In September 2012 I had to cancel one of my credit cards because of a theft, at which point my credit card notified me of a reoccurring charge from Gold's Gym that had been going on since November 2011. Upon investigation of the charges, I found that Gold's Gym had bought out my previous health club and opened a membership for me without my knowledge, and proceeded to charge my credit card without my authorization... I had no way of knowing about the membership because no one from Gold's Gym or my previous health club (Penn Athletic) ever contacted me regarding the issue of this account and I had been out with a back injury during the time that my previous health club closed their doors (literally closed their doors)... and when I tried to reach anyone from the previous club to find out why they were no longer in business, was never able to contact anyone. Being that my previous club was no longer in existence, I naturally assumed that I no longer had a health club membership anywhere, and never gave it another thought. Unfortunately, about the same time I had my back injury, my credit card statements had gone paperless, and I moved to a new home and didn't have internet for close to 8 months after moving, so I had no way to check my credit card statements from home, and I rarely every used that particular card, but had an automatic payment set up out of my bank account to insure the account was paid every month... which is how the charges managed to go unnoticed by me until the theft that caused me to close my credit cards down. Basically, when I contacted them to clear up the matter, I was told they would cancel my membership from the day I called forward, but that they couldn't give me a refund because I took too long to ask for one. I have called several times, but they still refused the refund, so I filed a fraud claim with my credit card company @ which point Gold's refunded me for 1/2 of the money. I sent another recent letter pointing out that I never authorized the membership to begin with, and that I never used the membership, because I never knew about the membership... and that 1/2 of a refund must be an admission of some guilt on their part and request the rest of the refund they owed me, however to this date I have heard nothing... leaving me in the position of deciding if I need to take them to court over the remaining amount. Meanwhile, I have recently received a collection letter from them stating that I owe them over $80 for membership dues... the membership they were supposed to have canceled. From what I've read on the internet they milk people for as much money as they can get and refuse to give the money back ... probably hoping people will give up and go away, leaving them with the profit from their immoral ventures. I hope someone will do something about these horrible leaches some day, it's ridiculous that I should have to be stuck paying hundreds of dollars on my high interest rate credit card just because they got away with ripping me off ... with no services in return. what a bunch of horrible people.
