HughesNet will provide slightly faster than Dial-up internet to your rural location. They will also tell you that they have a "Fair" access policy in place to to protect your bandwidth. This policy is will disable your internet completely if you surpass you allotted download limit. IE watch 1 movie on Netflix, download 1 album from iTunes, or watch to many YouTube videos.

Internet gaming is impossible using HughesNet satellite internet service. Xbox live will not connect using this service. If you are a World of Warcraft addict looking to break the habit this is the service for you.

There prices start at $59.99 a month for slower than DSL Speeds and only 200mb download limit. If you hit your download limit they will Sell you a "Restore Token" to turn your overpriced internet back on. The closest Cable internet service to my location is Time Warner Cable this service allows for nonstop usage at nearly the same monthly rate and 7 times the download speed.

To: The first Real ISP to come to my area... I willing to sign a 5 year contract at $69.99 a month for uninterrupted internet service with unlimited download amounts and at least 5Mbps.

"Unfortunately Microsoft seems to want to choose when you update, rather than letting you control the setup and times."

You can fix that.  Windows Update can operate in 3 modes.  1) Automatically download and install updates.  2)Automatically download updates and prompt you to install.  3) Turn off auto updates.

If you set Windows Update to not use any auto updates, it will not download any updates.  The downside is that you will periodically have to go to the Windows Update site and manually download them.

Hughes Net

AUTHOR: Rhys - (United States of America)

Hughes Net is more than "slightly" faster than dial-up. I had dial up for years, and as the web got more and more image and flash oriented it became extremely difficult to do anything. It is true Hughes Net is not suited for gaming or watching movies, but if it is all that is available where you live it is much better than dial-up.

We have no alternative where we live, nor are likely to in my lifetime. There is no cable, and we are too far from the exchange for DSL. The phone lines are badly deteriorated, so even dial up doesn't run at capacity. No one is improving the infrastructure - it is being allowed to decay.
Hughes net tells you about the allowance, though they probably could make it clearer what it means for the user. They do allow unlimited downloads between 1 and 7 AM, which allows you to update your computers and download large files. Unfortunately Microsoft seems to want to choose when you update, rather than letting you control the setup and times.

#3 Consumer Suggestion

You are completely right about this company

AUTHOR: Ken - (USA)

I have read numerous reports on this company and they should be the very LAST CHOICE for service.

If you have ANY alternative, stay away from them.

FAP (Fair Access Policy) is just their way of seriously over-subscribing the service.
