Home Depot sells a Ryobi Model BC30 that is made expressly for them. The full Model No. is RY30004D.

In just over one season of household use, the design of the product is such that the heat of the engine caused the fuel tank to melt through.

This problem has made the string trimmer inoperable.

Ryobi Customer Service would not supply a replacement fuel tank directly to the customer. Even if the fuel tank was replaced it would not be a safe tool to use.

Home Depot and Ryobi should recall all of these trimmers and refund the purchase price or replace them with models that are safe to use.

Well, it was a flaw. Reporter was correct

AUTHOR: markthink - (United States of America)

With years of engineering experience between the reporter and self this was not a "flaw in the one production tank" response. Give credit where due: one must not assume the writer knows not. With but one letter and one cc, the retailer responded. In fact, many BC30 units (as did mine) failed of the same cause, fuel tank rupture. After a photo session by manufucturer and outside agency (the "cc party"), these early units were QUICKLY replaced; many via delivery to the home. And we note: the replacement and ALL further units sold presented completely safe redesigned heat shielding. Pennies per piece for the manufacturer, safety for all. I will gladly pay $5.00 more for $0.90 in parts if it means being safe. Retailer was lucky on this one, any given person could have gone up in flames or spread killer pollution.

Any and all warranty work

AUTHOR: John - (U.S.A.)

must be done by an approved shop. They need a shop to decide why exactly the tank allegedly melted. It could be something as simple as that particular tank on that particular machine had a molding defect and not this alleged design flaw that you think exists. This is one reason why the consumer does not get parts just sent to them. The shop then files a warranty and if there is a pattern of a problem (eg: them and many other shops repair the same issue on multiple machines), then it is addressed. However, one isolated incident does not make all the units dangerous. That baseless allegation is ludicrous.
