My mortgage was unfortunately purchased in Oct 2009 by Green Tree. The approximate remaining balance was 7000. I did not notice it, but there was an additional amount under the heading "Corporate Advance Balance" in the amount of 13,400. I became aware of this today as I was about to pay off the balance and calling to verify the close out price and shocked when I heard 13k!
After calling customer service I was told that this was additional interest from the previous holder. I called the previous holder and they had no idea what Green Tree was talking about. I have perfect credit and have never missed or been late on a payment during the term of the loan - standard 30 yr fixed with no prepayment penalty.
When I called Green Tree again informing them of this they stated that I still had several years of interest to account for. Huh? Evidently I owe interest for a imaginary loan.
No one in customer service could provide anything in writing and I faxed a writen request for an itemized account of the 13k and where this originated from.
I have also contacted a mortgage attorney and numerous consumer activist shows and organizations including BBB.
Hope to report a resolution soon.

Conflicting information from Green Tree

Upon initially notifying Green Tree I was told a review should be complete within 3-5 days. Calling on 2/26 I was told my account was in review and would be completed within 7-10 days. When asked what the delay was they stated they were waiting on GMAC (initial holder of the lien). I contacted GMAC and they stated they were not aware of any activity or inquiries into my account other than those I had made. After calling on 3/2 I was informed the review will be complete within 30 days.
I contacted the WI DFI office registering a complaint, which was forwarded to Green Tree corporate offices on 2/24, allowing 15 days to provide documentation of the additional charges.
I have now notified news agencies in Minneapolis/St. Paul, finance magazines, consumer action agencies, my congressman, in addition to the applicable state and federal regulatory agencies. I also sent letters to the CEO and corporate offices notifying them of my situation and the unsatifactory customer service and aparent inability to contact anyone in authority.
