On Tuesday (11/27/07) I went online trying to find information about grant money. I know that it is possible to get money from the government and foundations but was unsure where to look for it. I found the website"www.uswebgrants.com" and out of curiosity filled out their questionnaire.

The next day (11/28/07) I got a call from one of their representatives, named Tony Krystal. He said that my file was in the hands of one of their attorneys who had assured him that I qualified for and would receive at least $5,000 in health grant money (red flag). In order to proceed further with my application I needed to pay a one time fee of $343.50 and that this was a discounted rate. Their normal fee is $494.00. He assured me that I could do this with either a credit card or post dated check. And that I could then apply for grants as often as I wanted to for years to come without ever having to pay any other fees.

I asked for some time to do some research and talk to my husband about it. I called back on Thursday (11/29/07) and asked him if they were a member of the Better Business Bureau and he assured me that they were members of the BBB in Delaware. That struck me as odd since the phone number he had called me from was an unlisted number based in New York (red flag).

I went online to the BBB website and looked the company up. They had a undesirable/unreliable or something like that rating with the BBB. According to the report they have had (at that time) 20 complaints filed in the last 12 months and 65 complaints filed against them in the last 3 years. There were 4 addresses listed but all were PO Boxes in NY (red flag). And according to the report the company is actually located in Canada.

I thought about dropping it at that point but was curious about what they would say if I confronted them with the report. So I called back this morning (11/30/07). Of course when I told Mr. Krystal about the report he asked me if they had lsited how many satisfied customers/clients they had and that they had a better than 94% success rate. Then he transferred me to another gentleman who tried to reassure me with statements to the effect that if the company was willing to be deceptive they could pay $500 a month to the BBB and have a spotless record and a sterling rating but they didn't want to deceive anyone and that the reason people complained about them was because the clients lied in their applications and that when that was found out they no longer qualified for the grants but because the work had in fact been done, they no longer qualified for a refund. Now technically that makes sense so I dropped that issue. Then he went on to state that they had offices in Delaware and Washington state but I can find no addresses for those offices. He did give me addresses for Champlain NY and Dear DE but neither of these addresses are listed with the BBB or on their website.

The gentleman then offered to e-mail a copy of the contract to me. I agreed. The contract states that the fees must be paid with a cashiers check or credit card only, no money orders or post dated checks. The contract states that the client is not guaranteed any amount of funds at all. And you are limited to applying once per year for grant assistance although you can apply for multiple grants at one time.

Needless to say this company will not be getting any money from me at all. I thought I would pass this along in case anyone else was curious like I was and comes across this group. I may be in dire financial straits and need money right now but I am not so desperate as to get stupid about it.

Dear Jenni,

First of all, I would like to apologize, on behalf of uswebgrants.com, for you unpleasant customer experience. I assure you that we will try our best to help you learn more about our service and how can we help you.

Please Note!
uswebgrant.com, FPC, Financial Procurement Center is a separate entity from grants Pro. FPC has nothing to do with grants pro whatsoever, it's true we happen to share the same address but each company has a different owner.
FPC is incorporated in the state of Delaware. We have several call centers around the US and Canada.

I read your complaint, and it seems that Mr. Tony Krystal didn't have a chance to explain our service correctly.

Once you complete the first application online at our website, we will run a quick test on your file to determine if you are eligible to receive any type of assistance/Loan or any sort of a grant.
Once this is established, your file will be handed to a Phone representative who will take the time to explain to you the complete service, or at least should!

Since this wasn't done correctly, I'll take the time to explain our service again.
I already mentioned the first step in our service, after that you are supposed to complete the payment.

Once your payment clears, we will send you another form by mail. This form is a 16 page questionnaire that we require you to complete and send back to us.
This form will be forwarded to a law firm which will take the time to study your situation and accordingly will build a benefits report customized for you.
Your benefits report is a listing of all the agencies that are willing to offer you, provided you meet their requirement, some sort of financial assistance / Loan or a grant.
This report is what our service is all about.

Like you mentioned before, it is possible to get money from the government and foundations but was unsure where to look for it, grants are out there, and open for any one to apply.

The first problem is you need to know where to look for them. There are other services online that are willing to give you access to a huge listing of grants for a monthly fee. You can also access the complete database of government grants at www.grants.gov directly from the government.

The second problem, is finding the listing that you can apply for. It's not impossible, but it's very time consuming and might be difficult if you lack the correct experience.
We will do that for you by building your benefits report and that's why we charge our fee.
Once you receive your benefits report, it's up to you to start applying to the agencies. Although we don't offer our customers any help during this step, many contacted us for further assistance and we tried our best to answer any questions we could.

In some cases the customer would apply to the agencies provided in the benefits report yet won't be able to receive any assistance more than $5000. In such cases we ask the customer to provide three denial letters as a proof that they did their part. Then we complete a review of the questionnaire that the customer completed. If everything was filled correctly from the customer's part, and we received copies of the denial letters we will issue a complete refund since our benefits report was of no use to this customer particular case. That's what the $5000 is all about.

One last note about our phone numbers,
Most of our call centers are operated with VoIP phone systems, that's why our phone numbers might not correspond to the actual physical location of the Phone representative. You will always be able to reach us using our customer service number which is listed on out website.

Regarding the payment, you may choose the method that satisfies you the most. You can also use a draft check, this way your bank will be able to trace your payment to our company. And you won't have to sign our contract. The paper contract is used only when you choose to make a payment with a check or money order. It's meant for your protection and ours as well.

In any case you and the agent will have to complete a verbal contract recording that will have to pass quality control to ensure that you were not misled in anyway. The verbal contract only confirms that you agree to authorize the payment and you that you are in charge of your own finances. It also mentions that you were not offered anything else other than what I described above.

P.S. You mentioned that you may be in dire financial straits. This means that our service might not be good for you after all. The process of applying for a grant is a long process and it might take up to a year to receive any assistance from any agency, even longer when your application is complicated. You might want to consider our service later on down the road.

Our service is most suitable if you have a business idea and you would like to bring it alive, we will try our best to find you the funding you might need to start such a thing. The better your business idea for the economy, the easier it becomes to be granted the funding that u need to implement it. Of course, there are many other situations where you may easily qualify as well.

I hope I have answered all your questions and any doubts.
If I left anything out, I'll be happy to answer any other concerns.

George, I am sorry if I offended you but in fact your response proved one of my points. You are an employee of this company but you are in Canada not the USA. I asked the employee that I spoke with for the company's BBB information so that I could make sure that I was getting accurate information. I never doubted or disputed whether the contract was written by an attorney. Having read the contract, I have no doubt that a lawyer wrote it. It protects the company every which way from Sunday. All I stated with regards to the contract was that the representatives that I spoke with made statements that contradicted the contract. The contract states that you can apply once per year for up to 10 grants at that time, yet the representatives I spoke with said that you could apply as often as you like for as many grants as you like. The contracts states that you are not guaranteed any money yet the representatives stated that I had already been approved for a health care grant of at least $5,000. The contract states that the fees must be paid by money order or cashier's check only, yet the representatives I spoke with both stated that I could do a post dated check for up to a month ahead of time. None of this is my opinion or me "speaking from my behind". It is simply the facts of the case and my interaction with this company.
