My story begins as many others that have gone through this. In my case I had an invention that I was activly using in my landscaping business. I was asked to install black loandscape edging around a tree that had roots above the ground. Of coarse you cannot dig through the roots to install the edging without hurting the tree, I had to come up with something.
AFter a few alterations to the existing black edging I was able to install it above the ground with the same final outcome and look of a normal installation. Not only did this solve the problem, but it would also save a lot of work on many other edging jobs for years to come. It saved me time and money and the customers loved it. I knew that I had something here!
I had seen the Invent Tech commercials on television, so I called and ordered a packet that contained all kinds of "wonderful" information. Shortly after, I was contacted by a man named Harry King. You would have thought that he had known me for years as he came across as my best friend. My being young and a bit skeptical (of invention companies) quickly went away with Harry's assurance of a wonderful wealthy future. He had me send the $ 950.00 for the searching and to get things rolling. At this time I did not know that I would need to send anything other monies!
He called me a week later with "GOOD NEWS!!" He said that they did the searches and there are no other companies with products like mine in existence, nor are there any patents even similar to my idea. He said, "Dave, this is something that we really need to move on quickly, you have a huge idea here!" He had me so excited that I could barely keep my composure. Okay Dave, he said. Now I need you to send me the money to get this things rolling. He kept reeling me in further and further.
As I was in shock, I spoke to my parents and since we knew how great my invention was, we decided to go ahead and send the additional $ 7,500.00. My parents took out a loan for me. Note, my parents were and are not at all wealthy, so this was very difficult for them to do financially, but they felt so strongly about my invention that they would have done anything possible to help me towards my dream.
Still excited, Harry had me take photos of myself and my invention, along with details and drawings. I can recall sending a photo of me holding the Invent Tech baseball hat and he told me that the media attention would market the photo as saying "hats off to the new style of black edging!" In reality he probably never even looked at the photo. I recieved a huge package in leather folders with all kinds of signatures needed and all my info for the invention as well as all the profesional legal documents to cover any one trying to steal the idea. This was soon followed up with my certificate of patent.
For over a year I recieved postcards from trade shows that they were doing all over the world with my product. Oddly enough I never saw "my product!!" It was always various photos of the events which included many industry companies such as RCA, etc. Nothing ever showed that Invent Tech, let alone my invention was even in the shows. This was followed up with my recieving (on a monthly basis) ten envelopes, 10 letter about my invention and 10 address labels to possible buyers of the product. This is when the red flags came up in my mind.
They did not even include postage. I had to pay for that to mail these things out. So, I went with it and mailed about 30 of the "Press Release" envelopes out to the addresses that they had provided. As the addresses were not accompanied with telephone numbers, I got on the internet to look up and call a couple of these companies to do follow ups. My first two were disconnected.
By this time, someone else (not my buddy Harry King) called me to advise that they had recieved teh remainder of my money owed and that it would be going to the product development department. Harry King, who had been calling me almost on a daily basis was now nowhere to be found.
As six months went by and nothing had progressed I was almost sick over this entire thing. All of the promises of wealth and Invent Tech flying me down to Corals Gables for a visit had all faded away. To make matters worse I walked into a Home Depot to purchase (you guessed it) black edging and there was my invention, right there on the shelf!! Something wasn't right! #1. Harry assured me that nothing else like this existed! and #2 I own the patent! How could this be? It seemed very black and white. It seemed as if either Invent Tech owed me a refund if indeed someone already had a patent or that we had a case to go after someone for stealing my patent.
I got the contact info off of the box and attempted to make contact several times with this manufactured with no luck. I even posed as a potential client and didnt get a return call. So, in hopes that Harry and Invent Tech would back me up, I tried for two weeks to get ahold of him.
Whenever you call Invent Tech and ask for someone, the receptionist always asked for you invention ID number. Whenever I would give her the number and ask for Harry, they would always patch me to product development. One lady refused to let me speak with Harry. Finally one day I called and said that I was Harry Kings brother and needed to speak with him. Wow, they actually put him on the phone. Although he spoke with me, he acted upset and anxious to get off the phone. After I explained what I saw at Home Depot, Harry said, "well Dave, there is Coke and there is Pepsi, both very similar, but bery different!" And then the phone went dead!!! This is something out of a movie!
It has been years and that was the last time that I have spoken with him or anyone else from Invent Tech. They are salesman and they will tell you whatever you need to hear to send the money. Once they have the money they could care less about you. The supposive marketing that they do for their clients is false and it is a lie!!
Once again, we need to team up and get our money back!! I have read so many stories of individuals being ripped off by Invent Tech and other companies such as IT. We need action and we cannot do it alone. Anyone with the same story can contact me at dave(((REDACTED FOR SECURITY PURPOSES))). Lets get our money back!!
I hope that Harry King reads this and if he has a conscious, I hope that he feels some guilt for the financial problems that he and Invent Tech have caused to some many innocent victims that had a dream that was destroyed by your fraud!!
