A guy driving a beat up ten year old Geo Prism sideswiped my son while he was backing out of a parking space. My son wasn't even moving because he stopped the car when he saw this jerk coming at 35 mph in a 10 mph zone. The Geo had a streak of blue paint on it from swiping my son's car's bumper. The guy's wife, "who just happened to have a cell phone" called the police. Wondering why she did this, we sat in our car and waited. When the police arrived, the policewoman asked why we called the police since there wasn't any damage and nobody was hurt. We explained, that the jerk and his wife called the police. Then the police officer said that this was stupid, and she would handle it.

She took the insurance cards from everybody and wrote out a superficial report to make the guy happy. Only one problem: The police officer saw some beat up dents on this guy's car and marked them on the police report. She assumed that my son made the dents. On photographing the dents later that week, we noticed that the Geo had been in a serious accident where it was sideswiped knocking off the passenger mirror.

Geico called us and told us the accident was my son's fault and they were going to fix this guy's car. We told them that it was old damage from a prior accident. GUESS WHAT? They didn't give a damn. We have been telling them for three months now that the guy is ripping off the insurance company - and they still have never sent anybody to check it. Instead, they sent this jerk over to an estimator, who repaired the entire side of his car and chalked up $750 to our insurance police. Geico then cancelled our insurance policy - tripeling my son's rate with another carrier. Gee thanks Geico. And if that wasn't bad enough, while we were talking with them, they informed us that they paid another claim for $500 - without even notifying us about the claim a year ago.

We are suing this jerk in small claims court. We are doing the insurance company's job for them. We have to take the time to sue this jerk and prove to the judge that the damage was from a prior. If my son had dented his car, while it was completely stopped in its parking place, then the Geo Prism is unsafe and made out of tin foil. To make a dent in a Geo Prism, my son would have had to put his car in reverse and slam into the Geo going 25 miles per hour, causing the Geo to spin around in the parking lot. (The Geo never spun anywhere ) The police officer was so asleep at the switch, not only did she put down prior damage - she put down the wrong car. She put down another car that we own as the car in the accident. She didn't even look at our car. This is the report the insurance company based their claim on - the one that we told them in writing for three months, was wrong - and this jerk was getting money claiming fraudulent accident damages.

IF YOU HAVE GEICO INSURANCE, AND SOMEBODY FILES A CLAIM AGAINST YOU, THEY WILL PROBABLY NOT INVESTIGATE THE ACCIDENT. THEY DIDN'T EVEN TAKE PHOTOGRAPHS OR MAKE ANY EFFORT AT ALL TO EVEN LOOK AT THE VEHICLES. THEY JUST WRITE CHECKS AND CANCEL YOUR INSURANCE POLICY. I HAVE A LETTER FROM THE VICE PRESIDENT OF GEICO DIRECT TELLING ME, IN WRITING, THAT THEY DIDN'T INVESTIGATE THIS CLAIM AND THEY COULD NOT EVEN CONTACT THE OTHER DRIVER. SO, WHY DID THEY PAY HIM MONEY THEN? BEATS ME.

And as an added note: State Farm Insurance collaborated with them in the payment of the fraudulent claim, providing them with the police report. Geico didn't even get the police report on their own - they asked State Farm to do it for them.

The Editor Is Correct

AUTHOR: Ex-employee - (USA)

GEICO only cares about increasing its profitability each year, even if it means screwing customers and its own employees. Bonuses (profit sharing) is paid out every March where the employees net around $1500 (after taxes and mandatory distribution into 401k that is before tax), while the managers and executives get HUGE bonuses.

Geico is heartless

AUTHOR: John W - ()

I received a letter from Geico when celebrating mother's day with my siblings and mother. It said they were dropping my car insurance because of five incidents in the past three years. I been with this company for 15 years.

I do not understand why the company would just drop you like that. The last incident which was in April my car was side swiped. If that tipped the balance I guess you are not allowed to report every damage that happens to your car.

Hey, Insurance People !

AUTHOR: John - ()

Sorry, but even if Ed doesn't know as much about the industry as you, he knows it's a scam.

1). Most of us wouldn't have car insurance if it weren't required by law and/or auto finance companies.

2). The ones who don't have insurance (yeah, I know that's why OUR premiums are so high) don't care and drive anyway, with or without licenses, and just throw their citations into the circular file.

3). Insurance companies and ambulance-chasing lawyers go hand-in-hand (another reason why the premiums are so high).

Basically, consumers are the goose who lays the golden egg for insurance companies and lawyers. These vultures make and shape the laws, collect the money, and laugh all the way to the bank.

Ignorance Kills

AUTHOR: lisa - ()

This just goes to show how educated you really are. Seems like anyone these days can have their own website. It's a shame that someone who does not understand insurance feels like he can just spout off at the mouth and really believes that he is making sense. Any person with common sense can see that you have no evidence to validate your opinions. All you can do is spew arrogant comments that you cannot back up. I guess that's why you're not REALLY an editor, just another windbag (with a website) that craves attention. They have medication for that, you know. Or, are the doctors also blood-sucking leeches who are out to drain you because they get paid for actually going to school and saving your life?

A real profession *EDitor's Comment too

AUTHOR: lisa - ()

Perhaps, you, too, MR EDITOR, should also study up on insurance and the law. It's amazing how many people out there are ready to spout off at the mouth about something they obviously have no knowledge of. Perhaps, sir, you would prefer not to have insurance at all. Then, when you do get mangled in an accident, you can pay your own medical bills, and also for the repairs on your car. I KNOW that you don't make THAT much money. Insurance is all about the assessment of risk, and I have given reasonable explanations, as any agent will tell you, of this woman's issues. Perhaps you have an insurance license? Perhaps you know ALL about it? We are in the business of protecting people. There are plenty of people out there that appreciate what we do. It's a shame that I've come upon a forum in which the editor can't control himself from making biased comments on his own web page. Any REAL editor just presents the facts, and lets his or her writers duke it out. Shame on you.

EDitor's Comment to the above:
You ARE in the business of screwing people. There is not too much difference between Insurance Sales people and a car salesman/woman. You are percentage driven, sucking the hard earned blood money out of consumers.

Your Problem

AUTHOR: lisa - ()

First of all, if your son was pulling out of a parking space, he should not just let his car sit there halfway out when he sees someone coming along. With any state, just like a rear end accident, this is considered an at-fault loss. The person driving through the parking lot, regardless of speed, has the right of way. It was your son's responsibility to make sure that no one was coming. Second, you should have gone after the police officer for filing an erroneous report. Every company bases it's decision partially from the information on the police report. Think about it. GEICO wasn't at the scene, but, an officer came out and recorded what she saw. Are we to trust what YOU say, or the officer? It was your responsibility to call the police department and correct it. Third, we ALWAYS investigate our claims thoroughly. We are known for settling our claims quickly and fairly. Also, it is not the insurance company's duty to tell you that they paid out on a claim. Obviously, you knew that you had an accident. No insurance company will call you and say, "Hey, Jane. just called to let you know that we paid that guy you hit in the parking lot $1,000.00." What good would it do? It would just make you angry. Apparently, there were other factors leading us to cancel your policy. I can see this just from the fact that we had to pay out on another claim. Finally, you don't know that we did or did not get the police report ourselves. State Farm may have sent us a copy, but , that would be just to compare with what we may have received. So, next time you go berating reputable companies, perhaps you should brush up on your knowledge of the law. You should also educate yourself on the way that insurance works. Better luck next time.

EDitor's Comment:

Get real! The insurance "fat cats" have it all wrong and try to escalate these disinformation campaigns. That is how they make money. The Rip-off Report supports victims, and none more deserving than those victims of some of the most corrupt industries in America. ED Magedson EDitor-in-Chief
