The following paragraphs written below are not nescasarily to attack Gratitude House and It's staff but rather to provide some insight into what in actuality takes place in this so called "sober living" enviornment. As well as to provide individuals as well as families of loved ones recovering from drug and alcohol addiction a accurate depiction of what their hard earned money will go to in regards to the "aftercare and transitional living enviorment" Gratitude House provides.

I first came into contact with Gratitude House while rounding out a 90 day stint in a inpatient rehab, my couselor had suggested that sober living was most likely the best route to go rather than returning me to the enviornment that contributed to me being in rehab in the first place. Having spoke with Derek Atkins the "clinical director" as well as owner of Gratitude House my family and I elected to have this sober living enviornment be the next step on my road to recovery. During my first few months my family and I were very pleased with Derek and his sober home, I had gotten a sponsor, job and was provided couseling atleast once a week as well as group couseling multiple times a week and felt very confident that myself as well as my family had made a good choice to for me to come to gratitude house. However soon thereafter my mindset began to change. The weekly individual meetings and group couseling soon came to a screaching halt due to the fact (This was not brought to my attention until weeks after coseling stopped) that Mr.Atkins received a call from a state run agency inquiring about his couseling reason being for this is he had failed to register his transitional living home with the state thus legally could not practice any kind of couseling or therapy in his home. When I asked Mr.Atkins about that his response was "I'm not paying the state a dime" (the reason I share this is it had relavence in regards to the priorities Mr.Atkins and his wife displayed later on in my stay). I also want to point out any legitimate business would have a besiness license as well as a state deemed level of maximum ocuppancy. (to be more "cost effective" Mr.Atkins puts anywhere from 2-4 residents in bedrooms intented for one individual)

Furthermore I began to notice a trend with other residents and their families in regards to the "needed duration of stay". I will say it's obvious Mr.Atkins has been in this business quite some time his ability to manipulate and be subtly dishonest while maintaining relationships with individuals is astounding it reminds me much of myself when I was using and drinking. Mr.Atkins would build great rapore with ones parents or more accurately whomever was paying the bill and when the time came when a individual felt he had saturated the posotives of his home and decided it was time to move on he would insist to the person paying the bill they were not ready and 90% of the time the parent or guardian would listen. And why should'nt they they're trusting a substance abuse proffessional who seems completely on the up and up but the sad truth is it is much like the cliche "once labeled crazy or a liar the more you try to plead and profess your stability the more guilty you look no matter how true". Needless to say it seems somewhat apparent one of the if not the top priority of Gratitude House is money and it should be your running a business but when desires for financial gain override the responsibilty and duty entrusted to you by individuals and families recovering from substance abuse thats when we have a serious issue. The desire for financial gain was apparent on other occasions such as groceries now keep in mind the rent for one to live here is $3000 a month, part of the services provided is obviously food for the residents to eat however on multiple occasions the contents of the refrigerator were slim to none and when confronted about this Mr. and Mrs.Atkins response was "impress me maybe you'll get some food" now call me crazy but for $3000 a month I should not feel obligated to impress the owner of a less than mediocre halfway house in order to be fed this is'nt Oliver Twist here.

Also something I would like to point out in the time I spent at Gratitude House the "staff positions" were like a revolving door. But before I get to that let me explain there are currently 2 homes Mr.Atkins runs and for each home there is what is called a house manger these individuals are responible for seeing that things go smoothly at the house performing drug tests on clients and reporting back to Mr.Atkins each night each residents day. So during my year at gratitude house I saw 8 house managers come and go. Mostly due to being unable to tolerate the bizarre and unprofessional practices of Mr. and Mrs.Atkins. Also one of the HM named Scott xxxxxxx on a almost nightly basis would return drunk to the home and had wrecked his vehicle 3 times during his time there and would keep McCormicks Vodka in his room. What a great rolemodel for a bunch of addicts and alcoholics and it was only when clients began reporting this behavior to their parents did Mr.Atkins ask him to leave due to the fact they needed that position filled so badly.

I could continue however I feel i've painted a clear picture as to what the reality of gratitude house is.

In Sum:Overpriced, illegally run sober home with no structure and very little actual recovery going on run by owners primarily driven by financial gain.

Original Report Untrue

AUTHOR: IAR - ()

I am writing the following pragraphs to clarify and attempt to repair any damage I might have caused by writing the past post. They were written out of anger and paranoia following a diagreement with Mr.Atkins. I am going to provide you with the unbiased reality of what gratitude house is and how I came to be a resident. I did orgianlly meet Derek immediately after a stay in a inpatient rehab. However in the past post a failed to mention that at the time I had just turned 16 and my assigned counselor at this rehab felt my family and I should explore the option of transitional sober living being. The difficulty with this however is that being 16 no adult sober living enviornment would consider taking me being that I was not a emancipated minor and had consequently been rejected from numerous homes. That is until I met Derek and after he was given the opportunty to see how much I genuinely wanted to change my life. So against the wishes of one of his staff members and his clients Mr.Atkins took me in. My first few weeks were exceptional I got a sponsor began 12 step work and even got a job. That is until the staff member who felt I should'nt be there and I got into a dispute. This staff member was unable to get passed our disagreements and Derek consequntially let him go, my reason for mentioning this is to provide a example of the numerous times Mr.Atkins has placed his clients before hs staff.

Also I want to clear up the issue behind being money driven. Numerous time has derek gone out of his way to buy things for the guys fights on pay per view, cigarrettes, gas money the list could go on. He also has allowed individuals to come and stay for less than he normal rate or even on scholarship for no other reason than they needed a bed and he had one.

I would also liketo share a few things that really speak to the character and moral compass of Mr.Atkins. As we who have been in or around the anals of drug addiction know relapse is a unfortunate part of recovery. And during my time with Gratitude House many residents did in fact relapse. Dereks first reaction however was not to kick someone to the curb and give up on them instead he would consequent them of course but did continue working with them so long as they still had the desire humble themselves and to be clean and sober. Even at times to my dismay (I had become somewhat of a self-righteous AA n**i) Derek would provide every opprtunity to his clients to turn things around before he would ask a individual to leave. Personally at the time I disagreed with his approach I felt it was enabling and soft. This I felt was most true with a resident by the name of Steve who had relapsed numerous times and in m opinion was a lost cause but where I would have shown my back Mr.Atkins showed mercy and grace. I recently heard through the grapevine that Steve just celebrated 90 days of sobriety something I don't believe would have been possible had Derek not showed him the kind of forgiveness and grace that he did. Forgiveness that I was so quick to not give but would soon need. I had just celebrated 18 months of sobreity but following some trials in my personal life relapsed and plumetted off my holier than thou' pedastle. I was unable to keep from using and forced Dereks hand to where he had to ask me to leave. But was allowed the opportunity to come back following a stay at a inpatient rehab. However the foundation on which my recovery had been built was firmly shaken by that relapse and was followed by more failed attempts at sobreity. I currently reside at Gratitude House and still Derek has not given up on me even though many a times I have on myself. This story is the same for most of the clients who have come and gone from Gratitude. Also worth mentionining are the services that are in fact provided by Mr.Atkins at his sober living enviornment. Such as a Physchiatrist who makes house calls, or assitence in job hunting even getting steaks on the grocery list things that seem insignificant but do play a role in providing the kind of enviorment to foster recovery.

Thrugh numerous trials Derek is a man who I have come to respect and admire and regret having smeared his name unjustafiably and in a way might danger the livlihood of a man who deserves so much more. So to anyone who has their doubts due to the last report please disregard and allow yourself the opportunity to see the kind of man Mr.Atkins is and the moral fiber that will become apparent to you after a few minutes with the man. So to those of you reading this considering Gratitude House as a option I would'nt recomend anyone else and wish you th best of luck in your recovery.
