A friend of mine Jeremy Wright asked if I wanted a job selling Comcast door to door for a company named Human Channel Marketing formerly Stampede located on aurora close to the downtown Seattle area.

When I went in to Human Channel Marketing I met Lauren Pine the office administrator however my first impression of the office was that the place was nearly empty. they had maybe 15 folding chairs, a white board, two desks, one shelf and two lunch tables.  They could disappear and move the entire office in 20 minutes easily which was my first indication this job was a scam.

Training is practically nonexistent and the hiring process is a joke.  The company is comprised of about 4 sales people who earn their paychecks utilizing a pyramid scheme that depends on new hires to achieve sales for the company.  Those who accept this job with the idea they will make money are mistaking.

I had no interview, no training, and they even tell you to go buy synthetic urine sold at smoke shops in order to pass your drug test as comcast requires Human Channel to make sure thier employees dont use drugs.

I quit this job after 4 days with the understanding I was to be paid $250 for the time I worked and made 11 sales but when it came time to pick up my check I was told that I wouldn't be paid at all and that I should have read my contract more carefully.

Further I later learned that each customer I sold the service too was getting ripped off.  I was told to promise them free install yet the customers were still charged over $100 each for installation.  The worst part is that not a single customer is really saving a dime even though that's the pitch were convinced to use and the pretences I was hired under.

In effect all we were doing was getting the jump on the verizion FIOS cabling that was taking place.  We would get the customer to bundle thier services with us and show them how they were going to save money by leaving verizion phone and internet service and going with comcast but what the customers didnt know is that we were locking them in and would later raise the price while in fact verizion really has the cheapest bundle prices and thier service would be in thier neighborhood soon.

Human channel marketing is bogus.  We would wear comcast badges and t-shirts and introduce ourself as comacst reps when in fact we were third party door to door sales men working as third party contractors.

We were allowed to go into peoples houses and even go so far as mislead the customers by acting as if we were the local service reps for the area promising customers personal service in the future that they would never again recieve after the sale was complete.

The entire interaction with the customers from begining to end was based on a bold face lie.

Here is the pitch .

Hi, im your neighborhood comcast rep and were in the neighborhood today checking with our customer to make sure they have not experienced any un-resolved issues with thier services as we have been performing upgrades in the neighborhood recently.

The customer would typically say there was no issues with thier service however If there was an existing problem we would use this as a way to go into thier houses under the pretence that we were comcast techs who could help them even though thiere was nothing we could do to help.  We didnt even the ability to contact anyone at comcast corporate who could resolve thier issue..

Once we were in thier houses we would confirm the services the customers had with comcast and ask them how much they were paying.  Soon as the customer discloses the cost of the bills with comcast we would tell them it seemed a bit high to pay and ask if they would like us to help them save money on thier existing services.

Once the customer agreed we would simply upgrade thier cable service to a more expensive package and add our phone service and internet wich would look like it was costing the customer less but in fact was locking the customer into the upgraded packages and preventing the customer from recieveing future promotional prices.

How this works is the comcast cancellation fee, although there is no contract the customer wont have the option to save money when a competing company offers them a better deal because the cancellation fee will outweight the benifit of switching.  Simply put the people at comcast and Human Channel marketing know Verizion is installing fiber optic cable around washington and will be offering incrediable deals for all three services soon.

The scam starts by taking customers who dont have internet or phone with comcast and getting them to switch service to comcast by making them believe they will save money with comcast, in the long ruin.  In fact they might be when comparing the combination of our cable service with the other companies internet and phone bill especially when being billed seprately.

However, the catch is that once the customer is signed up it will only be a matter of time before the competing company makes offers in the neighborhood that we as comcast reps know are lower prices then our existing promotional prices, much lower.

When the customer calls comcast to say that they would like to cancell they will let the customer know if they cancell there is a cancellation fee wich is typically more then the customer would save by switching services and this is how comcast  effectively locks the customer into the comcast service.

What the customer didnt know when they signed up was not only that there would be a cancellation fee but that the price they are paying know is only a promotional price that will go up in six months to a year so the customer loses no matter what and comcast eliminates free market competition with the help of the unscrupulous sales staff at human channel marketing who know all this but are still willing to sell the service and train thier employees to think thier job is to save people money.

In the end if scamming people isnt for you then your not going to get paid taking this job. They will be sure you dont have a clear understanding of this when your hired so that you will give it a shot and use your still trustworthy face to make them a few deals that they wil profit from.  These people at human channel sell nothing more then a dream to thier employees and snake oil to thier customers.

Human channel marketing is comprised of the worst type of bottom feeders selling false motivation and a false product.  Just as thier office appears the company company will soon disappear when the scam is up

I dont reccomend this job to my worst enemey.  In all if you meet quota the most you would make at this job $80 a day and you will work your ass off and sell your integrity to get every penny you make if you make anything at all.  Macdonalds would be a less demeaning job and considering expenses would pay much better.  The only way to make more money with Human Channel Marketing formely known as stampede is to sell the dream to the new hires.

The company makes its money from what I call the new hire scam.  Sales contractors are offered oppourtunity to sell services for big companies like comcast.  In this case Human Channel Marketing formely Stampede recieved the comcast contract. Comcast doesnt pay much wich doesnt make the job very attractive.

So Human Channel comes in and says we can sell the product using a pyramid scheme and they set out to hire contractors.  Since the job doesnt pay very well and requires a total lack of ethics to sell the service in the manner it needs to be sold the hiring company in this case Huiman Channel Marketing adds a badging fee of $250 - $350 dollars and makes a requirement of the sales person to have 100 sales or this amount will be removed from the sales persons check.

Meanwhile your hiring manager says not to worry about that clause in the contract  that it has already been payed for and that the clause is never activated (everyone gets payed).  Soon as your hired your told how much money you can make once you get your own staff under you. Meanwhile your new manager is making a percentage of your earnings.

What the supervisors dont want you to know is that 99% of those including you who took the job Quit the job shortly after as they discover that there is no future working for Human Channel Marketing.  It becomes apperent to anyone with brain that the entire sales process is based new hires and or on misleading the customer which in this case is really you.

Ultimatly the product that is being sold to you as a good job under the false pretence that the customer is going to save money long term when its simply not true making you motivated to accept the position.

When you discover its all a lie and quit the job thinking you will get paid for the sales you made and that the job is just not for you it wont be long before they tell you that you should have read the contract more carefully.  Meanwhile everyone else but you still gets payed.

To add insult to injury the quota is impossible to achieve even for thise who do decide and stay with the company.  Those indivduals will eventually be terminated.  Becuase the company only has so many leads to work in the first place there really never weas any oppoutunity for growth in the company or to have ones own staff as they wanted you to believe.

The truth is that only those who came in on the ground floor ever make any money at all.  Those who do make 100 sales and quit get $350 flat out stolen from them for an ID card and a piss test that costs them $35.  You just worked for $7.50 an hour if that was you.

The head of this fly by night sales scam is Lee Roy Whaley Jr and partners Lauren Pine and Jeremy Wright.  If you ever see someone with a concast badge knock on your door avoid them like the plauge as they are probably Human Channel Marketing sales staff.  To those who purchased the service from me, im sorry I didnt know.  They never payed me anyways so I stood to gain nothing.  I just wanted a job.

Attached is a scan copy of the BS motivational sales letters they would like you buy into with pictures of the scammers in question.  I am owed about $250 and I would like to be paid.

Not exactly...

AUTHOR: abbottronic - ()

I had worked for this company relatively recently, and I understand very well how it works.  I didnt do well, not well at all, but everyone pushed for me to succeed till I was let go anyways.  I wasnt decieved in any way, I was simply told it was to be 100% commission based, and a lot of hard work would be invloved to get to the earning potential I was after.  I didnt want to leave when I did, but it was for the better.  Anyways all the people involved including everyone ms.richey pointed out are super awesome people to work with including herself.  I dont think talking down any real business is a justified action in result of you sucking at the job.  If youre not cut out for a sales position, you will fail.  All I can say is that it was meant for me to be there as long as I was, and the job I have now blows anything ive ever done out of the water and I would absolutely love to see them again.  I wouls never have even thought to do what I am now if it wasnt for them stickin my rear end out in the middle of portland knocking on doors all damn day long every damn day.  Dmi team freezer no matter what and I still remember everything mr foster ran me through.  Im better because of it and my family and I benefits from it.  Its a lifestyle more than a job.  You either do it or you dont.  Just leave n shut up and take responsibilty for your own inability to do anything positive for yourself, not one damn person from team freeze wouls steer anyone the wrong direction.   Not happening.  The end.    -Justin Abbott, team freeze.

Wow

AUTHOR: T-Locs - (United States of America)

Wow this is the most ridiculous claim I have yet to see on this.
I use to work for this company in Vancouver Wa under Jeremy Foster,
Not only did I help people save a ton on money I made a good profit off of it.
That may be because I applied myself though and when I didnt make
Good money it was my own fault. This is a great company with a ton of super awesome
Individules. I also walked away from this job with the best mind set of my entire life.
I will never forget any of these wonderful people like Jeremy Foster "J-Frost",
Kelsie Turner "Kaddilak K", Lance Leuzinger "Beastmode",
Austin Calderon "My Ninja". I have never worked with such a group
Of inspiring people who had my back no matter what. This was the best place
Ive ever worked in my entire life I was sad to go.
This job was filled with inspired people with great attitudes and love what they do.
Ive never been around so many positive people in my entire life.
I myself was never a very positive person until I came around this group of people.
I am just disgusted that anyone is talking trash on this company because this company
Is filled with some of the best people I have ever known and they gave me the opportunity
To make a lot of money when I had nothing. Dont believe this internet blog spot bullshit
This is a great job with a lot of great potiential not only to make money but to grow as an
Individual as well.

MR. 4 days. haha

AUTHOR: Kent Christensen - (United States of America)

Ill make this short and sweet to the unmotivated bums on these complaints. HCM is a company just trying to set up a platform for people who want a JOB. The harder you work for Sam and HCM...the more he will pay you. You just have to be willing to put in the work. Whoever you are...you gave them 4 days. Your the joke, not HCM. Your just feeling entitled like someone owes you something. I put in 3 months of hard work, and i could see the payoff coming. Unfortunately i had to go to Boston for 2 months shortly after i started, but they are willing to give me the chance to come back and start where i left off. Good luck finding that somewhere else "mister i quit after 4 days"lol. You do have one thing right though...Sam and HCM arent, and shouldnt pay you for your 4 days on uncommited work.

**Beware Deluxe Marketing Inc. (DMI) in Portland, OR**

AUTHOR: matt diggs - (United States of America)

Thank god for this report!

I was recently recruited by a man selling Comcast who offered me a job at my front door. Let me start by saying this; all rings exactly true for me except the company is based out of Las Vegas and is called Deluxe Marketing Inc. The man who recruited me is named Tony Black and the person managing was named Mike. They claimed to be from Tacoma and are now based in Portland, OR. The office was exactly as described- bare, with the exception of some UFC posters on the wall (because they sell cable, I guess?) I went to an "orientation" that was followed up by an interview although I had never filled out an app. and it doesn't look like they were going to ask. The whole thing reeked of a scam as the fellow introduced himself as a drunk at a gas station who had been recruited by this mysterious comcast guy who "changed his life" and then started selling the whole "and you can be a success too!" I really didn't envy him;)

They promised x-box's as competitive rewards and up to a grand a week in sales. During the interview, I asked Mike what the base pay rate was and he looked at me like I was crazy. There was never a discussion of hours, availability, benefits. They basically just said "do you want to work here?" and "come back tomorrow for a second interview."

But I get it, they aren't hiring me.. just training me as an independent proprietor. Kind of reminds me of the sort of independent proprietor who is "trained" by a certain kindly fellow who goes by "mac daddy."

Thanks for the heads up ROR!

*****Call me if you have any doubts that this company is a ripoff*******

AUTHOR: MC - (United States of America)

My name is Robert Carter, and I worked for this company for more than 8 months. Not only can I prove beyond any reasonable doubt that this company is a ripoff, but I can provide 13 phone numbers of other ex-employees that will say the same. Don't listen to these above rebuttals because they are from employees that Tim Padden (the owner) made them write. One ex employee that is owed money was told that he would get his last check only after he wrote a rebuttal. If you want solid proof, call me anytime.

I am interested in knowing whether the owner of HCM did follow through and send a check as promised.

My son(s) had experiences as well with Stampede Marketing, which were more in line with your original complaints.  I spoke with my son who spent two summers selling Comcast Cable, just this evening, asking him to write his own report of his experiences.

I hope that he does.

I know that the owner that he is still dealing with is Peter Knecht, from the Provo, Utah office, but lives in Alpine, Utah.  Is that the same person who contacted you?

It is now January 2010.  Has he made good since your last post, in September 2009?

Spoke with the owner.

AUTHOR: Allen - (USA)

Despite everyone in the Seattle office attempting to discount my experience which is to be expected,  the owner of human channel marketing contacted me by phone.  Despite individuals at the Seattle office claiming that nobody would care if i voiced my concerns online It came as a pleasant surprise to learn that the owner of HCM was very concerned and willing to spend the time asking questions and listening to what I had to say.

The owner of HCM explained to me his business model and it was at that point it became clear to the Owner of HCM and myself that some serious miscommunication and misunderstandings had taken place.  Its my belief now that the problems I experienced stemmed from a few rouge elements in the Seattle office rather then the business model the owner of HCM has attempted to establish.

I explained to the owner that my main concern is not the money Per Se but that others looking for a job are able to obtain employment / proprietorship with HCM without wasting time that could mean the difference between being able to eat or paying rent as was the case with me during my episode with HCM.

At this point I attribute my issues to the fact that the individuals who solicited my expertise in sales failed to make certain points clear to me upon my signing on with HCM and I kinda wish I had been in contact with the owner sooner.

In this case the sad part is that everyone is losing an opportunity here.  I am a top producer in sales and unfortunately HCM and I have passed each other up due to a simple miss understanding.  Everyone loses in this deal.

It seems to me from speaking to the owner that a person would be able to find lucrative employment at any HCM office provided the office is being run the way the owner of HCM expects each office to be handled.  Those of you in the Seattle office are the ones who have some work to do in order to get in line with the owners goals.

When the owner called me I was concerned he was trying to sell me on removing this post by paying me however he passed the test.  He was sincere with me about his business model,  he didn't discount my experience and he made sure each aspect of my issues and concerns would be solved directly.

He assured me that not only would I be payed in full due to the miss-communications but more importantly that he would be touching down in Seattle in order to roll some heads and re-train and arrange the office so that it will meet his standards of operation.  The owner seemed committed and to me that is what resolves this issue in my mind.

I also discussed the Quick Fix issue in relation to the urine analysis required by HCM.  As it turns out the rouge element who made those suggestions has been dealt with.  I am very glad this is not the regular practices of HCM.

For a short time I was under the impression it might have been a common practice.  After speaking with the owner I am glad to report back that the owner was proactive in resolving that issue in addition to the other issues I experienced stemming from the Seattle office.  I can say now that the owner of HCM is committed to a drug free work environment.

I will update this post upon receipt of my paycheck and again to the owner I thank you for your willingness to speak with me and your determination to take care of me and make sure your office is being run according to the high standards you have set out to achieve.  Despite the experience I had its nice to know there are business owners who are as committed as you have shown you are and I wish you the best of luck in dealing with the Seattle Office.

#8 Consumer Suggestion

GET EDUCATED

AUTHOR: SAMMY DAVIS - (USA)

DEAR PLAINTIFF,

You said so yourself, you should have read the fine print. I can add to your list of should-have-done-homework:

1- Know the industry your stepping into, and know as much about it as possible; it is obvious after reading your complaint that you knew nothing about the cable industry before agreeing to work in it.

2- Know what your specialty will be; it is obvious that you did not know much about sales or customer service, and you definitely did not know anything about direct marketing (door to door sales). If you did work in sales before, I can say that you have a lot of learning yet to do.

3- Know the company your about to work with; did you look up anything on Stampede Marketing? Did you look up anything on Human Channel Marketing? Did you ask questions about the company, like, who owns it? Who is under that person, and who is under that person? If you had done that, you would realize that the "pyramid" scheme does not apply to Human Channel Marketing, because by definition a pyramid scheme is, "...a non-sustainable business model that involves the exchange of money primarily for enrolling other people into the scheme, often without any product or service being delivered...", which obviously does not apply in this scenario because there are both products and services being offered.

Furthermore, if you had done your homework on the company you went out to represent, you might have been more comfortable representing that company.

4- Know the competitive companies in the same market; who else was offering contracts in that area? Did you know anything about their company and how their model/benefits/pay differed from Human Channel Marketing? If you had done that you would have found a wealth of knowledge, and perhaps even made some assertions about wanting (or not) to work for Human Channel Marketing.

5- Know your business entities; you were not an employee, you were a subcontracted sole-proprietor. The differences are in the relationship between you and the contractor, and how you pay taxes. You were your own business, which makes it all the more important for you to be out there working with the public with integrity.

Which leads me to my next point--

INTEGRITY IS EVERYTHING IN BUSINESS. So the fact that you didn't know these things prior to getting started is not Human Channel Marketing's fault, alone. It is also your fault. You should have done your homework.

I can honestly say that I understand your pain, because I was formerly a subcontractor with Human Channel Marketing, and they treated me as fairly as I deserved while abiding in their agreement with me. I should have known the answers to the matters I have described as above, which would have really helped me in dealing with the anger I felt in leaving Human Channel Marketing, because it was my own fault.

What I can also say is, that there are plenty of opportunities out there, and if you look hard enough, you will find a company that defies a lot of the vastly negative generalizations that you have listed in your "rip off."

For the record, I know Chet and he is great guy. He is the kind of manager that will spend the extra time and effort helping a good cat get better at his/her job. If you would have spent more time with Chet, you may have realized that he really does take care of his customers and his personel. I have seen and heard him in action, and he is the kind of person that does as he says. I appreciate his willingness to go the extra mile for the people he works with.

As for Lauren, she is probably just sick of dealing with angry people that consistently accuse her of being the bad guy (girl... hmm hmm), when in actuality, you didn't do your homework or read the fine print. Her job is to cover the expenses, and all the materials that were used to bring you on board. She is lucky you made any sales to cover what it cost to bring you on board.

As for LeeRoy, he is an outstanding salesperson, a likeable person, and a good friend. Sure, I have my disagreements in the business model that they choose to use at Human Channel Marketing, and that is why I left to start my own business. Ultimately, I believe that they could be one of the best door to door companies out there if they were just paying a more reasonable percentage to their sales people. I believe that the sales person should be getting atleast 70% of the revenue from each sale, but HCM pays half that or less which is a painful fact to face. Ultimately, my beliefs and my standards about those things differ from HCM, and that is why I should have not agreed to work with HCM just as you should not have.

But don't go getting your personal feeling all mixed up with the business facts. Comcast is an outstanding corporation that truly goes the extra mile for all of their customers. HCM is a decent group of hard working people that do what they say, you just had different standards and expectations, and that is not their fault. So quit slandering the industry and the honest sales person that is out their pouring their soul into their sole-proprietorship, and taking good care of the customer, which you may have failed to do.

Nope, your the example.

AUTHOR: Allen - (USA)

Thats one of the supers who wrote that gaurenteed.  Most likely Chet or Lee Roy Whaley Jr who posted the responce comment since im very sure there is not even one other employee working at the Seattle office of Human Channel that could possibly articulate themself to such a point.

Lee Roy and Chet are both team leaders at the seattle office for human channel and thats the snake oil.  They just tried to sell you HA HA HA HA.  To say comcast has any form of decent customer service is a joke.  Your making it very clear that your just another person trying to sell the scam.  Go ahead and just sell it to yourself because my readers arent buying it.

Who wants a door to door sales persons phone number anyways.  You are door to door sales people ! DESPITE YOUR BELIEF you are not customer service reps as you would like to convince the public.  The test is do you knock on doors ?  and do you sell somthing ?  the end.

I think your responce makes it obvious that I have been frank in my posting.  I think the tens of thousand of people reading this knows that. Honestly it was that same great sales pitch you so eloquently detailed in your responce that sold me on taking the job in the first place.   Unfortunately it all equates to yet another variation of the hyper motivational BS sales pitches typical of all new hire pyramid scams

I have been in the sales force 15 years, I have owned and sold 3 sales based organizations and I have helped many other business owners become established through sales based marketing strategy.  I think I should be able decern a scam in 3 days.  Clearly it should not take a reasonable individual 6 months to figure out that the place he/she works is scam company profiting from the misfourtune of others.

By the way genious a new hire scam doesnt work unless the employee quits shortly after having been hired so you can screw him/her with a contract.  Considering the empty office you work from,  the lack of training and the joke sales meeting held at Human Channel my having quit within 3 days should have come as no supprise.

Further you can try and discount my experience all you want with your sales pitch or whatever but untill I am paid you have proven nothing and merely re-enforced my arguments.  In the future I would like to encourage you to keep responding as you are only creating more weight behind this post strengthening its position in the search engines.  At least your number one for somthing.

Human Channel could just pay me what im owed.

You're joking, right?

AUTHOR: chet rodell - (USA)

I was extremely offended by the original post above, from a guy that was in the office for no more than 3 days, and sold products to 3 customers or less. Ive been here for a year....and in that time nobody else has ever made a slanderous report.

Working for Human Channel Marketing over the last year I have sold door to door in the Seattle market for over 8 months of my time with the company, and 4 months in the Colorado market. In that time I have been treated more than fair.  I make more money then anywhere else I have ever worked- more than selling cars, insurance, or cutlery ever did. By the way, I left those professions because despite being successful, i didnt like selling fear or forcing the sale on people. I make $1500-$2000 every week just from personal sales, and the company has paid every dollar owed.

Being commission only sales, we have the opportunity to make as much money as we want, while helping to lower customers bills. Since comcast promotional offers do not include contracts, and are actually the lowest in the market for internet and phone - (do your own research, i look at peoples bills all day) we are able to save people money year after year and give them the freedom to change providers any time they want.  We also help make sure the customer is not being charged for equipment or services they don't want or need. All my customers are happy - i know because i give them my personal number, and Ive made a lot of friends from customers.

As salesman, we all have the opportunity to earn high pay from the day we walk in the door. I started making close to $1000 with human channel marketing every week within my first month, and everyone coming into the company has that same opportunity as when i started a year ago. Last week I went on a 10 day paid vacation to hawaii as a reward for 360 personal sales in 90 days. We went skydiving, scuba diving, and had a great time with the locals. We have trips put up as rewards as a model for how we work and have fun.

Every day I work i save people thousands of dollars a year cumulatively, selling the highest rated highest customer service product available. I love my job, more than any other job ive had in the past. Having met almost everyone involved in Human Channel Marketing I can safely say that this organization is solid and we pride ourselves on keeping around positive people that help us move forward, and getting rid of negative people.
