My friend and I were stopping at the bank to cash a couple checks near closing time, and two guys in a black Ford Explorer SUV pulled up and yelled out the window, "HEY YOU GUYS WANT A HOME THEATER SPEAKER SYSTEM FOR CHEAP?!?!" So he came over and talked to us for a little bit, introduced himself as Edgar, while his friend, the driver, remained in the car. I noticed they both were wearing polos with some audio installing company name on them and claimed they were "installers." He opened the back of the SUV up and there were what looked like as many as 10 boxes of speaker equipment in them. He then showed us a magazine with the speaker systems in it, claiming they were MSRP $2500 each. Sure enough, he showed us the boxes, and there were bar codes and prices, claiming $2249.00 each. He gave us two and said "will you be fair with us? Maybe $800?" So we got $400 out at the bank and then went to Walmart with the guy (while the other followed us in the SUV) to get the remaining $400 in money orders.
They claimed they were "going out tonight, to Christie's", which is a strip joint in Cleveland. He gave us his "number" and invited us out with them. The guy that rode with us to Walmart told vivid stories about his job, the people that he worked with, and how he got "demoted" from installer to deliverer after him and his coworker dropped a TV during an installation. It all seemed legit and almost too good to be true, and we fell for it.
