I have been charged a $150 deposit now for requesting extensions on my bills. My power has never been cut off, I always pay my bills on the arranged days, and I always confirm with the customer service representative what fees or negative feedback will be placed on my account due to the requests. I have never been notified this was impending and when I contacted the company via email, they reported the following:

Thank you for contacting Georgia Power.

We apologize for the inconvenience. Unfortunately, based on the payment history on the account, we are unable to cancel the deposit.

Payment History

I have never been notified this was impending

- So are you saying that if they notified you that you wouldn't have made arrangements?  Because in the end being notified that you may be subject to deposits really doesn't matter.

The ONLY reason you should be requesting extensions or "arrangements" is if you are having trouble paying their bill, negative comments on your account should be the least of your concern.  Since you seem more concerned about the negative effects of requesting an extension that could lead one to believe that you could have paid your bills without one..that is if you really wanted to.

Now, because you have a history of extensions they probably feel that your chance of defaulting is greater, as a result they require a deposit.  This is NO different than any other utility would have required.

Indeed

AUTHOR: TruthSayer - (USA)

That is standard operating procedure with ALL utilities.  Your only recourse in this matter is to start paying your bills ON or BEFORE the due date.  Otherwise, you're going to be coming up against this for the rest of your life.

Not a ripoff.

AUTHOR: Flynrider - (USA)

Most utilities hold a deposit for customers who are either new, or haven't had a good record of paying their bills on time.   Multiple extension requests would lead me to believe you are in the latter category.    Your spotty payment history has now come back to haunt you.

Hard to call it a ripoff as just about every utility operates the same way.
