I was a Fuel Delivery Driver for Florida Rock & Tank Lines. Manager Brian Shaw and Dispatcher Leslie was very unprofessional with communicating and this company practices unfair labor. Doing emergency hours at this company the telephone was not being answered by Leslie the dispatcher or any other dispatcher. Mr Shaw the manager showed signed of anger and negetativity with doing business. He used under-handed tactics to cover his errors along with the lost of accounts.

I personally believed that Brian Shaw has something against me when, I contacted Florida Rock division in Jacksonville, Fl to asked them if it was ok to returned their truck back to the Ocoee terminal due to a violent shooting that took place with their head mechanic who was shooting up the place. I did not want to walk into a hostile enviroment and that is why I contacted them. Mr Shaw, Leslie and whoever probably did not want the main terminal to find out about this incident.

Now I am face with not being hired at other fuel companies because of the lies they tell them when they call. I had a few companies call me back and told me that Florida Rock & Tank Lines said alot of thing which are not true. I have one that was recorded. Not only does this company practice unfair labor but also discrimination practices against minorities.

It's DAC not DAK and to the lady who wants to work there...

AUTHOR: Newinpensacola - (U.S.A.)

sgtjoebear it's called a DAC report not DAK. And to the lady that is wondering if they hire female drivers and why they are not responding to your application, it's called lazy management. The people there that call the shots have no clue how to manage a trucking company. They sit at their desks all day hoping and praying that they can make it through the day without an accident claim. If you are desparate for a job you are going to have to annoy the hell out of Mr. Willie "I won't get off my dead ass" Addison to do his job as a recruiter. It took me 6 weeks of calling him to get a job there. He is always "mysteriously" out of the office and claiming that he is very busy. That is the reason that he gives potential employees for not returning phone calls.

If I were you I would think about employment elsewhere. If you like being told how to do your job by a dozen lazy asses that have never driven a truck before let alone hauled hazmat it might be your cup of tea. I forgot to mention that the pay sucks too. They cut the driver minimum pay about 6 months ago to $400 a week. You will work 14 hours a day and slip seat with another driver too. Their equipment is garbage as well unless you get to share a truck with a guy that has been there for a decade or longer. They are the only drivers that have nice trucks. Try Kenan or Penn Tank Lines before you go to work for that gang of retards.

AUTHOR: Sgtjoebear - (U.S.A.)

to steven when a driver fills out an app he has no choice but to list ALL his driving jobs because of a specail record that is attached to each truck driver with a CDL called DAK report it contains the complete history of the drivers jobs as a commercail driver.

Answer to Does Florida Rock hire female drivers

AUTHOR: Mark C. - (U.S.A.)

Yes mam they do hire female drivers. I worked for them in Athens GA for A short time. Main Office was in Dorraville GA. There were 3 female drivers in that terminal . Hard working professionals. Wish I could say the same for the management. Be Careful with this company if you get hired .It was a mistake for me to work for them.

Does Florida Rock Hire Female Drivers?

AUTHOR: Mc - (U.S.A.)

I have applied for a position as a driver at Florida Rock and It has been 2 Months! I have done everything they asked me to...TWIC badge, Port badge, had Hazmat already 10 years exp and perfect driving record. I was told before I applied that they didn't hire women by a driver at a truck stop but I dont want to believe that. Could this be true? Is this the hold up? Does it take 2 months after you fill out an application and sign forms to release your DAC for them to call you back? If there are any people who work there or have worked there who know if this is true or not please let me know so I can move on and try to get a job somewhere else! Thanks

Yep! They f*****d me too!

AUTHOR: Newinpensacola - (U.S.A.)

If you look up several posts prior to this one you'll see that I've expressed my opinion about this company before. Well, a few weeks ago I was fired by these dumbasses for something that I wasn't guilty of. The worst part about it was that my manager, Ted, didn't even stick up for me when they accused me of performing what is known as a 'cross drop'. They said that I somehow dumped about 200 gallons of 93 octane into the 87 octane tank. Now that isn't half as bad as the f-up that happened several days prior to this when another driver of ours (Brandon) contaminated 8,400 gallons of diesel when he dropped gas into the diesel tank at the Circle K store in Semmes, AL on Lott road. Granted the kid worked there longer than me but when I told them that I didn't perform said 'crossdrop' my manager actually told me that they actually couldn't prove that it was me that screwed up since it was one of our busiest stores that receives several deliveries on the weekend when it supposedly happened. It has been nearly 8 weeks now and still can't find a decent job in the area. Oh and like the other poster stated, they did cut the minimum pay in my area too....by $1,000 a month! None of the managers took a cut in pay though. Ted, the manager for the Pensacola terminal, shows up and sits in his office for about 4 hours a day, so why would anyone in their right mind cut the pay of such a work-a-holic?
This company makes an incredible amount of money every day being run by morons such as him. Can you possibly imagine how much more they could make if they actually hired some people who didn't spend their work day with their heads stuck up their asses? All I have to say is what goes around comes around.

Rip Off Worst Company Yet!

AUTHOR: Cgood - (U.S.A.)

I worked for FL Rock for almost a year (3 weeks shy) yep that is how long it takes for your bonus, vacation pay ect. Not only did they layoff 8 of us after not working us for a week. They also retroactively changed our pay guarantee from $700 a week to $300. They knew for a month they were going to layoff. So not only did they not give us some warning they also let us sit home a week thinking we were getting pay. If you want to work for a company that does not care if you are a good employee or driver but how long you have been there. (If you have been there long enough they do not care how bad you are) They also only random drug test new people, not people who have been there for years. (and yeah they are the ones who need to be). If you are looking for a job look elsewhere.

Willie the "know-it-all" Addison

AUTHOR: Newinpensacola - (U.S.A.)

In reference to the recruiter in Jacksonville named Willie you are correct in saying that he is totally in the dark when it comes to determining whether or not someone is qualified for a job there. I have been at this company for a few months and it took slow poke Willie Addison about 4 weeks to get his sh1t together and call me back after filling out an online application. The problem with this company is that it is very top heavy...meaning that there are way too many managers on the payroll that don't know the first thing about trucking.

My favorite is a guy by the name of Doug. Doug is in charge of safety at this company and believe it or not, ol' Doug doesn't know the first thing about driving a truck let alone delivering 9,000 gallons of gas with one. He has been the safety guy there for over 13 years and started out there as a driver but only had to drive for a few months before getting his current position. I am amazed at how clueless the managers are here. The next guy that I want to point a finger at (my middle one) is the so called mechanic that we have at our terminal. This guy is on the verge of retirement so he does absolutely nothing all day but sit at his desk with his feet up staring at his computer. When he leaves for the day at 4:00 pm he looks cleaner than I do when I"m showing up to start my day as a night shift driver! He gets a company pick up truck to drive to work and home every day. I'm convinced that his real job is to see how long he can keep his feet up on top of his desk every day. T

hen there is the story of the terminal manager himself. This guy tells more trucking stories than anyone that I have ever met at any of the 100's of truckstops that I have frequented in my otr career. This man has never driven a tractor trailer in his life! His only experience in trucking has been driving a straight truck. As you can tell I can't stand this company and yes I am currently looking for a different job. The mani problem with this company is that it thinks that they make money off of having safety meeting after safety meeting. They need to realize that this is a trucking company.....not a safety company! Don't forget to tip your waitress....I'm gone!!!

attention florida rock driver applicants

AUTHOR: Anoymous - (U.S.A.)

i recently appied for a driver position at florida rock , what a total waste of my time !!!! for a month straight i ran around and obtained my hazmat\tanker endorsment, made copies of my drivers license,( background check) i spent alot of time and money did everything they asked for nothing. now i know what your thinking!! this guy must not have experience. to many tickets? i have a safe driving record, 20 years exp no drug problems or dui ever, clean background and solid work history. the reason they would not hire me according to willie.( recruiter florida rock) is because my most recent driving experience is driving a semi tow truck. he dosent see that as tractor trailer experience.

willie is by far the dumbest man on earth, he does not have a clue what heavy duty towing is. it takes more skill and knowledge to tow a semi truck and trailer than it does to drive a tractor trailer! if he had any common sense he would know that. florida rock advertises on all the job boards. so apply at your own risk! they are very unprofessional and will waste your time and money i hope this helps someone.

Actually Robert I remember now why I always thought of it as a law

AUTHOR: Steven - (U.S.A.)

The definition of what is the truth can take many turns when it comes to filing a complaint against a former employer for slander and/or libel.

Unless the OP did anything that was a felony such as theft or something and was fired for something like that then most companies will just provide info confirming employment and say whether or not the termination was voluntary (I.E. gave notice) or involuntary.

Most companies do this to protect themselves from "CIVIL" lawsuits brought about by former employees (sometimes they will put something in the employment contract as well stating that you will seek some form of mediation other than a lawsuit first).

In a perfect world people are evaluated by a person that is objective and is able to supervise them accordingly. But as everyone knows it is not a perfect world and people have biases.

Let's say Robert that you work for someone. That person tracks your every absence and every error you ever make on the job. That person councils you every step along the way documenting any problems that occur.

The only problem is that while this supervisor rides you from one day til the next he allows a favorite and/or a friend to call in sick and overlooks any problems in his performance. I'm sure you see this kind of activity on a daily basis. People either do this intentionally or subliminally (sorry its a fact of life).

Now comes the big day. You are fired. Reasons put down on your record state that you missed x amount of days over a 3 month time period and that while you were there you screwed up all these different projects.

Time goes by as you try to get a job. Since you listed this company as your previous employer they are contacted for references or background check.
As a result you are turned down for employment. You have access to reasons why you were rejected and find out it is because of this adverse information.

You call a buddy you worked with (either still employed by the company or someone that left because they didn't like working there). This person goes "well that sucks, everyone knows he rode over you cause he hated you and/or wanted a friend of his in the department so he got you fired".

Based on the above info you can pursue charges of slander and libel because what may or may not be true is now called into question. Any management competency is now called into question as well.

That is why companies watch what they say. Not so much a written law but just the fact that someone can sue for libel and win relatively easily if they want to fight it hard enough.

Thanks for the correction Robert

AUTHOR: Steven - (U.S.A.)

Should have said that if they are going to say adverse things about you then they should have it properly documented.

You see it is considered slanderous unless they have it documented that he was a problemed employee. So if it is the truth they need to have info in writing documenting it, also the info has to be viewed and signed by him acknowledging that he or she agrees or contests the info.

Some employers will have people seeking references contact an HR representative. That representative will usually only confirm employment and that the person left also maybe what they were making when they left. Depending on the company that person will have a script of answers they will provide.

Wrong Steven

AUTHOR: Robert - (U.S.A.)

There is no law in Florida, and no Federal one either, that prohibits a former employer from telling the truth about a former employee. Just because most will refuse to answer anything other than "yes he did work here", or "no he is not eligible for rehire", does not mean it is illegal to respond in more detail. As long as the truth is being told, the former employer is perfectly safe from litigation.

Thanx Steven For The Advice

AUTHOR: John - (U.S.A.)

Thanks Steven for the advice. The reason why I have this company on my resume is that with this company, I have put in three years as a Driver in which I need to get a fuel driver position. They can also look up your CDL license and find out what driving companies you had worked for. Most fuel driving jobs will not hire you unless you have three years or more experience as a driver. I have contacted the EEOC but they are just as terrible. I called them over 60 times and asked them when they will send me an application which never came. They will not see you without filling out a application and setting up an appointment first. Finally I got to speak with a supervisor who was very rude and kept cutting me off. She told me that there was nothing she could do. I contacted the BBB and they told me that they can't handle employment cases. I contacted a lawyer and they told me it would take about one year until my case goes into court. They charge me 500.00 just to speak to them for 30 minutes. They told me the all around court fee for them to represent me is 7500.00 in which is a bit too much since I am not working. I have moved here from NJ and since I been here everything is not what I picture it to be. Dac report has so many lies from this company on me it's pathetic.
What steps show I take next?

Thanks

What an employer can and cannot say

AUTHOR: Steven - (U.S.A.)

An employer may verify that you worked for the company. If they are asked if they would hire you again about all they can say is yes or no. Any info beyond this can be construed as slander and libel.

If you listed this company as a previous employer and they are saying negative things then you should pursue legal recourse against them (if they are made up lies or if they never documented any discipline problems). If you are saying that they gave a negative reports on you with the DAC you should be able to give them a statement to offer up yourside of any issues. I am sure some truckers could give you better info as that is just what I have noticed on other postings about trucking.

Now that being said. Maybe you can check the box saying they may not be contacted. You should probably give a reason why. Try not to personalize any issues like you did here. Most employers get a bad taste to see other employers trashed (even if they know they are a bad employer). Just say decided to seek opportunities elsewhere or something of that nature. Try giving any supervisors or coworkers that you got along with as references to counter act any info provided by the employer.

That recording doesn't do you much good unless you notified the party you were recording the conversation. Otherwise a judge won't even admit it as evidence.

Good luck,

They can't legally say anything bad about you...so if you have people on record and on tape saying they have...im not sure if you have the company themselves on record saying bad things about you...but none the less they cant legally say anything bad about you or they can be sued.

Also, why use them for reference if they talk bad about you??
