one thing if these guys charge usury interest rates like the credit cards but the fees were stated and while you were lollygagging with your vacation the fees conveniently accumulated. Try and pay your bets on time and spend the money you absolutely positively know you have! It's not big business, it's the stupid rotten people who run some of these businesses and individual scammers!
