real bad help

AUTHOR: George - (U.S.A.)

so nick just finished my wife and I 2004 return and colleen did our 2005 & 2006 returns it was a good thing that I asked to sign our 2004 return, when colleen had us sign our 2005 thought it might make sense seeing how we were signing the 2005 return. The reason colleen did our 2005 & 2006 return was nick had an appointment I felt sorry for them (nick's customers) true story

#3 UPDATE Employee

Most of us are certified in one of about 7 different stages of tax preparation

AUTHOR: Scarlet - (U.S.A.)

In response to the person claiming "minimal training" at H&R Block: As a 6-yr seasonal tax preparer at Block, I can tell you that we DO have regular training to prepare taxes.

Most of us are certified in one of about 7 different stages of tax preparation, and we achieve this by taking a MINIMUM of 30 hrs continuing education PER YEAR, and this is AFTER successfully completing a basic course our first year that lasts 3 months, 2 nights a week!!!

At first, I balked at the idea of spending so much of my personal time (we are not paid for this training; it's voluntary) on taxes, training which begins in July and goes through the first half of December. But after taking these courses & having terrific in-class discussions & research problems, I can tell you that we all learn something new from every new seminar we take.

So don't talk about something you don't know about. We either have to take 24-30 hrs continuing education per year, or pass the extensive tax return preparation examination with at least a score of 80%, in order to get our part-time jobs back at tax time. I'm sorry some have had bad experiences, but by all means, try another office, or let the district manager in Chattanooga know the problems you've had. Then ASK you preparer, "How many years have you prepared taxes for Block? What kind of training do you have?" You'll be surprised, I'm sure.

And as for CPA's & accountants, we get lots of returns at our office prepared by CPA's and accountants that have mistakes in them, simply because they haven't had updates on tax laws like H&R Block provides their employees. And CPA's charge $300-$400 for the same thing we may charge $100 for. So we're a bargain when you look at it that way.

There was a person also saying that Block told them their relative didn't HAVE to file a tax return. Sometimes we may be too quick to answer a simple question like, "Does my father HAVE to file his taxes if he didn't make enough?" We should ask more questions. But honestly, it's not very common for an 80-yr old man to hold a job, so the person answering the question probably didn't think to ask if he had any taxes withheld from his checks. I'd also suggest that when asking a question like that, be sure to ask for a tax preparer to answer your question. Sometimes, a receptionist tries to be helpful, but they do not have training to answer tax questions.

H&R Block is the oldest tax preparation company in the country, and we have offices in lots of other countries too. I hope you take time to ask more questions at your local office. If you find that you've been seated at a new preparer's desk, you should feel comfortable asking for a more experienced person. They'll always accommodate your requests. It does take time to train new preparers and the only way they learn is like any other job: You have to get in there & get hands-on experience. But it's a good idea to train WITH an experience person for a while before going out on their own.

Thanks for listening,
Scarlet

#4 Consumer Suggestion

Why use a company that will hire anyone that walks in their door.

AUTHOR: Howard - (U.S.A.)

Using HR Block (heads) NEVER. Granted, I am sure that most of their employees try very hard to do what is right. But why use a company that gives their employees minimal training. If the IRS, Tax Attorneys, and CPA's do not fully understand the US Tax Code why trust a someone that may not even have a Accounting Degree. That does not make sense at all.

Example - My father-in-Law works one day a week. They company takes out taxes. HR states that he did not have to file because he is over 80. Wrong - if anyone who retires even if he earns less than minimum to file for taxes, if the company they work for takes any taxes out then in order to get the money back from the government must file a 1040. DUH. Of course, they never asked if the company he worked for took out any taxes to begin with.
