International Profit Associates Unbelieveable closing techniques. Makes "Hard Sell" a softer Term Buffalo Grove Illinois
As the owner of a growing business, I find myself a little alone and overwhelmed by reports, p & l's and balance sheets that seem to have little or no basis in what is actually happening on a daily basis in my world. So the day several weeks ago when I happened to grab a ringing phone, I didn't even think twice in my response to the guy on the other end. "We have a representative who will be in your area tomorrow who would like to tell you about our products". My usual response is no, but that day I said "Well, he can come, but there is no promise that I will be available." And that was it......and honestly, I forgot about it.
The next day, a nice looking guy, well dressed and heeled, comes in to our wild and crazy environment. My desk was a mess, I had managed to get dressed up for the day as I had another appt. later on, but we are pretty casual. He settled in on the futon sofa in my office to tell me about his services and I felt a little ashamed. He asked a lot of questions. I am the first to say I need some help, so when he offered a consultant for 2 days of analysis for $750.00, I hardly thought twice. There was literature spilling out of everywhere from him. A DVD, a magazine, brochures, he seemed to have a lot of credibility. I did think about the 60 Minutes segment I had seen about Insurance agents paying to have their photo stuck on the front page of a mag. and then an dummy article inside. I knew this was possible years ago when I was in Real Estate, so I decided that it was a $750.00 risk/investment.
We set up a time for 2 weeks later for the analyst to come and filled out all sorts of paperwork. I got phone calls verifying bonds and a fax re: bonds and he left. A short time later the phone rang. It was IPA, "could I help them out, they had an analyst stranded by American Airlines and could I take him the next day?" A firm "no". Then another call a day or two later. I said no to that too.
On the appointed day for the analyst to come, I had just returned from a rocking business trip and could hardly move, much less talk business intently, but I knew there was no turning back. She was dressed crisply. Drove a nice car. Not a rental. Said she was from Detroit. Said she had arrived just for this appt. I truly didn't believe it. We talked for about an hour, she wanted all my financials, which I had a hell of a time pulling off quickbooks. My bookkeeper was out, so I was on my own with that. I swear I felt like a kid with the teacher behind me rapping on the desk with a ruler.
Finally, I felt like she had all she needed and I gave her a desk to sit at in our production area. I already felt a little of the game beginning. The low growl of machines and voices raised above them I felt sure, was annoying to her. I went back to my office to accomplish something. When I turned, she was at the door staring at me. I think she sat at her desk for a total of 30 minutes. She went outside, talked on her cell, "called the home office", called in numbers, faxed the p & l. I never saw a lap top. Never saw a calculator. She must have had one in her car, because the second day, she started producing color re-done versions of my balance sheet and P & l. She talked privately with my staff. I didn't recall this being a part of the deal, but I believe in my people, so I let her go. She didn't eat lunch. Didn't have a drink. I wasn't really impressed. I wasn't going to take her out, wasn't going to bring food in for her.
The second day, she sat in my office and stared at me. She would read me a pre-printed form (I have always had a hard time with that.......I fall asleep) and I would lose interest. The few things she gave me that pertained to numbers were helpful, but I could have digested those in 10 minutes. She asked if I were committed. I replied that I wouldn't be sitting in the chair I was in if I weren't committed. She said she "didn't believe me". That "I needed to convince her".
And then she stared. PLEASE DON'T TRY TO CLOSE A CLOSER. I asked what kind of response did she want? "Tears?" I think a lot of women would have cried. There was pressure, except I wasn't having any of it. What I was having was a hard time getting her to the bottom line. I couldn't get her to tell me what she wanted so she would leave. When it finally came out, after the laundry list of all the things I have ever done wrong in the business, it was $71,000.00!!! I said that that wouldn't work. I was polite. And firm. I wanted to see exactly what I was dealing with, so I asked if I could think about it overnight. She said that she'd "be on to another job" in the am. I found it amazing that it was to be over just like that. "What if I call you in June?" "No, the numbers will be all different and we will have to begin again." Oh, please!!
So the bottom line: they just want you to sign immediately so you don't figure out that they are crooks. I did get several great things out of the p&l redo and and I took the laundry list to heart and made some simple and effective changes right away. With the exception of the p&l, I knew all this in my heart, I just needed a little incentive to get the ball rolling. She did create a little underminding with the staff, which took a few days to fix.
Her parting words: "What are you going to do now?" Like I had been left alone in a snow drift in the middle of FL. My reply, "go down this list and fix all these things." She said, "you are procrastinating." Please! Half the things are already done and she left on Tuesday. This is Friday.
SO don't do it! Resist the power of IPA.
