I wanted to file this rip-off report to warn people about a very popular site called Freelancer.com

This site is very popular because it has suceeded in getting many freelancers to sign-up and offer their services. Freelancer offers as a money conduit -- You pay them and then they -- say they will - pay the freelancer.

I believe Freelancer is a very very clever structure created by organized crime in Singapore.

Because Freelancer is not based in a developed country, they feel that they are above the law.

What they do is accept your first payment or two over the site to create a feeling of comfort. That is the most important step in their scam.

Then when you pay a larger amount they freeze your funds.  They say they need verifications. The fact that you paid in the past is forgotten.

First they say they just need a phone verification.  Then that is not enough, they need you to answer questions.

Then that is not enough -- they want you to take a picture of yourself with your ID. They say this is to prove your identity.  This requirement which no other site requests other then being a total invasion of privacy allows their ''rogue agents'' to steal your identity. Freelancer can then state that the information that they ''legimately'' required was stolen and distance themselves from the greater theft they are commiting.

If you don't go along with this scam they will try to hold on to your money.  They will say they can't refund it to you or pay the client. For some reason, they are able to charge your card and hold on the money but they don't feel ''comfortable'' paying the client even after multiple billing cycles have passed or refunding it to you.

If you are a victim of the Freelancer.com scam, contact your credit card company and request a CHARGEBACK. Dispute the payment on the basis of FRAUD.  You will receive your funds back and freelancer.com will be penalized.  Eventually VISA will limit their ability to accept payments. Also right the Singpore Embassy in your Country about this scam.

Hello Kevin,

Sounds like you have been into a situation where expectations were not properly set. And I regret that the security protocols has caused you differently from how it was intended. These security measures were in place to ascertain the interests of both parties.  I'm sure this could have been prevented if everything has been set up properly in the first place.

Let me help you out and settle what issue that you may have had.  I'd be happy to look into the details and discuss any that may have been missed, and resolve any open issues that you still have. You can reach me through email; eleanorl@freelancer.com.  I look forward to your email.
