A 2 year home warranty was given by Freddie Mac as a selling stimulus when we purchased our house in April 2011. We felt relieved that we would have this insurance to cover the untried existing HAVAC system, plus the electrical, and plumbing systems in this older home... We were assured that if any problems with these systems came up after we purchased the house that it would be taken care of by the home warrenty. Big selling feature!! Big Mistake!
One month (May 26th, 2011) after signing for the house, the outside unit on the HAVAC system blew up - smoking and clanging. We got our info together and notified www.homeprotect.org
and within a few days their qualified and certified serviceman drove 45 miles to tell us that our compresser had indeed gone bad. We were charged $100 for his initial visit (our deductable). A new compresser was ordered (1-2 weeks) and finally put in by the service rep. Another $75 was taken out of our pockets because the old compresser had to be disposed of by EPA standards (not a covered item). Our new compresser worked great for 3 days and then froze up.
Another 45 mile trip and the service represenative tells us he didn't add enough freon the last time...so, he adds more freon and it works great for 3 days and freezes up again. More phone calls back and forth between Home Protect and the service rep, and myself. Finally the man comes back down and looks at the unit and says we need a new condenser/coils. Ok, but the new part they (Home Protect) had sent him was the wrong one!!! More freon added and he leaves. AC works great for 3 days and freezes again. He also FYI us that it will cost us another $95 to dispose of the old compresser/coils by EPA Standards and this is not covered by Home Protect...
Home Protect then contacts us and gives us two options: 1. Wait for the new condenser to be ordered, sent, and installed by their service rep within the next few weeks, or 2. We can get our usual repair person to install a new unit and they will "allow" a reimbursement of approx. $1200, but no more because we have now used up all our allowance ($5000)!! We chose option #1 because we felt it would now cost probably more to get someone else involved plus by this time, we were aware that it was a problem getting the reimbursement $ back from this company.
It is now August 13th and we still have not received our new compresser and I'm still not sure we will ever get what we need to actually fix our unit through this company. It has been a total waste! We were told that Home Protect had Ok'd the new unit and it was ready to be picked up Aug. 5th but the service rep says he was never notified by Home Protect of this fact. I don't beleive either one of them at this time.
I would NEVER purchase this type of insurance and especially from Home Protect...it is just one huge scam, and I'm using very mild terms for this company and their "qualified" service reps. Each one of them is out to rip-off the consumer.
