After working 30 years in the same industry I lost my job in March 2009. I thought the best thing was to go back to school. After talking to the admissions person at Heald college they had me convinced I would come out of the school with a great career making good money so, I joined.

During the 9 months of school all of the teachers would talk about how much money we would all make at the end. I graduated in April with Honors and found out at that time not only do they just send you listings from craigs list for jobs. But they also have certain students that they hold the good jobs for.

It was very disturbing to find out after paying 13 thousand dollars I would only be offered a job for 12 dollars an hour. I made that kind of money back in 1980. And if you don't accept the 12 dollar an hour job they stop helping you find work. I am not the only one in this situation their are 14 girls that I know of. We were all lied to in the beginning. The admissions personel said they take good care of their older students and it was all untrue.

Now we all have student loans coming due and none of us are working. You cannot live on 12 dollars an hour as a single parent. I did not spend 13 thousand dollars to make less money then I was making. I did however know I wouldn't make the same to start but not 12 dollars an hour.

Admissions said it would be around 35 thousand a year and they had great placement for when you graduate. Which was yet another untruth. Someone needs to put a stop to all the false information that this school is spilling out on the older generation who have lost there jobs and are despirit to find work.

The Facts

AUTHOR: Rahul - (U.S.A.)

I graduated from Heald back in 2003. It took me a while to find a job, but I did find one. Back in 03 Heald was non profit. In my experience it was better than state university and community college. Heald is regionally accredited which is very cool. It is a respected degree by the WASC accreditation. No one can guarantee your future job or pay. Wages, jobs are built by experience. Compare Heald with other trade schools, Heald is still better.

shoulda done your homework

AUTHOR: idontknow - (USA)

and research a bit more online. if it sounds too good to be true, then it probably is. i guess the other option is to go back on welfare (been there, done that ~ so don't think I don't know what I'm saying). I raised my kids ALONE on a lot less than that not too long ago. You're in Roseville, for G*d's sake, there are plenty of resources there. $12 a hour is a lot!!!

Heald's Lifetime Job Placement

AUTHOR: chic - (United States of America)

I have a very similar complaint about Heald College in Portland, OR. I felt that I was heavily "courted" by Heald College in the fall/winter of 2004-05. After research and meeting with administrators of this campus, I felt they understood my concerns about updating my marketable skills. They led me to believe that they would be an ally with their "lifetime job placement".

I was deceived. As a graduate of 2007, I remain unemployed with a big student loan debt. In the three years since I have graduated I have recieved 5 actual, direct leads for employment. All others have been, as you comment, job postings found on the internet. They employ deceptive practices and they still advertise lifetime job placement, but they now call it job pacement assistance. I'm sure some legal, technical wording. I've looked up the words job and placement and they do not mean give me some info from the internet.

What is also disturbing to me is that Heald College was a nonprofit school when I enrolled. That is one of the reasons I chose Heald as opposed to Everest or Apollo and others. In 2010 they were bought by Corinthian College, a large for profit college with locations nationwide.

It was difficult enough to find a job with Heald as a nonprofit---I don't believe it will improve now that it is a for profit. I agree with this report and I do feel that these schools should be held accountable. They spent more time and energy getting me in their door but once out that door, I don't believe their stockholders much care about me getting a job---it's about the almighty dollar.

Heald College keeps it's name even though it is owned by Corinthian College. This could be due to Corinthian College's nefarious reputation---investigated by the state of California---Corinthian settled for 6.5 million dollars, as well as many, many lawsuits for their deceptive/fraudulent practices. I find it disingenous that Corinthian is not proud enough of its name to use it. Corinthian is riding on the "good" reputation of Heald. I doubt that Heald will have such a "good" reputation in 5-10 years. Heald has not been able to find empoyment for me in three years but it now has 1,000 students enrolled at the Portland campus. Corinthian takes federal student loan dollars and profits. Hope all these students "profit" from Corinthian's stellar "job placement".
