Ive spend the better part of my adult years living rural, and have never known anything faster than dial up. I desided, esp. after all those Hughes Net TV commercials about AHHH, THE SOUNDS OF NATURE (and then insert sound of a modem dialing up) that it was time for me to come out of the dark ages.

Well the as brief as I can make this nightmare which is called Hughes Net...I make the call, they say they are going to take $180 from my acct. once it's installed and bill me monthly (around $70) and I put a debit card on file, they say an installer will be contacting me...so I get an email from some obscure folks saying to call Hughes Net to find about about arranging an installer. Go figure...and that was the least of my problems.

Yesterday the installer arrives in his little unmarked mini van and with his KID! They immediatley walk in my house and start poking at my dogs in cages wirh newborn puppies. GRRRRR IM NOT HAPPY. I show them an exsiting hole in the wall where they can run the cables. He doesnt want to that, he wants to put it in my bedroom, I say NO-I want NOTHING Comuter related in my bedrooms, THE END. So he walks outside and says he doesnt want to put the dish on the roof or string wires (I have other dishes on my roof, single story, shingle roof)
he wants to put in a pole for an extra $125.00. I say I want it on the roof. He says pole. I say I already have another pole that is quite sturdy and in the same line of sight-he says no but his kid will dig it out of the ground for 30 bucks. Then he wants to put the pole in the middle of an area that the horses walk and I drive-I say NO. So he gts closer to the house...I say maybe, but my septic is there. He claims he knows right where my septic is, (even I dont know that without pulling out the survey) He plants the pole and demands cash money-I say youll get your money when the work is COMPLETE. He then INSISTS it must go in the bedroom so he doesnt have to run wires, he doesnt like the wireless router I am purchasing...so I send my ex (who is a good friend n my puter guru) to the store allowing this fellow to didtact the items THAT HE NEEDS to make the install easy on him. Im giving him the benefit of the doubt. We get all the items he requests.

I leave my ex and installer and run out THANKFULLY to an appt. I was gone about 2 hours, expecting to return to AHHH, THE SOUNDS OF NATURE and no modem sounds.
What I return to is the installer long gone, trash in the yard, a pole in my septic tank 155.00 poorer (paid in cash without a receipt) and NO INTERNET CONNECTION! And this is only the beginning. Within 45 min of being installed-IT STOPPED WORKING!!!!

My ex began calling their Tech support (IN INDIA) starting at 8pm.....IT WENT ON TILL 430AM!!!!!!!!!! (God bless the ex) Mostly he was unplugging a replugging the modem and typing in numbers they would give him-killed 2!!!laptop batteries! I called customer service 3 times (IN INDIA), and they hung up on me 3 times. I told them I didnt want to be billed till it was up and running. They said it would cost me ANOTHER $100 to cancel the service plus the $180. So...I called my bank and had to get rid of my card to insure that these fools would NOT BILL ME. I asked and Paul asked where exactly this mystical Hughes Net was located and for a local state side number-they said they (hold on to your hats) DIDNT KNOW. I said well where/what state are they located in (THEY DIDNT KNOW) We logged 33 calls to their tech support/advanced tech support and cust. service, to NO AVAIL. ABout 7 of those where dropped calls on our end-the rest were either dropped by them or we were just told to unplug, wait and call them back for more numbers. We kept suggesting they send a tech support person back out. Nope

9 am today, fresh start, semi rested....weve called EVERYONE, have to tell them the whole story over and OVER AGAIN (besides already having 33 "case numbers") We tag team them, him on one phone me on the other-just wanting a tech support person back out here to fix this mess. We are calling hughes net, the installer and the PERFECT 10 who is suppossedly suppose to oversee the installer. We spend most of the afternoon making no less than 20 calls. We GET NO WHERE and no tech support in person or otherwise and Im convinced Ive lost a year off my life from both good cop and bad cop-ing them. My ex-In his 60's and poor health, forgot his HBP meds.

Its now 6:32pm EST. Not even 24 hours since installed. And my poor ex, the trooper that he is, is still in the other room-listening again to their INDIAN tech support people who are trying to fix it "remotely". I told him in no uncertain terms will I be keeping or paying for this service, but he still has that man, try till you die thing going on. On my very last ph call to them I noted to them that hughes Net seems to have a lot of bad blogs and bad press on the net. The response from an employee named Scott was, "we know and we dont care." (I kid you not thats word for word what he said) I think that pretty much sums up the founding values of this company.

Me personally, Im done, Im sitting here on the laptop I call clunky with my happy little dependable, albeit slow, dial up connection. We never got a real number or location for Hughes net before finding this site. The only word of advice I can give folks after this expereince is AHHHH, WHEN YOU LIVE RURAL THE SOUNDS OF PEACE OF MIND OFTEN SOUNDS LIKE A DIAL UP MODEM.

You and I both might want to try another sat. company someday, but HUGHES NET is NOT THE ONE to give your business too! They dont really seem to exsist, they just get you bank acct info and will nickle and dime you for every sneeze-even tho their system, in our case, failed to work. (and I do have a clear view of the so. sky and there were NO CLOUDS)

I know this may sound different especially coming from a person who offers Satellite Service, but I do not recommend Satellite Internet unless you have to have it.  The speed is not much different than dial up the main difference is the bandwidth, not really an option with dial-up.

However either, most companies do not come out and install the service with out it working.  I suggest you contacting Hughes Net, and would consider keeping dial-up until you get DSL or cable service out there.  I know that is not answer you want to hear but it is a solution.
