I booked a mid-size car online at 2PM on 11/9/2012 and scheduled pick-up for 6PM on 11/9/2012 from Hertz in Woburn, MA.  I arrived to pick up the rental at 5:55PM on 11/9 and was told that they had sold out of cars.  They gave me the card for a Taxi service and said there was nothing they could do for me.  I promptly began to look for alternate transportation but there were no cars, trains or other means available as everything was in the process of closing and the next train wasn't scheduled until the following day.  I ended up paying a car service $390 for a one way trip and then another $137 to rent a car from Enterprise to come back one way from my destination in CT.

No offense, but where exactly is the ripoff? In order for there to be a ripoff, there MUST BE SOME SORT OF SCAM. Being out of cars happens more often than you would think. Hertz (or any car company for that matter) relies on customers to return cars at the time that they said that they would. If customers do not return on time, then they run out of cars.

For example, say that there is a business convention in town and Hertz has 300 rentals out. Now lets say that the convention was supposed to be over Wednesday at 4 PM but it goes a day longer. Now Hertz is 300 cars short on cars for Thursday. Customers showing up on Thursday will have to be turned away. Unfortunate for you, yes, but far from a ripoff.
